Gordon & Jo Bruce welcome you to Ferryman Polytunnels
Our aim is to provide quality products and personal service at a reasonable price
Ferryman Polytunnels Ltd is a Family owned Business, based in Devon and has been making Polytunnels for over thirty years. During this time, Ferryman Polytunnels has developed a quality range of tunnels designed especially for the individual needs of the amateur gardener and allotment holder, through to the commercial horticultural market.
Each Polytunnel is made to order so you can personalise it to suit your needs. We have even supplied Polytunnels for boats, cars, chickens, ponds, swimming pools and aquaponics to name but a few.
The Ferryman Classic Polytunnel range is designed to be solid and strong, but if you are sited in an area which experiences extreme weather conditions then our Tuff tunnel range using the same polythene but larger tube sizes, could be more suitable for your needs.
All our polytunnel frames are made from quality steel tube with 1.5mm wall thickness, which is galvanized inside and outside for maximum corrosion protection. We use a hoop spacing of 5ft, for all but the 21ft and 24ft wide Tunnels which have a 6.5ft spacing and gives the frame tremendous strength compared to some of the other polytunnels on the market which have wider spacings. Our hoops are made in two halves, reducing the need for extra bracing.
Door Frames are 3’ on our 8’ wide Tunnels, 3’ 6” on 10’ and 12’ tunnels, 4’ wide on 14’ tunnels, 16’ to 24’ tunnels have 8’ openings, enabling easy access and giving good ventilation.
If you would like a diff erent door width let us know. Door frames are made using 3” x 2” timber on all except the 21’ and 24’ tunnels which have 3” x 3” door frames.
This ensures that the door frames are capable of holding the polythene without bowing and we also supply extra side and head support on the 8’ wide door frames. All the timber that is used has been pressure treated using, Tanalith E preservative which helps protect the timber against insect attack and rot.

Some people know what they want but for those who would like some help please consider
the following or contact us for help.If is preferable to construct a polytunnel on a level site, with the prevailing wind on the side of the tunnel, but this is not essential as we often get strong winds from other directions. A Polytunnel can be constructed on a slope although it is not ideal. When running the polytunnel along a slope the foundation tubes might need to be set higher one side to allow for the slope. The polytunnel is best run lengthways down the slope with the hoops set vertically. If Side Ventilation is required please contact us to discuss this. Extra polythene or longer foundation tubes may be required when constructing on a slope please ring us.
You can extent the length of a polytunnel should you wish, and the best time to do this is when you replace the cover.
The layout of the growing areas within a polytunnel is also worth considering, whether you will dig over the whole fl oor area or if you are going to have raised beds. These are best fi tted into the tunnel before the cover is put on. The positioning of the beds can vary depending on the width of the tunnel. Two beds along the tunnel length in a smaller tunnel and three beds along the length with two paths separating them equally in wider tunnels.
It is not essential to prepare the ground beforehand, as this can be done when the frame is in place, and it is easier to dig clean edged trenches to bury the polythene if the soil has not been previously disturbed. The foundation tubes will also hold better if the ground has not been deeply dug.
Ground cover makes an ideal fl oor covering either inside or out. Its woven construction combines outstanding weed suppression with excellent water permeability.
We off er a choice of polythene covers see page 7 for full details. Shade netting can be used instead of polythene to protect plants that do not like direct sunlight and require protection from extreme weather conditions. The fruit cage net with a 20mm mesh is ideal to use over a tunnel frame to protect fruit, vegetables or fi sh ponds. We are also able to supply a made to measure 30% Green Shade net cover to fi t tunnels, which will keep out Butterfl ies.
The traditional method for fi xing the cover is by digging a trench around the base of the tunnel (except doorways) and burying the bottom edges of the cover. This is still the preferred method for many people but base rails are an alternative to trenching for fi xing the cover and many people now prefer this method and fi nd it easier to get the polythene tight. Anchor plates should be used with a base rail or the foundation tubes concreted in place, to ensure the polytunnel is securely held in the ground. Ground sockets with timber rails can be used if the Tunnel is to be fi xed onto a solid concrete base.
Tunnels over 50ft long may need extra side ventilation, and a side vent kit can be fi tted. When a side vent is used, you will need anchor plates on the foundation tubes or to concrete the foundation tubes into the ground as you would when fi tting any base rail.

