Well hasn’t Loki been a busy Norse god
lately. For the last few years Loki’s popularity
has gone through the roof, out into space
and into Asgard. Why? I don’t think I can
answer that question. But the fact remains
that a Marvel villain remains more popular
than other greater superheroes.
I’m sure that Loki’s popularity has been
helped by a certain Mr. Hiddleston.
However we’re just going to try and just
focus on the original Loki.
He started off in comics depicted as an old
man and brother of Thor. Rather than the
Loki we know today.
He had long black hair in a pony tail and
black fingernails. We never really got to see
a ‘real’ personality, which was
overshadowed by the drama of revenge. I
think the style of older style of writing was
more focused on the main storyline as a
whole. Rather than the individual, they
definitely weren’t going to focus on a villain
in the 50’s to 90’s. However recently old Loki
went and sacrificed himself and ended up
dead. Poor Thor couldn’t deal with the fact
that his sometimes beloved brother was
gone. So to cut a long story short Thor
brought his brother back. This time he was
starting fresh as a child. Welcome onto the
stage: Kid Loki. Not only is it a chance for
Loki to right his wrong ways, it is also a
chance for us to see personality.
“NOT ONLY IS IT A
CHANCE FOR LOKI
TO RIGHT HIS
WRONG WAYS, IT IS
ALSO A CHANCE FOR
US TO SEE HIS
PERSONAILITY.”
His cheeky, funny and surprisingly loyal. It’s
great to see Loki as we’ve never seen him
before. His a child, but not naive. He can still
hold his own amongst the great and
powerful Norse gods. As time go by we see
Loki join with his brother to fight off evil.

Now not only are people in
love with the older Loki, but
also feel protective towards
little Loki. I’m not sure Marvel
had exactly in mind how
popular Loki was to become,
but I’m sure they are glad
they brought Loki back. Now
Loki is a fabulous teenager.
With mood swings and
‘urges’. The latest installment
of comics are titled: Loki:
Agent of Asgard.
“LOKI
HAS
BECOME
ALMOST
A HERO”
There have only been about
3 issues but they really are
great. I really enjoy how they
are developing Loki as a
character, and it’s great he
has got so much time in the
comics. I hope that they
manage to not go
completely over-board
though. For example I don’t
want Loki from the comics to
just become Tom Hiddleston
from the films. I like a little
character distinction
between my comics and
films. Not too much though!
With his very own comic,
there is also talk of Loki having
his own film. Which I’m not
too sure about at the
moment. I like that there still
isn’t a clear distinction
between Loki being good or
evil. He’s both and I hope he
always will be. It’s more fun
that way.
Boom! Comics has also
released a series called; Loki
Ragnarok and Roll. Which is a
totally amazing title. It sees
Loki doing what he does best,
getting thrown to Earth by his
oh so ‘loving’ father Odin.
Boom! States: “He finds a world
of outcasts that appreciate his
style! While his kin sharpen their
weapons, he picks up an
electric guitar.”
It is such a fun idea and I can’t
wait to get my hands on the
series. But being from the UK it is
difficult to do so.
If you are from the UK too
then you know how difficult it
can be to get newly released
comics. I use: Disposable
Heroes Comics. They are
great for pre-orders and
delivery is fast.
Loki is a fascinating character
and it’s exciting to see that
he is becoming popular. I just
hope it doesn’t become too
much.

In Marvel’s Assembling a Universe we
managed to get a sneak peak at the
Hulk Buster. One suit that most Iron
Man fans were excited to see. We
can hope that this suit may make its
official debut appearance in The
Avengers: Age of Ultron. Check out
Marvels website for more information.
Yay! We finally got a surprise sneak peak at Assassin’s
Creed: Unity. The alpha footage was released at the
end of March. We see France on the eve of the
revolution. There are many theories about in-depth
storylines and characters. It is rumored that this game
could go back to the Kenway bloodline before we
had the privilege of meeting Edward. Could Connor
be back? It may be time to answer those mysteries of
Connor Kenway, tying up some loose ends. Go and
check out the trailer on YouTube if you haven’t done
so yet!
Finally we have a trailer! Hmmm but personally I
have mixed emotions about the look of the film. I
hope it isn’t too Hollywood! But I am going to
give it a fair chance. The cast certainly is strong
and I was surprised to see that it’s all in colour. I
think they may surprise us in the cinema by
making it ‘grey’ then. I hope so anyway!

