Can you believe we are already in the month of February 2011?

Generally, when people think of the month of February, they think of Valentine‘s or love. We as people, often over look one very important thing about February. Not only is it the second month of the year, it also happens to be American Heart Month. Since 1963, Congress has required that the president proclaim February as American Heart Month, urging Americans to join the battle against heart disease.

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in

the United States.

With that being said, it is important to take every precaution necessary to insure a long and healthy life. Regardless of age, sex, race, or culture, heart disease can happen to you. It is better to be pro-active

than re-active. Do some research and know what the symptoms are. Don’t wait til it’s too late.

You can prevent and control heart disease with

just a few lifestyle changes. Making lifestyle changes can be hard. Doing it as a family may prove to be easier. Since many lifestyle habits begin during childhood, it’s never too early to start. Safe and SOUND Magazine wants to remind you that there is nothing more precious than life itself. Listen to your heart and take the necessary preventions to live a long and healthy life. As Always, God Bless and Be Safe,

February is American Heart Month and Therapeutic Wellness wants to help you create a heart healthy lifestyle through exercise and fitness. Heart Disease or “Cardiovascular Disease” includes such diseases as coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, chest pain (also called “angina”), and rheumatic heart disease. Coronary heart disease is the primary concern, as it is the leading killer of Americans. Exercise and fitness are lifestyle habits that you can change, that will decrease your personal risk of getting the disease.

Exercise Regularly: You don‘t have to be an athlete to lower your risk for heart disease. People gain some health benefits from as little as 60 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. For major health benefits, adults should do at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. Another option is to do a combination of both. A general rule is that 2 minutes of moderate-intensity activity counts the same as 1 minute of vigorous-intensity activity. Exercise not only helps your heart healthy by increasing blood flow, but it also improves your mood while releasing endorphins in the brain, and strengthens and stretches your muscles to improve posture. The more active you are, the more you will benefit.

Find what works for you: There are all kinds of heart healthy activities out there. It needs to be fun and convenient. Contact me today for a complimentary assessment. Therapeutic Wellness can design an exercise program that you can do at home, in a gym, at the park, or recommend an aerobic class that fits your needs. Whatever you do – just start moving!

In The KnowChief Criminal Deputy, Jason Ard has announced his candidacy for Sheriff.

Recently, Livingston Parish Sheriff Willie Graves announced that he will not seek a fifth term this fall. Who better to step

up in rank and fulfill the duties for Sheriff of Livingston Parish, than Jason Ard, Chief Criminal Deputy and Sheriff Willie Graves’ right hand man. Chief Deputy Ard, has dedicated his life to protecting and serving the community. It all started at an early age. When he was only 15 years old, he became a Cadet with the Denham Springs Police Department. Straight out of high school, he joined the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO) where he worked at the parish prison as a Corrections Officer. After two and a half short years, he was promoted to Road Deputy. Being one of the youngest Patrol Deputies on the road at that time, he considered it to be a great honor and achievement. From that moment on, he knew that with great achievements came great responsibility. Being a Patrol Deputy gave him an appreciation and a better understanding of Law Enforcement. With hard work and dedication to the Sheriff’s Office, at the age of twenty five,

NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN

Chief Deputy Ard was promoted to Patrol Division Supervisor. It was in that position that he helped with the creation of the Livingston Parish Special Response Team (SRT). The SRT is very important to the safety of the citizens of Livingston Parish as well as the deputies. It has proven to be very successful and has received numerous awards for the team’s service to the community in very intense situations. A few short years later, Chief Deputy Ard was again promoted, to Detective, where he worked in Investigations. After serving the parish as Detective for several years, he was then asked to take a position at the LPSO Training Center. It was there that he became an instructor and assumed the responsibility to teach and train fellow deputies. Little did he know at the time, that this position, just as the other positions he had held, would mold him into the respectable leader he is today. It was there he learned to overcome one of his greatest fears; speaking in public. He also served as a P.O.S.T

A re you suffering from TMD? TMD, also known as temporomandibular joint disorder, is a term

used to describe a list of symptoms associated with TMJ. This disorder can result in significant pain and impairment to the body. The temporomandibular joint is susceptible to many of the conditions that affect other joints in the body, including ankylosis, arthritis, trauma, dislocations, developmental anomalies, and neoplasia. Most people that suffer from TMD, are not even aware that they have it.

