Overview
• FTTX- It is a generic term for network using Optical Fiber. The types can be:
FTTN- Fiber to the NodeFTTC- Fiber to the Curb / CabinetFTTP- Fiber to the PremisesI. FTTB- Fiber to the BuildingII. FTTH- Fiber to the Home

Overview
• AON (Active Optical Network)
- AON is a fiber network that uses fiber and active components like repeaters and amplifiers for network distribution.- Expensive compared to passive networks.- High coverage range (~100kms) due to regeneration of signals.- Consumes lots of fiber.- Currently being used for enterprise network.

Overview
• PON (Passive Optical Network)
- A PON is a fiber network that only uses fiber and passive components like splitters and combiners for network distribution.- Less costly than active networks.- Low coverage range (<20kms) due to limited signal strength.- Less fiber and central equipment required compared to Point-to-Point architecture.- It is the basis for FTTH.

Types of PON
• GPON (Gigabit PON)- The one which we will use-Separate encapsulation method is used called as GEM (Gigabit Encapsulation Method).-Data rate is upto 2.5Gbps.
• EPON (Ethernet PON)--The data are carried on Ethernet frames. It is carried over IP network.- Data rate is upto 1 Gbps.

FTTH
- Typical arrangement is for Point-to-Multipoint network.
- Form of Fiber-optic communication that delivers high speed service to customer home or living space.- Can be used for Triple play service (Data, Video, Voice).- High bandwidth for OTT (Over the Top) content delivery.- FTTH is the total network comprising from OLT to ONU/ONT.- The downstream is on wavelength 1490nm and upstream is on 1310nm. For video it is 1550nm.- In GPON, in the downstream, the data packets are broadcasted and in upstream, transmission of data are done through TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access). That means, time slots are provided to each ONU.

FTTH
• Advantages:
I. A single core can be separated into multiple cores, hence the usage of fiber can be drastically reduced.
II. Passive components are used for distribution, so point of failures are reduced.
III. Low cost of deployment compared to Active network.IV. Higher data ratesV. Power requirement is extremely less, since only OLT needs to
be powered up.VI. Value added service such as Video and VoIP without any
network upgrade.

FTTH
• Disadvantages:
I. Monitoring is an issue due to passive network.II. Much expensive regarding network coverage
compared to Wireless network.III. Complicated installation as optical power level
is of prime importance on this type of setup.IV. Multiple points of loss (Cable loss, Connector
loss, Splitter loss, Splicing loss, etc.)

*Optical Link Budgeting
• P = L*a+N1*b+N2*c+N3*d+N4*e+f,Where,P= Optical power level,L= length of optical fiber & a= fiber loss (dB) / km,N1= no. of fusion splicing & b= splicing loss per pt.,N2= no. of connectors & c= connector loss,N3= no. of mechanical splicing & d= mechanical splicing lossN4= no. of splitters & e= splitter loss, andF= engineering margin (2 dB)
