Executive summary
This is a report regarding what is a smartphone on its introduction, how it differs
from other devices, other smart phones, difference in its power, functionality and
use ability, different applications available in it, how it can be used, its impacts in
terms of advantages and disadvantages, and how smartphones will change in the
future.
This report will also include charts, photographs and tables to show extra
information regarding the topic.
Introduction
A smart phone is a device that lets you make calls but together with that it also
has other features that, in the past, were not there and on device such as a
computer had other advanced functions such as sending and receiving e mails but
now with the inventions of the smart phones all this can be done with the use of a
mobile phone.
How smart phones differ from other devices and also their computing power.
There are many ways using which smart phones can be differentiated from other
devices such as:

Topic Computer Smartphone
Power They require greater
amount of power and
cooling as they have more
powerful computing
processors that require
this.
Smartphones do not have
high computing
processors hence they
don’t need a lot of
cooling so they require
less voltage processors
but yet these processors
later become more
advanced and powerful
Cost Computers are very costly
depending on their
capabilities and these
prices start from $400 to
$2000
Smart phones on the
other hand even though
they have various feature
they are not as expensive
as computer as their
prices start from $150 to
$ 500
Storage Computers have a high
memory of 0ne
terabyte(TB) and
continuing to increase but
most computers come
with 250 gigabytes(GB)
Smart phones have
storage, ranging from
8GB to 64 GB with an
additional memory chip
for extra storage.
Although this space is

hard drive which is
enough for users as they
don’t get filled fast
enough in the future as
memory chips will keep
on increasing in size even
the storage capacity will
keep on increasing
Connectivity Although computers can
connect to mobile
networks, they do not
come with equipment
required as mostly they
rely on Wi-Fi
Smartphones do not have
a problem in this as data
plan allows them to
connect to the Wi-Fior
the 3Gnetwork
Portability Laptops require bags to be
carried from one place to
another weighing up 7-8
pounds
Smartphones are light
weight and can be carried
anywhere in a purse or
pocket.

They can be used in form of voice recording, taking photographs, and
shooting videos.
Biggest feature of a smartphones is that it can run applications. These can
be used to see sport scores, display animated cartoons in short they can be
used to make our lives easier.
Applications.
There are many smartphone applications available for users and many more are
invented every day. Modern smartphones can do many things from entertainment
to tracking social networking, reading books; applications are also used in
businesses for translations, exchange currency or even purchase stock.
One of the most popular applications is networking websites which is used
in getting news, knowing accurate weather.
Entertainment is also something that can be done using smartphones for
example the application can be used in watching videos, reading books, or

Smartphones can also be used by business people, but as for them they use
it for a different purpose and these include sharing documents,
downloading file extensions and share presentations.
Another application that is useful for consumers is a map, which can help
them in locating things like nearest bus stops, and also applications are
available to tell users where the cheapest gasoline can be found or when to
book airline flights to save money.

Impacts
Impacts of smartphones can be described in two ways either positive
(advantages) or negative (disadvantages). Some of these include.
Positive effects (advantages)
Communication Options.
Smartphones gives us other options other than calling and texting and these
options are access to email, video calling and video conferencing. You can also
use social networking such as Twitter and Facebook.
Web Everywhere.
9
Manish N Halai Smartphones SC_12_14
Normally to get web you can only get it on your computer using a wire which
could reach your PC. Wireless access and laptops moved to almost everywhere
from houses to offices, smartphones moved further and have made web available
in cars and other Places where there is coverage. Advanced smartphones can now
display nearly as much as internet PCs can, some of these are games and high
definition videos.
Device Merger.
Earlier you needed a bag to carry around all devices needed for your daily business
activities. You would need a cell phone, your PDA, maybe a MP3 player, e-book
reader, and camera and GPS device. Smartphones add all this to your pocket.
Endless Applications.
In the early twenty-first century thousands of smartphone applications were
introduced. Programmings made to the smartphones have made them capable
enough to run all these applications. Beyond games it also gives us access to other
applications such as fitness applications. It also provides Internet radio to get news
of all countries. Moreover it also provides applications that modify photos or
create music tap into creativity.
Smartphones also have negative effects some of these include:
Negative effects (disadvantages)
Disconnect
10
Manish N Halai Smartphones SC_12_14
Some people find it difficult to leave their smartphones as they become addictive;
due to this some people miss something that may happen once in their life time for
example one may miss to see their baby first footsteps because they were busy in
texting.
Texting and driving
We all know that texting while driving is very dangerous. Yet, many of us do this
and end up losing their lives and also of others. Do not let your smartphone
distract you while driving it is not worth it.
Stress
While many of us love staying connected to the net, texts and calls with our
smartphones, they lead us to stress. It is true as for people with high stress jobs.
Every time their phone rings or a message alert is heard the get slight tinge
anxiety. There is no need for this.
Productivity
People usually take their smartphones to use them thinking that they might do one
necessary job then continue with their daily work, but this does not happen some
people often keep on using their smartphones to do other things on their
smartphones.
Sleeping Problems
Smartphones are also linked to sleep problems. It happens to be that a person is
about to sleep he or she picks up his or her smartphone and starts using it, hence in
this way instead of relaxing your mind you are rather adding extra information to it
hence your sleep is disturbed.

Future Smartphones
As the name suggests, smartphones contain smarter capabilities than mobile
phones, providing additional and essential functions such as web browsing,
multimedia entertainment, games much like mini-
computers, but small enough to fit in your pocket.

What should we expect to see in the development of smartphones in the near
future?
Flexible screens
It may soon be that smartphones will be released that are flexible. This will be
by the help of Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology. With such
physical flexibility for smartphones; some companies intend to make flexible
smartphones that can be worn as a wrist watch or even using it as a headset.
In-built projector
12
Manish N Halai Smartphones SC_12_14
Samsung Galaxy Beam was released back in the second half of 2010. It features a
built-in (Digital Light Projection), a WVGA projector that is able to project up to
50 inches in size at 15 lumens image. Now that is not enough so future
smartphones can beturned into an interactive gaming consoles without a need for a
TV but only a flat screen, in which you don’t need a physical controller but only
your voice or your body. But yet you can imagine the amount of battery usage and
other issues such as amount of light input. Hence the smaller it is the better as all
this will be needed in fewer quantities.
Seamless voice control
Smartphones have been given much attention since Siri hit the headlines. Also
other phones including earlier mobile phones had this feature whereas for people
have been trying to use this application combined with a gesture application to
bring the seamless voice control application to a new level for the users.

3D Screen and Holograms
Although apples retina can provide an image that
is sharper than the human eye can see, smartphone
companies are thinking of moving from 2D to 3D.
13
Manish N Halai Smartphones SC_12_14
Though these are already available in some smartphones such as LG Optimus,
Motorola MT810 and also the first Samsung AMOLED 3D. But this is not enough
so 3D screen will be added to a hologram, and this might help us to resize our
photos by using our hands to ‘pull’ or ‘compress’ the holographic photos that
appear in front of you, and also move objects by ‘grabbing’ them from one place
to another.

Conclusion
Smartphones are the future. They have everything one may or will need anytime of
the day. They have various advantages and disadvantages but yet when we look
from a point of view where a person need a the net in a place where you can’t find
a computer smartphones will always help us, and other than the prices I don’t
think we have anything to worry about.
