We are informed by dealers ¿patthe sale of valentines 4s Unsually large this year in this locality., AS silly as the custom isi it seetns to retain its bold upon a "remarkably large number throughout tfeo country, The variety'most pepid^r id the so-called “comic/’ although vul-i "gar ana coarse are the adjectives which most fitly describe these gaudy daubs. It is a somewhat singular fact that'many hundredsof these ""penny libelers are sent throught the postoffice every Valentine’s day, dnd what! is true of thifil place is probably true of almost every poatoffice ip the United States. Presumably they are sent as the most convenient method of gratifying aj feeling of jealousy, spite or anger on the part of the person investing in them, or possibly in some, cases they are sent in a spirit of pure fun. Bull in any case they do not speak veryhighly of the good sense of the sender and place him am ong th a t classof cowards known as anonymousletter- writers.

The sort of valentines next highest in demand are those of the low- priced ‘‘sentimental’’ order. These range from .five to ten cents each and are purchased chiefly by school children and are supposed to express the tender feelings such as aren o t infrequently bro iight to th e su rface by boy and girl love. Thiastyle is represented! by the well-re-m©mbe4ed verse

T H EY FLOOD ITHACA WITH SHOW FA PEB.

Three people representing BillyEmerson’s great m instrel company, which is to appear a t W ilgus Hall this* week Saturday evening, arriveed in town this morning and commenced scattering bills prolusely on the streets, law ns and in places of business. t

This p a rty is headed by Mr. Sam. Joseph, a gentlem anly and personal representative of th a t veteran showm an Mr. Hooley, who is the proprietor of the Megatherian Minstrels.- Lo and behold, Mr, John M. McN a m a r a , a la r m in g to b e t h e a u t h o r

A reporter called upon Mr. W ilgus who said th a t he was acquainted w ith Mr., John H averly who had not secured the hall norbooked his entertainment. Subsequently Mr. Joseph Pandea tub reporter the following card,—allaying all doubt on the sub ject:

Mr. Joseph whose appearance and words secure credence for him any where, informed a representative ofthe J ournal that Haverly’s Min strels would not come to Ithaca ;that they did not intend so to do ;that th is was a fact he pledged his word as a gentleman; the failure to fix a date and only the vague assertion of Mr. McNamara that sometime in the latte r p a rt of March the Mastodons will come is the only w arran t for stay ing away from the greatest burnt,c o r k e n t e r t a in m e n t n o w t r a v e l l i n g ,

“This m instrel w ar was organized by Mr. H averly in a w esterd c ity toruin R. M. Hooley. It is carried on relentlessly bu t our business is not in jured by it. I t causes the peopleto investigate for themselves and the result is that we have orowdodbouses w herever we go. Our expenses, however, a re largely Incre&s-ep .by this guerilla warfare.
