then had a competition. Our
geriatricolympics as I called
them! The Olympic memory defi-
nitely lives on if the spirit of com-
petition here was anything to go
by. We had two teams of 6the
Bright and Breezies against the
Lack-a-Daisies. Over the course
of three rounds, the Bright and
Breezies lived up to their name by
achieving a whopping score of
124 and so gained the gold medal.
The Lack-a-Daisies could not
match them Im afraid but did
come a very respectable second!!
No losers here. The overall high-
est score was achieved by LizRoberts who managed to knock
down 26 out of 30 skittles in total.
We started this
months meeting by
testing our memories
about names of cars.
Yes, cars! We had a
brain teaser quiz which
Shirley brought along
and it certainly got us
thinking. The ladies
did extremely well and
managed very respect-
able scores in the 20s
from only 25 questions.
Well done everybody.
Shirley had brought
along the skittles so we
Modestly, she said she had had
more years to practise but really
she was just brilliant! Well done
Liz!
Shirley finished by reading us
some sayings by famous people.
These gave us a chuckle and some
made us think about the yearswhich have passed by.
Thank you to everyone for a lovely
afternoon.

September Lunch in Meltham
Once again we had a record number of members for lunch on Friday 7th Sept. Wehope our numbers may keep rising. The members enjoyed a lunch of Meat/PotatoPie with vegetables. Fresh Fruit Salad for dessert. The raffle was drawn whilst eve-
ryone enjoyed a tea or coffee.
The entertainment today was Batley Audio Visual Club presented by Steve.
Without leaving our seats Steve transported us to Thorpe Park Gardens, Kenya,Barbados, South Africa and last but not least Leeds Castle and Gardens with a slide
show and music.
In Thorpe Park Gardens we saw all the beautiful colours of autumn and the sun-shine filtering through the trees onto the lake. The music by Mozart was most en-
joyable.
The swaying palms on the streets of Kenya also the nut and fruit trees. The colour-ful clothes of the workers at a Creche for children.
Lively music being played as visitors arrive at The Royal Yacht Club in Barbados.
The National Park and Table Top Mountain in Cape Town. The beautiful colours of
the trees and plants.
All the members enjoyed listening to Chris De Burghs song Lady in Red.
The black and white swans gliding so serenely by on the lake at Leeds Castle andGardens. Views from inside the Castle should make an interesting place to visit. The manicured lawns with colourful flower borders. The Bird Garden and lots of
wild life. The slides showed children visiting. Tranquillity comes to my mind.
We listened to poems whilst music was played on an instrument of the time. Heard
about Shakespeare and his Lady. The audience showed their appreciation by their applause and we hope Steve will
visit us again next year.
A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who did a great job preparing and servingthe lunch in my absence.

everything went down
hill. The staff was reduced
to 8, the oak trees were
commandeered to make new
ships. The oaks were re-
place by Pine trees. The
house began to fall apart
and was made into flats and
people were given permis-
sion to take any plants they
wanted.
The estate was then known
as The Brambles as it was
absolutely take over by
them. So it was The Lost
Gardens of Heligan for 70
years. In 1990 two men
started to try and find the
gardens again, but of course
came up with allsorts of
council opposition, but even-
tually were able to start on
their scheme. They looked
back at the 1777 plans to try
to find a way in through all
the brambles and eventually
found the paths that would
take them to the conservato-
ry and boiler house. They
actually found a pineapple house, which was heated by
horse muck. Prince Philip was given the second pineap-
ple to be grown there, as a peasant had to try the first
one!
When the gardens were first planted there were over
3000 types of Rhododendron, but unfortuanately now
there is a blight about which is affecting the bush-
es. There is a scheme to preserve the plants, but look
out for it if you have some R......s
Of course now it is a wonderful place to visit, with all
the necessary cafes etc. I went a good few years ago,
but this talk has certainly put it on my list of things to
do next year, to see what changes they have made.
Jean then tested our brains with a short but quite diffi-
cult general knowledge quiz. Marjorie Brown, Hazel
Locke, Gladys Kendal and Greta Hinchliffe came out
tops.
The raffle was won by Joyce Brooke, Gladys Kendal,
Freda Tinsley, Marjorie Brown, Mary Wadsworth and
Dorethea Tarbatt.

This month Mr. Metcalf came
to tell us how the Gardens of
Heligan were lost and then
found again, and a great tale
it was too. The estate,
down in Cornwall belonged
to the Tremain family, but
unfortunately, over the years
the gardeners yearly record
books were lost in floods or
bombed. It is know that the
estate was self sufficient and
only bought in coal, but
grew everything else to
make charcoal, cider, ale
(two of the most importantthings) and had a brick-
works. It was not the Squire
but the head gardener who
ran the estate, but made
sure that the ladies were
looked after as they planted
a wide border of scented
flowers around the vegetable
plot, to keep the stink of the
horse manure from the la-
dies as they took their walksaround the estate.

21st SeptemberMembers watched a presentation of material from RobertOpie1950s Scrapbook. Members were quite surprised todiscover that many of the brands that still exist from thatdate tended to be sold with the old designs. After lunch NeillBeaumont entertained us with songs from the 50s. Manythanks to him.Jill continued to work on 50s fashion. the members contin-ued with their own designs. Some of them have considera-ble skill and progress is good. The groups worked in twohalves again, the other half studied lists of films of the 50s,
60s and 70s and talked about their favourite films from thoseeras. Two late husbands seemed to have been very keen onthe film Zulu.Shirley
This month we all got into a sticky mess having a go at making paper mache
bowls. We started by tearing up paper into strips, then these were pasted onto
throwaway plastic bowls and left to dry. At our next meeting the bowls were dry
and were ready to come away from the base. They took a little encouragement but
eventually they came out successfully. All that was needed then was a lick of paint, decoration and then finally a layer of varnish. This time we managed a couple of
coats of paint.
We finished our meeting with a picture quiz of 1960s, 70s British TV comedy