In 2011 when this film was released I was in my first year at University.
Before starting University I'd always thought outside of the box. I found it
difficult to stay within academic boundaries. It's incredibly difficult for me to
explain how my mind works and I'm absolutely positive that many others
think the same way about their own mind. There is something hidden
beneath my 'normal' thought. It's not a voice or a physical thing. It's a
process of thought that just happens. I suppose the closest thing I can think
of that sort of explains it is 'over-thinking'. It can be scary, frustrating yet
beautiful all the same. I suppose I should give an example.
WELCOME TO ISSUE 3 OF FREE GEEK!
As I am typing this post I am sitting on
an arm chair in my living room. The
open window to my right is blowing in
a cold stream of air. I look out the
window and see the clouds in the sky
with the sun behind them, there is an
aura of warmth amongst the cold
breeze. So I've looked out the
window, seen and felt nature and my
thoughts are along the lines of, 'how
beautiful'. Some people would stop
their train of thought there and get
back to whatever it was they were
doing before. Here is where 'it'
happens. In no time at all I'm thinking
about what's behind the clouds, then
the Earth as a singular mass in the
vast Universe. What is the Universe? It
physically exists, it is not a theory;
we've seen it. What is it that holds
everything together? Will we ever
understand dark matter? What are
our brains capable of? These
questions, thoughts and theories rush
around my head. I know I am very
weird! All I did was look out of the
window. I know it's quite normal to
have moments like this. I need to be
honest and say that almost all the
time this happens. There is not a day
that goes by where I haven't worked
myself into a neurological mess.
When I say always, I mean always. I
find it frustrating that no one close to
me has the exact same way of
thinking. I was naive. I thought I was
the only one who thought this way. In
my mind I had invented 'Philosophy'
although I didn't call it that.
It was when I started University that
my mind opened, and I studied
Modern Liberal Arts. Suddenly there
were people who lived their lives like
this. I didn't know it but I was a pupil of
Socrates before I knew who Socrates
was! I don't want to get off track now,
as I can see myself doing so. I've set
up a little background now, which will
hopefully help you understand my
feelings towards my chosen film;
Melancholia.
I didn't know who Lars von Trier was; I
didn't even really know what
Melancholia meant. I'll be completely
honest I only watched the film
because Alexander Skarsgard was in
it. I went into this film having no idea
whatsoever as to what it was about.
The film begins with a very long slow
motion sequence of the main
characters in the film as the world
around them dies. I remember
thinking that this is strange, I knew
from that moment that this wasn't
going to be your typical 'blockbuster'
movie. The film uses Richard Wagner's
Tristan und Isolde as it's 'soundtrack'.
From the moment we start, there is an
overwhelming sensation of
depression. Although they are moving
they are stuck in their own ways, their
own problems. After the slow moving
sequence, we begin at the wedding

reception of Justine.
We are introduced to many different
aspects of 'normal' life. However
Justine appears frustrated by these
somewhat pointless matters and
difficulties. I relate to her manner of
thinking, I think that's why I (now) love
this film so much. Although, I am
thankful that I'm not to the state of
thinking as she was. I would never act
out my problems in such a way. It
appears that she just wants to
escape from this world of troubles
that are in the grand scheme of
things pointless. Throughout the first
part of the film there are subtle hints
of the impending doom for Earth. But
they in no way over shadow what is
important in this film; the characters
state of mind.
Justine notices a bright red start in
the sky (Antares), but towards the
end of the first part she notices it has
disappeared. Another part I loved is
when a frustrated Justine notices that
her sisters study showcases various
pages of books that feature modern
art. In anger she replaces the
modern art, with images of 'older' art.
“I cAN RELATE
to this
cHARAcTER!”
Including Ophelia by one of my
favourite artists John Everett Millais.
This is something I can strongly relate
too. I didn't quite realize till now how
much I myself relate to this
character!
In Part 2 we see more of Justine's
sister Claire. The severely depressed
Justine is staying with Claire and her
husband John in their estate. Claire
takes on a maternal role for Justine
whose melancholia has taken over
every part of her. The planet is called
Melancholia in the film. I think it
represents something that we all
have in our minds, it is a natural
realization that we fill our lives with
pointless activity, ignoring what is
truly beautiful in the world. It isn't
comfortable to accept (as Claire
shows) it's painful and scary.
The planet is thought to fly-by earth
without impact. After realizing that
this is false the true nature of how
people think is shown. Justine
appears to become more clear
headed as the mortality of the earth
is threatened. I think this is because
this is something real. For Justine this is
real, not a pointless made up
difficulty of humanities life. This is
nature something which we cannot
control. She can relate and accept
this a lot more easily than her sister
Claire, who prefers the comfortable

WELCOME TO ISSUE 3 OF FREE GEEK!
nature of humanities life on earth.
Justine brings Claire and Claire's son
to sit on the lawn by their estate and
accept the impending doom. They
sit together. Waiting. Justine seems
almost at peace, whilst Claire seems
to be far from the character we saw
at the beginning of the film.
*spoiler alert* It is the last shot that
has stuck with me. The planet looms
closer to the earth. In a form of
desperation Claire puts her hands to
her ears and shudders at the
moment of impact. Unsettling is a
word that comes to mind. Then you
are left, alone and yourself almost in
a state of melancholia. I would
argue that if you are not feeling like
this at the end of the film then your
mind just isn't quite ready to accept
that which isn't comfortable.
That's nothing bad nor anything
good. It just highlights the complexity
of the mind. For me the film will
always be a source of relief in the
fact that I am not the only one who
can mentally relate to this film.
I told my parents to watch the film,
and they just didn't feel the same
way as I did. It angered me, how
can they not see what I see? Well I
told myself, because not everyone is
the same, and that is another
beautiful fact about the human
brain. It doesn't stop me from
thinking, however, that I wish with all
my heart that they and others could
see what
lies beyond their Facebook profile or
the clouds in the polluted sky.
We can all learn something from the
way we think and experience this
world. Ask yourself uncomfortable
questions, read unnerving scientific
facts. At the end of your life, you are
faced with the fact that your mind
will never think again. As an active
member of this Earth you will be no
more. You have no say in it. I'm
terrified of death, but in some
strange way I find a form of clarity in
accepting my pathlessness. I want to
experience the truth. Not religion, but
nature. That is the truth. Whatever
you get from nature can be your
truth. So with that thought I am
finishing this post. Getting off my
laptop and going outside because I
don't want to be comfortable!
“IT ANgEREd mE,
how can they
not see what I
see? Well I told
mYSELf.”
You can buy Melancholia from most
online stores. On Amazon is it currently
£8.49

