Four Things to Consider Before Replacing your HVAC Unit

Your HVAC unit keeps your home warm in the

winter and cool in the summer. When your

old system stops working, starts making

funny noises, gets too old, or gives you other

signs of trouble, it may be time to replace it.

These are four things to consider before

replacing your HVAC unit.

The Age of Your Current System

Repairs can go a long way when it comes to HVAC systems, but eventually you need

to replace the system. The general rule of thumb is to replace your system if it is

more than 10 years old. Newer systems are generally more efficient, and they can

have features such as being ductless or having the ability to cool one room at a time

instead of the entire house.

What Size System You Need

You want a powerful enough system to cool your entire home, but getting an HVAC

system that is too big is a waste of money upfront and in operating costs. Larger

systems are also worse at controlling humidity. You can get away with a smaller, less

expensive system by making your home more energy efficient, such as insulating the

windows to reduce heat transfer to the outside.

The Energy Efficiency of the New System

One of the best things about getting a new HVAC unit is it can be more efficient.

Check the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and Heating Season Performance

Factor (HSPF) ratings; higher ratings indicate greater efficiency.

A Licensed Technician for Installation and Maintenance

You will need your new HVAC unit to be installed. In addition, regular maintenance

over the course of its lifetime can include tightening electrical connections and

inspecting controls for wear and ductwork for holes. Make sure to hire a licensed

HVAC technician so you know you are getting dependable, quality service that

extends the life and increases the productivity of your system.
