Geomet has been continuously evolvingsince the early ‘80s and is today a widelyused CMM Software productivity tool.Back then it was one CMM with onecomputer/software program. For a secondmachine you might have a differenthardware/software solution incompatiblewith the first. Before long you could have a collection of incompatible, discrete CMMs,in one plant or across multiple facilities.Neither programs nor operators wereinterchangeable. Geomet provides acommon, familiar and easy-to-use CMMsoftware system that unifies training,programming, the user interface, reporting

of results, support and upgrades across allCMMs, manual or DCC, of any manufacture,within an organization.

User Environment

Geomet is a user’s CMM software and is configurable by the user.The basic layout provides the key functional areas. As measurements areproduced, results are given as both text and CAD graphics. Size, position,attitude and projections are consistent with ANSI Y14.5M principles.Selections can be made from either text or graphics for subsequentevaluations. The user chooses to emphasize text or graphic output as wellas control colors and other visuals. System Status, prompts and helpful userinformation appear automatically when and where needed. To avoidconfusion, whatever is not relevant to the task at hand is not shown.

The System Status and Prompt areas are extremely useful. They tell theoperator clearly what to do next and indicate important conditions of themeasurement being executed, like the Part Coordinate System setup guide,Cartesian or Polar, active Stylus number and inch or millimeter units.

An endearing feature long favored by Geomet users, the keyboard key labelssupplement the well-organized Windows menus and provide direct one-buttonaccess to the most frequently used functions. As any regular user of softwareknows we gravitate toward “hot key” commands because this is the mostefficient method to direct software. Our Keystroke MagicTM is a Geomettrademark and it simplifies access to enormous measuring power. Icons arecolor coded into groups of related and distinct inspection operations and arealways present and always in the same location for all levels of software.Operators learn to use Geomet in much the same way one learns wordprocessing, knowing the system without looking, enabling fast executionunmatched by any other CMM Software.

Geomet supports touch trigger probes, scanning probes,hard probes, video probes, lasers and other sensors.The Electronic Touch Trigger Probe, the most commonlyused, is calibrated on a precision reference sphere.The system handles and calibrates any combination of fixedor indexible probes, with single tip or “star cluster” stylusconfigurations and probe and stylus changing. The statusBanner indicates at all times which stylus is being used.

Geomet simplifies probe setup and calibration. When anindexible probe is used in conjunction with a stylus rack,visual prompts guide you through the stylus and angleselections as well as through the qualification procedure.

A measured dimension is meaningless if itis not tied to a valid Part CoordinateSystem (PCS) as distinct from the MachineCoordinate System (MCS). One ofGeomet’s great strengths is its strongemphasis on the correct and efficientestablishment of a PCS.

Highly flexible tools allow easy establishmentof datum frames for parts in any position onthe machine. A Setup Guide insures that allPCS elements are properly completed.Up to 500 PCSs can be created and usedwith complete flexibility during an inspection.A graphic icon indicates the location andorientation of the active PCS for reference.

PCSs can be translated and rotated andfeatures are always projected correctly intoany PCS. The components of all PCSs (forexample, an origin, a datum axis or a datumplane) can be extracted for use in otherconstructions or PCSs. Coordinates can beCartesian or Polar.

The Intermediate Coordinate System (ICS)concept, unique to Geomet, facilitatesfinishing the remaining components of a PCSwith their previous values. For example, if amachine operator wants to quickly check abore for size he can set a part on the tableand with one command accept the machinecoordinates so the diameter measurementwill be correct.

Fixture Coordinate Systems (FCS) arehandy, timesaving tools in the repetitiveinspection of production parts measured infixtures. FCS speeds the PCS setup processand reduces cycle times. Unlimited FCSsenable you to check multiples or differentparts in a run.

Geomet also supports a rotary 4th axis,referred to as a Wobble Coordinate System(WCS) and it compensates for rotary runoutin the system (“wobble”). This featuremakes Geomet a perfect match for shaftmeasuring systems.