Ah collecting. What joy, what fun
and what a heartache for our
bank account. Well it is
sometimes anyway.
I love collecting all sorts of things. For some
reason I find it quite therapeutic. One of my
favorites is comic books. I love going to a
comic book store and finding a random
comic in the middle of a storyline. Then
hunting for the complete set. There’s nothing
like when you finally find the last comic to
complete your collection. That applies to
whatever you collect! What a nerdy thing
to say! I’ve put together a few collectables
that are usually under £10. Most importantly
remember your collection should reflect what
you like. Not just collecting for the sake of it.
So these examples reflect me. They are
relativity easy to come across as well.
I hope that you don’t feel an overwhelming
urge to spend too much money on your new
collecting adventure. Start of simple and
slow. Enjoy having a hobby of collecting. It
doesn’t just have to be for the rich. Also don’t
forget to try and support your local comic
book stores as well as buying from online
shops such as eBay etc.

he first Marvel
Cinematic Universe film
not to have a cameo by
Stan Lee.
Adam Sandler, David
Tennant, Sharlto Copley and
Jim Carrey were all
considered for the voice of
Rocket Raccoon.
Eddie Redmayne, Jensen
Ackles, Lee Pace, Jim
Sturgess, and James
Marsden were just a few of
the well known actors who
auditioned for the part of
Peter Quill aka Star Lord.
To prepare for the role of
Nebula, Karen Gillan shaved
her head.
The first non-Avengers Marvel

The mercenary/pirate
Nebula – played by Karren
Gillan – claimed to be the
granddaughter of the evil
titan Thanos in the comics.
Rocket Raccoon and Groot
will be created through a
mix of motion-capture and
rotomotion VFX.
The Guardians of the Galaxy
is primarily based on the
2008 comic team (Star-Lord,
Gamora, Nova, Drax,
Rocket and Groot), but
features Yondu, a member
of the original 1969 comic
team.
Iron Man was planned to
have a cameo role in this
film (in homage to his being
the Guardians’ latest
member in the comics
around 2013), but this was
scrapped when Robert
Downey Jr. said he may not
reprise his role as Tony Stark
in the future. Downey has
since signed a contract to

You have to read The
Giver. It is actually the law.
Of course I am joking but
please try and read it. I
think in this case it would
be best for you to read
the book before you see
the film. It is due for
release later this year.
What are you waiting for?
I can’t say at the moment
whether it is going to be
any different from the Sims
3 let alone better. But it is
only around £38 on
Amazon at the moment.
So while it’s cheap you
should pre-order now.
Shots of Awe is a relativity new and
upcoming YouTube channel. It
explores the wonders of our Universe
that are bound to blow your mind. It’s
not complicated or overly scientific.
It’s simply wonderful.

I'll always be the first to say that I truly think The Big Bang theory is one of the
best (if not THE best) sitcom on TV. I love it. I can relate to so much of it and it's
great to see that it's not a TV show full of try-hards and models. I know that some
people feel that they are over-stereotyped. But when it comes to fictional TV
shows you have to allow for a little stereotyping. At least this stereotyping is of
the best kind of people: nerds! Anyway, this post is similar to the Netflix posts that
I used to do. I will start them again soon! Here is a little fashion inspired by some
of the fabulous cast of The Big Bang Theory.

I didn't want to do the typical skinny jeans for Leonard. So I decided on a fabulous skater skirt
that you can never go wrong with. I also love the glasses from Boots, I own a pair which are
prescription. However I'm sure you can get them with normal lenses.

Poor Howard isn't known for his great style in clothes! I tried to stay as true as I could to Mr
Wolowitz's unique fashion sense. I love the tartan blouse, that isn't your typical over-bearing
tartan pattern. Instead of a hideous belt buckle I decided a cute Trekky brooch is much more
befitting.

I love this outfit! It's cute yet simple. The black hair bow is my favourite. In fact due to limit
finances at the moment I have a whole list of bows that I want to make from my massive

needle and thread. I usually just sew a bobby pin to the back.

I'm only going to focus on Black Flag as it's the newest in the franchise; and I
think the best. I really enjoyed the story line of the game, as it focused on the
pirating and not essentially on Assassins. You were still aware that first and
foremost Kenway was a pirate; and a kick-ass one at that. I put together a list of
people I think should play them in a Black Flag movie. That's always fun.