He is a member of; The American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Louisiana Dental Association, Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association, World Clinical Laser Institute, Las Vegas Institute of Advance Studies (LVI), Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS).ALD, Association of Laser Dentistry, ICOI, International Congress of Oral Implantologists

SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE:• Biting or chewing difficulty or

discomfort • Clicking, popping, or grating

sound when opening or closing the mouth

• Dull, aching pain in the face • Earache or Headache/Migraine

(particularly in the morning)

• Hearing loss • Jaw pain or tenderness

of the jaw • Reduced ability to open

or close the mouth • Tinnitus • Neck and shoulder pain

If you are diagnosed with TMJ, Neuromuscular Therapy is one of the most effective ways to treat the pain and help with diagnosis. The Neuromuscular device is a computerized system that Dr. Nguyen uses to evaluate the placement of your jaw bones, and gently relax the muscles to put the bones back into place. This procedure comfortably and effectively relaxes the facial and jaw muscles using a very small amount of electrical stimulation. Feeling like a series of rhythmic taps, Neuromuscular Therapy is relaxing enough that patients can read or nap while receiving it. It is like an electronic massage of the facial muscles. When the jaw muscles are relaxed, the lower jaw rests in its correct and natural position thus eliminating most, if not all, of your pain.

Crime doesn’t pay, but Crime Stoppers does,

and they want YOU to be the recipient of rewards.

S ince the Crime Stoppers program began they have paid out over $1,550,000.00 in cash rewards to citizens who assist in

the apprehension and indictment of wanted criminals.

Who is Crime Stoppers?: Crime Stoppers: For the people, by the people. Crime Stoppers is a one of a kind, privately owned, non-profit organization

that offers concerned citizens the opportunity to anonymously report information that could help to solve a felony crime. The Crime Stoppers

organization members are concerned citizens, just like you, who donate their time and service to prevent and solve crime. For over

29 years Crime Stoppers has served the people of the Greater Baton Rouge Area by creating a dynamic partnership between

the public, law enforcement, and the media.

How Crime Stoppers Works: Crime Stoppers knows that there is always

someone who has information that can help solve a crime. Perhaps, someone has seen or heard

something relevant to a crime that has been committed. The story of the crime may have been seen on the news. Someone could have recognized a face or even a voice that was caught on tape. Crime Stoppers wants you to get involved without getting involved. People

such as you, make Crime Stoppers successful. In any investigation, police and other law enforcement agencies encounter individuals who will not directly

provide information pertaining to a crime. There are many reasons why people choose not to get involved.

The most popular reasons are: Reluctance, an attitude of apathy, or fear of reprisal.

If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won‘t see you but everybody else will.

WANTS YOU…

Crime Stoppers Wants You...

People often don’t want to get involved in something they believe they will be held accountable for. Often, people feel if they turn to law enforcement with information about a crime, they will more than likely be called to testify as a witness to the crime or event. If they have to testify against a criminal, they fear the criminal may retaliate on them. They also worry that they will be considered a “tattle-tale” or perhaps a “snitch.” Some people witness crime and instead of reporting it, simply rely on others to do so. For example: If more than one person saw the same crime being committed, he or she may choose not to get involved because they think the others will report it. Some even look the other way and pretend as if they didn’t see anything at all. Crime Stoppers was formed to be a liaison between the citizens of the community and law enforcement. Crime Stoppers has been able to capture criminals, while keeping citizens who give valuable information pertaining to crime, anonymous.

the size and layout of your home and the characteristics of your family, you may need to do more to assure their safety. For example; this may include the use of emergency escape ladders in homes with two or more levels of living. More than one or two smoke alarms in the home depending on size and layout. Each home is different and it will be your job to best prepare your loved ones in case of fire.

FIREWATCHFIREWATCHWith Howard Ward -BAKER FIRE DEPARTMENT

1. Prepare a floor plan of your home showing at least two ways out of each room. An emergency escape ladder provides a safe means of getting out of your room if your home is a multi-level residence and all other exits are unavailable

2. Sleep with your bedroom door closed. It helps to hold back heat and smoke.

3. Agree on a fixed location out-of-doors where family members are to gather for a head count.

4. Make certain that no one goes back inside. 5. Practice - Practice – Practice

In the event of a fire, time is the biggest enemy and every second counts! Escape plans help you get out of your home quickly. In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for a house to fill with thick black smoke and become engulfed in flames.