Choice of doors
The tunnel price includes, for Tunnels up to and including 14’ wide, 2 Hinged Doors. The options are to upgrade to a Sliding Door at one or both ends, or alternatively to have no doors but make them yourself.
For 16’ wide Tunnels and over we include a pair of Hinged Doors for both ends, the options are to choose to have a pair of Sliding Doors at one or both ends, or again to have no doors and to make your own. We also off er Louvre windows as an alternative for one end.
What’s included
Your Tunnel Kit comes complete with Foundation Tubes, Anti Hotspot Tape, Galvanised Steel Hoops, Ridge Bars and Brace Bars. Door Frames, Doors, Fixings and your choice of Cover. This will give you all you need to construct your Tunnel.
Anti Hotspot Tape
We recommend the use of this to protect your polythene cover from the metal surfaces. It will help prolong the life of the polythene.
Crop Bars
Fitted across the hoops, can be used as crop support and for hanging baskets. They also help brace the tunnel in windy and snowy conditions, adding up to 20% extra strength when a full set is fi tted.
Anchor Plates
These are fi tted to the foundation tubes when using a Timber Base rail or if your ground is particularly soft when burying the polythene. You do not require these if you decide to concrete in the
Foundation Tubes. You will get a full set, one for each foundation tube. We recommend concreting the Foundation Tubes into the ground on large tunnels especially 21’ and 24’ wide.
Ground Sockets
Are used when you wish to fi x your Polytunnel to a concrete or timber base (i.e. railway sleepers). You need to ensure that the base is substantial enough to be sure of a secure fi xing. These are used in place of the foundation tubes.

Base rails
Are used as an alternative to trenching for fi xing the cover. We recommend that anchor plates should be used with a base rail or the foundation tubes concreted in place, to ensure the polytunnel is securely held in the ground.
Side Ventilation Kit
Extra ventilation is essential for polytunnel structures longer than 50’ (16m) to avoid hot spots in the centre. A side vent allows ventilation down the length of the tunnel.
Side vent is supplied per side, if ventilation is required both sides then two kits are needed. Base Rail not included.
Wind-up Side Kit
Add this to the Side Ventilation Kit to make a deluxe side vent kit. Supplied with a wind-up gear box, this kit allows easy control of your tunnel’s ventilation. Wind-up Vent Kits are supplied per side, if ventilation is required both sides then two kits are needed. Base rail not included.
Louvre Windows
These are an option for one end of the tunnel adding simple but elegant ventilation control, with adjustable locking positions. Available for tunnels 16ft wide and over.
Door Drop Bar and Ridge Braces
Are standard on the 21ft and 24ft tunnels. They span from the ridge bar to the door frame, adding extra support to the end of the tunnel.
Irrigation
The use of a hosepipe can lead to irregular watering. An overhead irrigation using 20mm polyethylene pipe with a weighted down tube, the sprinkler is designed to hang 2m above crops with 4m coverage. The system requires 2 bars pressure with a fl ow rate of 40 l/h per sprinkler. These are made to fi t the tunnel size ordered. Alternatively, a T-Tape ground system (page 22) in your polytunnel can be added after you have planned your layout. Either of these systems will save you time and your plants. Add a simple timer to the system to give you more control over your watering.

What will you need to put up a polytunnel?
Tools needed: A spade, pegs and string for marking out, tape measure, lump hammer, sprite level, claw hammer, 13mm spanners or a socket set, screwdrivers (pozi-drive), Stanley knife or scissors for cutting the polythene and a step ladder for reaching the ridge on the bigger tunnels. Drill (preferably a good cordless) plus 3mm and 9/10mm bits will be required when fi tting doors, frames and timber base rails. A saw for trimming timber, pencil, gloves, a cloth and a small amount of white spirit or petrol, to remove grease off the tubes before fi tting the Anti Hotspot Tape.
How is a Polytunnel put up?
You will receive a detailed set of instructions with your Polytunnel Kit, but the following gives a brief guide to construction.
Mark out position of the foundation tubes or ground sockets, starting with the corners, ensuring the diagonals are equal. Knock the foundation tubes into the ground, or if fi tting a base rail dig out for anchor plates or concreting.
Clamps and clips are fi tted to the half hoops which are then inserted into the foundation tubes. Next fi t the ridge tube and brace bars.
Door frames are attached to the front and back hoops using the P clips and the bottom ends of the timber uprights are dug into the ground. Dig the trenches or fi t the base rail. Anti Hotspot Tape is stuck on and then the cover is fi tted. This is attached to the inside of the door frame at each end, and either buried in the trench, or fi tted onto a timber base rail. It is important to get the polythene tight, for best results.
Fit doors, then you’re ready to grow!
If you have not constructed a polytunnel before, you will need to allow time and have patience. Reading the instructions carefully really does help!
However, if you do have problems we are happy to help.

