This is a rarely seen sea creature that washed ashore on a Mexican beach in October 2012. Its biological name is Regalecus glesne, or king of herrings, and it’s the longest bony fish in the world. It resides at depths ranging from 600 to 3,000 feet and rarely comes up to the surface, which is why sightings are rare. It’s considered to be a prime candidate for the origin of the legends of the sea serpent. [See another specimen on the next slide]