Feature Measurement and ConstructionGeomet measures all the classical geometricelements as well as vectors, and contoursections and surfaces, with a minimumnumber of keystrokes. The user defines thedefault number of hits for each type, yet thisremains flexible. Undesired or accidentalhits can be deleted. If the CMM is capableof automatic direction sensing, probingdirections and ID/OD type determinationsare also automatic. Every feature typeautomatically recycles until another functionis selected speeding measurement. Familiaraudio tones inform the user as hits areaccepted and features are completed.Features can also be created in CAD-like

fashion when needed as phantom orreference Geometry.

Constructions are measurements createdas combinations of 2 or more previouselements such as distances, angles, bisectors,intersections, bolt circles and so on.Subsequent constructions may be producedfrom combinations of measured, createdand constructed features. All features arereported for position, angular attitudeand size as appropriate. 2D and 3D formare available.

All features are automatically labeled or usernames can be applied. Geomet allows undoor erasing backwards, step-by-step, in caseerrors have been made. In the event ofpower loss, for example, the current taskcan be recovered even though unsavedor unfinished.

Scanning/Reverse EngineeringGeomet serves those who need todocument or model the unknownand send it to a CAD system.Several methods are available to

create CAD elements or digitize geometryand surfaces. At the simplest level, the CADentities produced in Geomet as a result of anymeasurement are exportable in IGES formator the stylus center points can be exported asASCII or DXF. With our GeoTracer featurecontour sections can be drag-digitized with ahard probe across the profile. Linear sectionsor regions defined by radial or 4 pointboundaries can be automatically digitized witha touch probe under DCC control and Cardinalsplines are supported. Random point cloudsand high-density laser scanned surface data canalso be gathered and exported as XYZ pointsin IGES, DXF or ASCII.

TolerancingGeomet provides tolerancing for anydesired feature during manualmeasurements or as entries in programs.For any dimension, the nominal value andthe related tolerances may be entered.The results will indicate this nominal andtolerance information and show deviationfrom nominal values along with deviationfrom tolerance with a proportional graphicwhen in tolerance or an actual value whenout of tolerance. This makes finding anyout-of-tolerance condition very easy.

Tolerance formats include Bilateral and TruePosition with support for RFS, MMC andLMC. Bonus tolerances are automaticallycalculated. All major GeometricDimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)evaluations are included. For CMMs used

on the production floor, Process ControlTolerances allow a user to put actions in playbefore dimensions approach the tolerancelimits. Three user settable thresholds canbe used to trigger preventive responses,e.g. (A) Caution - watch closely; (B) Checktool for wear; (C) Halt process to correct.Production quality is managed moreeffectively, and costly trouble is avoided.

MANUAL MODEGeomet is a true self-teach system. Partprograms are simply created when the firstpart is inspected. The file is saved and may beused to inspect the next part without furtherinput. When running a program the operatoris prompted to the next measured feature viaa highly visible command in the prompt areaand highlighting of that feature in the graphicalarea, since the part was “drawn” when firstinspected. It is that simple and extremely fast.

DCC MODEDCC programs are generated in the sameway, measuring the first part via joystick oreven by hand, if the drive system allows. Inthe process intermediate motion points(IPs) are added by pressing a button on thejoystick. These are “drive through” pointsthat guide the CMM to the features andaround the part and obstacles during aprogram run. This programming method isextremely fast and efficient and DCCprograms that take hours in other systemscan be produced in minutes with Geomet.

OFFLINEVery simple tools permit the creation ofmanual and DCC programs away from theCMM. The measurement sequence is madewith feature specific graphic windows inwhich parametric values for position,angular attitude and size are entered aswell as the number and distribution of hitsfor that feature. All probed points are

displayed graphically. For DCCprograms probe path for eachfeature is created automaticallyand motion between featuresis also handled automaticallyby the creation of “clearanceplanes” through which theprobe must travel. All othersteps are identical to on-lineprogramming.

EditingOne the most powerful and effective toolsin Geomet is the ability to select any featureand, with the right mouse button, call up anextensive pallet of editing, modifying andanalytical operations. A user can easilychange a 4 hit circle to 24 hits - includingall motion, then call for a graphic circularplot, change motion speeds or change thefeature from inch to millimeter or add orchange tolerance values all in less than aminute. It is equally as easy to mark specificdimensions for printing separately or storefor SPC. Features are easily deleted ornew features can be inserted in a matterof seconds.