EXIT DRILLS IN THE HOME (E.D.I.T.H)

Be Prepared As a young boy growing up, I was fortunate to have been involved with the Boy Scouts of America. I learned so many exciting things while I was scouting. For example: how to make a camp fire, tie knots, read a compass, and many other skills that helped me grow as a young man. Unfortunately, over the years and as time has gone by, I have lost the ability to do some of these things. One thing that I learned that has always stuck with me since the scouting days is the scout motto, “BE PREPARED.” Often we like to think we are prepared, for anything that could happen, or we think “It

will never happen to me,” but often we really aren’t truly prepared. Over the many years with the fire service, I have seen the horror and disbelief in victim’s eyes. I have heard them say “If I had only…” When it comes to preparation, it should be your first priority to prepare yourselves and your family members for the possibility of a fire in your home. Protecting your family from fire requires advance planning and preparation for what to do if fire strikes. This includes the use of protective devices, usually smoke alarms, to provide early warning of an imminent fire. The majority of all house fires happen at night while you are asleep and are most vulnerable. However, depending on

of paper Crime Stoppers, your code number, and the secret code word that has been supplied to you. Instructions are then given informing you which bank to take the piece of paper to. You will be instructed to send the piece of paper through the drive thru, via the tube or window. The bank teller, who receives the paper, sends out your reward in a sealed envelope with only your code number on it. You simply drive away with your cash reward in hand remaining completely anonymous.

Crime Stoppers wants you to get involved without getting involved. In order to keep your communities and schools safe, Crime Stoppers needs your help. Crime Stoppers is the only organization of its kind that offers anonymity to the callers and cash rewards for information leading to the arrest and indictment of offenders. There are No Names, No ID, and No Court. The program is based on the simple principal that for every crime committed, someone, other than the perpetrator, has information that would help solve it. It’s everyone’s responsibility to get involved. If not for you, then do it for your family. Help Crime Stoppers protect the ones you love. Get involved today!

For more information on how to get involved, visit the Crime Stoppers website; www.crimestoppersbr.com or call 225-344-STOP.

How Crime Stoppers keeps you anonymous:

When you phone into Crime Stoppers by calling 225-344-STOP, your call goes through a secure line, in which your phone number can not be traced. Members of Crime Stoppers are waiting to take your call. You are never asked to give your name, telephone number, or address. You are given a code number that identifies the case, in which the information you are giving is related. The information that is given to Crime Stoppers, through the call center, is then given to the police detective who is working the case that your information pertains to. Every second counts when it comes to catching criminals and keeping your communities safe.

How to claim your reward: Remember that code number we spoke about earlier that callers are given when they report information? Periodically, you must call into Crime Stoppers and give them the code number you were assigned for an update on the case. Once an arrest has been made, Crime Stoppers will tell you if you are eligible for a cash reward. If so, you are advised to call back at the first of the following month. At that time, you will again give Crime Stoppers your code number and identify the type of crime your information pertained to. A secret code word will then be supplied to you. They will advise you to write on a blank sheet

of any kind, and you can see the delivery truck, you may feel like it is safe to open the door. In that case, call a neighbor or friend, tell them the situation and ask them to remain on the line while you open the door to receive your package. Ask them to contact 911, for you, if they hear any suspicious conversation between you and the delivery person.

Always set your alarm. If you are home alone, you should always have your alarm armed. If you don’t have an alarm system, contact Certified Alarm Systems today at 225-928-STOP (7867.) If you do have an alarm system and you feel in danger, remember to use your silent alarm. This lets the command center know that you are in danger and they will notify police immediately.

Special DeliveryA STRANGER AT YOUR DOOR

With Valentine,s Day approaching, there will be a lot of deliveries made to people’s homes

and workplaces. This time of year, it is especially important to be cautious of who you open your door for. Burglars and rapists use this opportunity to prey on victims.

Remember to Always lock your door.

If you are at home alone and are not expecting any deliveries, be cautious when someone you don’t know is at the door. If you have a peep hole, remember to look before you open. If you don’t have one, look outside through the window. Try to identify the person if you can. If identification can not be made ask the person to move into view so you can make a positive ID. Ask the person what they need before opening the door. Never tell a person that you are home alone.

Do not open the door for ANY stranger. This may include: Sales Reps, canvassers, kids selling magazines or cookies, or a man in distress. These could be cons to get you to open your door for what could be a rapist or burglar. Package delivery person- even in uniform. Uniforms are easy to steal or get other ways. Have them leave the package outside, even if it is raining. Wait until the truck leaves and wait about 30 minutes before retrieving the package. If the person outside your door refuses to leave or insists you open the door, call 911 immediately. You may be in danger. If it is a delivery

If you return to your home and there is a wrapped present at your front door, without proper identification on it, there could be an explosive device inside. If you feel like it could be of danger to you, call the police immediately.

As a fellow officer, I had the Honor of working side by side with Deputy Kiger while employed with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office. As always, we have had a great working relationship with the businesses of our community. When I was informed of Certified’s Fallen Police Officers Program, in honor of one of our own, I was overwhelmed. A Special Thanks to Rusty and Jan Howard for giving fellow officers peace of mind. Knowing after our last shift has ended, Certified Alarms, a pillar of this community, has made a stand to help watch over our families if we are taken from them. This courtesy, makes everything worth it. I know that Officer Kiger would be honored as well. May God bless you and those who help make this possible.
