An illustration of contextualised and functional tasks

Contextualised:

Areas to develop

Centres need to help learners develop skills to:

• Recognise situations in which functional skills can make a positive contribution

• Apply their functional skills appropriately to a range of tasks and problems

• Reflect on the role that their skills have played in handling these situations

• Become increasingly independent in their learning and in the application of their skills and knowledge

The functional skills readiness tool

Why is it useful? Your self-assessment helps

you develop an improvement plan and identify what further development/support is needed to roll-out functional skills successfully

Who is it for Senior managers in: Sixth form college FE college Specialist colleges Diploma Consortium 14-19 Consortium Secure Estate Probation Service Voluntary sector provider ACL WBL training providers

What is it The Readiness tool is a

downloadable questionnaire cross-referenced to the Post-16 Common Inspection Framework

What does it do It helps providers to rate

aspects of their planning/delivery of functional skills

How can I use the readiness tool? See www.fssupport.org under training and support You can request a free half-day consultancy visit to

help implement and monitor the improvement plan. Alternatively, the self-assessment can be conducted
