The UPLB Economics Society
was once again successful in
conducting the STATA Seminar
for the first semester of the
school year 2013-14.
In partnership with
the Department of Economics
(DE), the STATA Seminar is an
activity which aims to help
College Of Economics and
Management (CEM) senior and
junior students in managing
and processing of their thesis
data through the use of Stata,
a computer application which
processes data. The seminar,
originally done once every
year, will be held twice this
year—once every semester.
The seminar was divided into
the morning and afternoon
session.
The morning session,
which talked about data
management, was held at the
CEM Lecture hall with
Econsoc’s Alumnus and DE
faculty, Prof. Jefferson Arapoc
as speaker. Despite the gloomy
weather, 17 CEM students
attended the morning session
which was composed of 11
senior, 5 junior and 1
sophomore students. The
morning session started at 10
AM and ended at 12 NN.
While the afternoon
session, which tackled about
cross-section, panel, logit and
probit data management, was
held at CEM 111 with Econsoc’s
Alumnus and DE faculty, Prof.
Harvey Baldovino as speaker.
Despite the very strong rain
that afternoon, 14 students still
managed to attend the
afternoon seminar which was
composed 9 senior, 4 junior

session started at 1PM and
ended at 5PM.

Ever wonder why birds fly in flocks and form a V
shape while flying? Aside purposes connected with
reproduction and communication among their kind, it is
interesting to know that they do this as a way to support
each bird in the flock. According to my run-of-the-mill but
fairly reliable research, birds in migration especially those
that go a long distance conserve energy by flying together
and constantly forming shapes like V and a check mark. With
the exception of the one in front, every bird can save energy
by fluttering less than they need to if they fly alone. Even
more interestingand striking, every bird in the flock becomes
a leader at some point of their travel. Once the one in front
gets tired, it will go to the end and the next one takes over.
The cycle continues until they reach a destination. This
behaviour may also exist in other species in the animal
kingdom.
Now, ever wonder if the above facts exist among
human beings? Why, let’s not look very far apart and
recognize the ability of our own race of knowing the exact
moments to come together for the realization of a common
purpose.
26th August, 2013 – around 400,000 Filipinos
gathered at Luneta Park to demonstrate their outrage against
the graft and corruption that areassociated with the Priority
Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel. 4th
October, 2013 – thousands of Filipino gathered once more
for the same purpose, this time in Ayala, Makati City. It’s
always a spectacle every time Filipinos do this kind of act.
It’s courageous and inspiring. You will stand in awe of the
unity that you see. Your patriotism gets rekindled if not flared
way better. Tracing back to the very first EDSA Revolution in
1986 and the succeeding EDSA Revolutions, the same
response also stood out.
It’s already ‘tatakPinoy’ to unite in order to gather
strength despite vast differences in beliefs. These peaceful
massive demonstrations run a long way in our history and
have paved way for us to achieve the kind of freedom we
currently enjoy. We boast of being a prototype of a nation
that has a power to peacefully oust an abusive government.
Most of the countries in the Middle East that joined the
heights of revolution against dictatorship in 2011, took
relatively longer years to actually display their rage against
their oppressive leaders.
While this ability to unite in times of austerity is a
just reason for us to be proud of, it’s also a reason for us to
sit back and realize that every single time Filipinos gather in
large numbers like this, it’s about something not really
flattering, but shameful. Million People March, People
Power/EDSA Revolutions? Sure, overwhelming and really
pleasing a behaviour at quick sight. But a little deeper
fathoming will reveal a cruel truth that ours is not a nation
of powerful and free people, rather an unreasonably
tolerating one. The first successful attempt of a massive
Filipino unity that is EDSA 1 should have been a real
gratification for us. But extending it over 30 years later and
even breeding a variety of it is already pathetic and ironic.
Why have we not learned? Why do we always let this happen
again and again? We can claim it’s not our fault, that we
don’t really have control of what and where our so-called
leaders use our money for. But we do, and we know we can.
Pay attention to the people in the government – most of
them are not who we voted for. By WE, I mean us educated
and middle-class people. Let’s face it, the Philippines has an
utterly larger marginalized and uneducated population than
middle-class to rich one. Those government officials in power
were voted by the former for ill reasons I don’t even have to
enumerate anymore, while majority of the latter always
succumbback to ignorance months after the election.Looking
at this differently, our situation seems to be dependent on
the choices that the poor and vulnerable makes. Our wise
decisions, education and presence in massive
demonstrations are not going to end the irony that is in the
unity of the Filipino people. A large portion of our nation is
slumped in poverty, and empowering this large powerless
portion will give better chances of us finally achieving
prosperity.
Scientists theorize that most behaviour displayed by
animals that go in groups is a way for them to support each
other not only in times of need but for the rest of their
existence. Birds fly in flocks — and in order for them to have
ease in migration, a flock has to have a leader that will endure
exhaustion. But this endurance can only take a certain period
of time and another bird has to come to the rescue and take
over for the flock not to scatter.

To the ones who have
gone and to the ones they
have left behind:
Out of sight
Not out of mind
Certainly not
out of our
hearts.
You must have
been taken
But you have never left
You must have been taken
Physically, slowly, painfully
In the night
By a heartless thief
You are not here
But you are everywhere –
The strange sound of the
wind
Seeking its way into home,
Blowing
Curtain’s graceful dancing
back and forth.
The sun’s rays in my face
through the trees
Or the melody in my old
favorite songs
You are not here
But you are everywhere –
Remembered dreams,
Desperate screams.
Sometimes in the quiet
hymns of the trees
I hear you,
But you are in the loudest
struggles of jeepneys too.
You are not here
But you are everywhere –

Nung una nakatitiglang ako sayo. Nandyan kalang. Dinadaandaan mo ngalang ako nung una. Perosinundan kita. Sinamahan kitakahit saan ka mapadpad. Kahitdi mo ako kita, nandyan langako palagi.
Isang araw bigla kangnadapa. Sinalo kita gamit angaking mga kamay, malamang, para di ka masaktan. Inalalayankita makatayo, at dun nakitakita ngumiti. at sinabi mosalamat.
In my pillow whispering,
Kissing me one more happy
morning
In my prayers,
The grateful feeling
The sincerest greetings –
”Thank you”, “I miss you”
With smiles so true.
You are in the thoughts I
think
The words I speak,
The laughs I laugh
Tears I silently shout.
You are not here,
And it is rather hurting.
I must have grown a little
lonely,
But you are free.
I must have cried a river,
But you are happier
And I, stronger.
You may not be here
anymore,
But you are everywhere
now.
So I believe.
