Generate Electricity
Video• Generate Electricity
Different types
• Thermal power– Solar energy– Coal– Gas– Nuclear
• Hydroelectricity• Wind power
Electricity generating is very important, because most of the compliances in todays life work with electricity.
Without electricity, a lot of businesses and factories will stand still.
• Schools need electricity to switch on lights, to use the intercom, switch on fans, etc.
• At factories the machines will come to a stand still and processing will stop or slow down.
Coal generating
• Coal is mined• It goes to the factories• At the factories the coal is burned to get
steam, the steam goes through tunnels to turbines.
• Turbines turn and the coils of the generator turns that gives us electricity.
• From the generator it goes to step up transformers that increase the voltage.
• It goes through high voltage lines to sub stations.
• From the sub stations the voltage is decreased to go to our homes for us to use.
Coal generating
Transformer
• We get two kinds of transformers• Step up transformer and a step down
transformer.• Transformers can take a low voltage to a
higher voltage or the other way around depending on the number of coils.
Thermal power plant
Thermal generating
• STEAM is used to generate electricity.
• We get steam when we boil water with something.
• We can use coal, gasses, sun and nuclear energy
Hydroelectricity
• Electricity is generated by the use of water.
• Water turns the turbines if it flows past them. It is pumped back to the dam and used again.
Hydroelectricity
Wind generating
• We use the wind to generate electricity.
• The turbines is connected to big wings that turns when the wind blows.
Advantages and disadvantages
• All types of generating has advantages and disadvantages.
Thermal power
• Advantages– Fuel is quite cheap.– Can be built anywhere– Use less space than Hydro electrical plant– Less expensive than diesel powerplant
• Disadvantage– Pollution from the smoke of the fuel burning.– More expensive than Hydro Power plants
Hydroelectricity
• Advantages– Can be used over and over– Can be generated 24/7– Doesn’t cause pollution.
• Disadvantages– More expensive to build than thermal plants– Can cause floods and it is dangerous for nature.
Wind power
• Advantages– The wind is for free.– No pollution– Doesn’t take a lot of land space
• Disadvantages– Wind changes the whole time and doesn’t stay
consistant– Wind turbines makes a lot of noise.
