Widespread use of high-speed compu te rs , wi th emphasis on economizing th e number o f o pe ra t io ns re qui red i n comp u t a t i o n s , h a s r e s u l t e d i n c o n s id e r a b l e renewed i n t e r e s t i n t h e power of t h egauss ian techn ique; gauss quadr a tu re rules a re be ing tabu la ted and used wi thinc rea s in g f requency . Very acc ura te ru les , for example , were r e c e n t l y t a b u l a t e d i n r e f er e n c e s 1 and 5 f o r cases a s s o c i a t e d w it h t h e c l a s s i c a l o r th o go n apolynomials o f Legendre, Laguerre, Chebyshev, Jacobi, and Hermite. Recentn u me ri c al t a b l e s t o many s i g n i f i c a n t f i g u r e s h av e a l s o b ee n g iv e n f o r somen o n c l a s s i c a l cases such as a weight funct ion on [ O , 11 h a v in g l o g a r i t h m ic s i n g u l a r i t i e s ( r e f . 6) and th e weigh t func t i on e - X 2 o n t h e i n t e r v a l [ O , m]( r e f . 7 ) .
Weighted g auss i an in te gr a t io n fo rmulas are e x c e l l e n t f o r l a r g e c l a s s e s of un c ti on s a r i s i n g i n p r a c t i c e . They are p a r t i c u l a r l y u s e f u l w h e n a completei n t e g r a n d g ( t ) i s f a c t o r a b l e i n t o two f u n c t i o n s f ( t ) and w( t ) , where f i swel l approximated by a polynomial , w i th th e nonnega t ive weight fun c t i on whaving a s i n g u l a r i t y o r a s i n g u l a r d e r i v a t i v e a t one o r both ends of thei n t e r v a l .