OUTPUTGeomet results are displayed on the screenand at the user’s choice to a printer, file orSPC database. Geomet includes a choice of“flags” that can be attached to any individualmeasurement and includes a Print flag, SPCflag (saved to a text file) and a Geostat flag

for our own integrated Geomet SPC programoption. A Report Control Centersubsequently allows tailored output with orwithout any or all flags effective and printcommands can be attached to inspectionprograms. Output flexibility is key andreports can be organized in a compact

format or re-ordered for preferredpresentation. In addition, the CAD entities orprobed points produced within Geomet canbe exported in IGES, ASCII, or DXF formats.

Geomet is offered in three levels, each withadditional options. All levels use the sameapproach to measuring and have the same“look and feel”. You can easily advancefrom one to the other without retraining.The keyboard labels are common to alllevels. The higher levels and options justhave additional key-icons and pull downmenus. Each level can be expanded on-sitewith a unique access code. The entry levelis for manual use only. Existing programscan be used across all levels. Manualprograms can easily be converted intoDCC programs just by adding the motionpath to them.

Choicesin GEOMET

As more manufacturers recognize thebenefit of placing a CMM into theproduction process, Geomet has evolvedto embrace the special needs of thisprocess monitoring and controlling function.Our Fast Start Menu, coupled with theProcess Control Tolerancing featuredescribed above, simplify the basic inputand output functions for unskilledoperators. Geomet-in-Process alsoprovides an easy to setup and use I/Ocontrol panel. Users can specify actionsto specific inputs, such as barcode programselection, program initiation or fixturemis-load warning as well as specificoutputs to open a door, trigger a robotor halt a process.

GEOMET JUNIOR: SIMPLICITYGeomet Junior is the entry-level full 3Dsystem of the Geomet series, yet it ispacked with all the features needed forcompetent 3D measurement. It favors theone touch access to all basic Geometricelements in addition to a highly visible set oficons on the screen for intuitive measuringwithout extensive training. Automaticfeature recognition is included as is ourpowerful Part Coordinate System (PCS)creation. The Junior Plus option allowssimultaneous probe calibrations and storesPCSs for recall. Geomet 101 is the nextlevel when more analytical power is needed.

GEOMET 101:MORE POWERFULGeomet 101, our most popular softwarelevel, offers great flexibility for inspecting partsin the lab or on the production floor. Thegraphical area on the right hand side of thescreen generates a CAD representation ofthe measured features, serves as a visual guidefor part programs and as a link to CAD data.Programs are made in the self-teach mode orwith off-line programming tools and editing iseasy and efficient. Geomet 101 includesSurface Digitizing, GD&T Tolerancing andother high level functions, yet unskilled userscan still verify a dimension with a singlekeystroke. The GeoPlus option offersenhancements to 101 that expand the areasof feature measurement and analysis,constructions, reporting and other specialfunctions for yet increased power.

GEOMET 301: THE ULTIMATEGeomet 301, our most advanced system,offers the sophisticated user unbridledmeasuring power and the typical userfriendliness of Geomet. It contains all theabove-mentioned features plus a host ofother analytical tools to review andmanipulate your part inspections, e.g.profiling of circles, planes and cylinders and feature tagging for SPC software.

CAD BASED

With our highest software level, Geomet301 with GeoCAD, a 3D IGES model ofthe nominal part can be imported andthe coordinates of the actual part arethen aligned with the nominal model.All measurements proceed as normal, butVector Point measurements on any partsurface will derive xyz and ijk nominal valuesdirectly from the CAD database and reportdeviations of surface profile for each actualmeasured point.

This is the mostefficient methodfor measuringtarget gage points,contour sectionsand surfaces toprofile tolerancevalues. Surfacepoint clouds canalso be digitizedfor surface analysis.

GEOSTAT: REAL TIME SPCGeoStat is our optional SPC package thatintegrates with Geomet. It performs in realtime; results can be viewed instantly.It eliminates the creation and handling ofseparate database files outside the inspectionprogram. GeoStat delivers seven basiccontrol charts with filtering and sortingon dates, operators, fixtures and more.Data can be exported easily. Additionalproduction and efficiency tracking is offeredthrough the GeoTracker option.

The Geomet Coordinate Measuring Machine Software System retrofit will bring any manual or DCC CoordinateMeasuring Machine back to life.