Polythene Covers
SunMaster Diff usedSuitable for crops where the structure will not be heated but a small degree of frost prevention is desirable and where reduced summer temperatures would be an advantage. Diff used Polythene spreads the light and in winter, light levels are higher than under glass or clear polythene. SunMaster Diff used uses the latest Thermal Heat Barrier.
Not only does it diff use the light which minimises scorching but It will be cooler inside your tunnel in hot weather than clear fi lms. Its ability to allow the same amount of UV into the tunnel as your plants get outside gives speedier rooting, and stronger bushier plants. Research has shown that edible crops grown under full UV conditions contain more antioxidants than crops grown under normal polythene or glass.
SunMaster Clear Suitable for crops where the structure will not be heated but a small degree of frost prevention is desirable.
Sterilite SuperThermic Ideal if using heat in the polytunnel.
Was the fi rst commercially available fi lm to block all the Ultra Violet light up to 380Nms. UV blocking is proven to reduce fungal and aphid attacks so take the UV away and they struggle to survive so you don’t have to use any chemicals, making Sterilite ideal for organic growers.
Sterilite will be warmer in the winter, extending the growing season into the Autumn and bringing it forward in the Spring.
We can supply other types of polythene such as, SunMaster ChrystalTherm where maximum light is essential, SunMaster SuperThermic which has similar properties to the Sterilite but allows the UV light through, Smart Blue for growth control without the need for chemicals, Smart Green for shade loving plants. Please contact us for more details.

Questions and Answers
How Long Will A Polytunnel Last? There is no reason why our galvanised steel polytunnel frames would not last 20 years and more. The poly-thene cover will need replacing, although the polythene supplied has been developed with resistance against sunlight. The additives in a polytunnel cover prevent UV degradation for up to 5 years and it is not uncommon for a cover to last 8-10 years.
Do I Need Planning Permission For a Tunnel? Normally you do not need planning permission for a domestic size or garden polytunnel. If the polytunnel meets with any of the following criteria, you should contact your local planning department to determine if planning permission is required. • In general you do not need planning permission for polytunnels. However you will need to apply for planning permission if the polytunnel is nearer to any road than the nearest part of the house, unless there’s at least 20m between the polytunnel and a road • If the polytunnel would have any part forward of the front of the house. • If the polytunnel would be more than 3m in height. • If the polytunnel is to be sited in a field, then change of use may apply • If the site on which you intend to construct the polytunnel has a listed building or is in a Conservation Area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, There are further restrictions to planning within these areas. • If the polytunnel would be for commercial use • If you want to build a large commercial polytunnel or more than one tunnel, or if you have any queries or questions, please contact your local planning department for further advice.

Do Polytunnels Blow Away? No. Many people believe that they cannot have a polytunnel as their garden or allotment is a very windy site. If constructed according to the instructions, a polytunnel will give many years of use. When constructing a polytunnel it is important to ensure that the framework is well anchored to the ground and, most importantly, that the polythene cover is tight. For those sites exposed to extreme weather conditions, we recommend our range of Tuff Tunnels. Concreting in the Foundation Tubes, fitting extra brace bars and adding crop bars, will improve the strength.
What Happens if my Polythene Tears? The polythene used for polytunnel covers is very strong and will not readily tear or split. Accidental holes can happen, these are easily repaired with a UV resistant repair tape.
Can My Polytunnel Be Extended? Yes. A polytunnel can be moved and extended, although we would suggest this is done when the polythene cover requires replacing.
Do You Sell Spare Parts? Yes, we stock a range of spares and accessories. Please call us on 01363 84948 for spares and options available.
