Lenten Observances Observances in most churches today include at least two special services—Ash Wednesday and
Maundy Thursday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, and the service is characterized by the
marking with ashes on the forehead with the sign of the cross. The ashes are created by burning the
palm branches from the past year’s Palm Sunday service. The ashes call to mind the aspect of human-
ity that is “ashes to ashes and dust to dust,” and serve as a public acknowledgement of our sin and
mortality. Maundy Thursday is observed on the Thursday prior to Easter Sunday and is traditionally
the day of the Last Supper and the betrayal of our Lord. Oftentimes this is accompanied with symbol-
ic foot washing. The Presbyterian Church describes this as servant-hood. These services allow us as
modern Christians to identify with Christ’s suffering.
Though usually left up to the individual member, some specific activities of Lent are offered by
most churches along with sermons and descriptions of various means of marking the season. These
include fasting from foods and/or festivities; acts of penance; prayer and almsgiving, and the addition
of spiritual disciplines.
Specific observances of the Lenten season vary among denominations and in individual churches,
but several are mentioned here. During Lent (and Advent in many churches) no weddings are held in
the church except under extreme situations. (These might include serious illness, impending death,
impending war, pregnancy, and possibly other reasons.) This is to allow the Christian community to
use its facility with devotion and simplicity solely in preparation for Easter. Any weddings that are
held would not be allowed to include elaborate decorations or celebrations in the church.
During the Lenten season, moderation in decorations is upheld. For the most part, greenery only is
permitted on the altar. Dried plants, rocks, shells, and twigs may also be incorporated. Wreaths with a
woodland theme are suggested. If flowers are permitted, they should be subdued in color—white,
beige, or pale yellow are preferred, and the design should be simple with no shoots or soaring branch-
es.
Many churches cover all crosses, pictures, statues, and any other
ornamental work with white cloths. On Good Friday, black shrouds
these items. The clergy leave off elaborate stoles, and singing is
sometimes unaccompanied. Church bells are not rung, and the
“Gloria” and hymns containing “Alleluia” are omitted.
