What is Mindfulness?

•  TraditionalBuddhistpsychologyrelatesmindfulnesstoasenseofcuriosity,openness,compassion,andnon-judgmentalattitudetoanythingonemayexperienceinthepresentmoment.

•  Traditionally,mindfulnesswascultivatedthroughtypesofmeditationsuchasvipassana(insightmeditation)andyoga.Thesepracticesincreasemindfulnessthroughafocusonbodilysensations,suchasbreathandmovement,observationofinternalstates,suchasemotionsandthoughts,andawarenessofone’ssurroundings.

TheconceptformindfulnessfirstappearedinancientBuddhistwritings.ThePaliwordformindfulnessis“sati,”whichmeanshavingattention,awareness,andremembering.Saticanalsobeunderstoodasnon-judgmentalawarenessofthepresentmoment,concentration,anddevelopmentofthemind.

Wecancultivatemindfulnessbyfocusingourawarenessonourpresentexperiencenomatterwhatwearedoing.Thisadditionallymeansthatonecoulduseengagementwiththevisualartsasamethodofincreasingmindfulness.
