STOP PRESS - RECORDS BROKEN AT ATHLETICS CARNIVALCongratulations to Charlotte Maslen and Tayla Predebon who both broke long standing records at the Athletics carnival.
Charlotte broke the 15 years Girls Javelin record, throwing 25.30m. The old record of 23.85m was set by D Holstein back in 1985.
Tayla broke the 17+ years Girls Shot Put record, setting the new record at 10.09m The old record of 9.55m had stood since 1973 and was held by A Godfrey.
Well done girls!

PRINCIPAL’S REPORTThe mid-term marks the time of the examination period for most of our students. Students in Years 7-10 have been issued their examination timetable and have been reminded that a copy can be found on the school website.
It was pleasing to see parents, carers, family and friends of our students attend the Excellence Assembly on Thursday and join with us in acknowledging and celebrating their success through whole school commendations and teacher awards.
A reminder to families that the Department of Education’s Attendance Policy states that it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure:• Their children up to the age of 17 years are enrolled at and attend school each day the school is open• They provide an explanation for any absence and work in partnership with the school to discuss any issues impacting
on their child’s attendance or engagement.
It should also be noted that all absences need to be justified within 5 days. If the family is planning an extended holiday, a Certificate of Exemption needs to be issued by the school. Please contact me to discuss any extended holidays prior to booking to determine the length of time your child will be absent from school, the impact it may have on their learning and any strategies to support your child with work whilst they are absent.

Welcome to our first Excellence Assembly for 2017 and thank you to all the families and friends of our students who are here to join us in celebrating and acknowledging the effort, commitment and achievement of our students at GHS and tointroduce you to our Year 7 SRC students.
Together with the staff I am very proud of the success our students achieve. In the last 6 years I have been involved with a number of high schools within our broader region, in a variety of administrative roles. I can honestly say that the overwhelming majority of our students have created a school community environment built on respect for each other, staff and visitors, care for one another and the environment, advocate for those who need additional support and embrace many opportunities that are available to them.
So what else makes GHS the best? We don’t have modern buildings surrounded by landscaped gardens and fields. But what we do have are parents, carers and friends who value education and support their child to achieve their personal best. We have teaching and non-teaching staff who love working here, who protect and care for the students (your children), are continually investing their own time to improve their teaching practice to provide the foundations for student success and staff who volunteer their time for extra curricular activities.
Today you will be introduced to students who have excelled across the curriculum with whole school commendations and teacher awards.
Before we do this I would like to let you know of the success some of our students have had beyond the classroom.
Brianna Martin has had her paintings exhibited in England with one being chosen for the cover of a book and others to be used on merchandise and stamps.

Charlotte Maslen and Amy Shultz excelled in NSW State Campdrafting and Team Penning Championships as well as the Royal Easter Show.
Students have achieved wonderful results from the Taree Eisteddfod in music and drama. This is as good a time as any to promote the upcoming GHS production: Into the Woods which starts on Tuesday 20 June until Saturday 24 June. You are welcome to purchase tickets from the office.
In music Liam Chester has progressed to the next stage in the Talent Development Project in Sydney; Zeke Llewellyn has been accepted in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra workshop and the State Music Camp; Nina Samson is going to tour Iceland and the Baltic States with the Gondwanna Voices in July and Grace Forrester has attended a vocal camp in Sydney.
In art, Molly Danton has been successful in being accepted into the National Art School Intensive Studio Practice Program and Natasha Murray, Shaelie Hamson and Jasmine Keen have received round 2 certificates in the Write 4 Fun Competition for short stories and poems.
Three of our students are representing the Hunter Region in squash – Nathan Bird in the open boys team, Ethan Bird in the under 15 boys and Tanai O’Brien in the under 15 girls team.
Teachers have given their time to support students in many knockout competitions such as mock trial ,chess , boys and girls soccer, netball, football, cricket and basket ball. And the list goes on…..
Once again thank you to our families and friends for supporting your child at school and thank you to the staff for your dedication in providing additional opportunities and nurturing them to success.

VOCAL PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP Students from Gloucester High have participated in a Vocal Workshop run by Di Hall and Rob McDougall from the Arts Unit. They have been in a "breathing Gym" and have all presented a song for critical analysis as part of the program.
This was a great opportunity for our students to get information and tutoring from such experienced musicians. The students all had the chance to sing for the group and then to have their performances analysed by the tutors and their peers.
Thanks to Rob and Di for coming, it has been a great experience for us.

NATHAN HINDMARSH (EX -RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYER) VISITS OUR SCHOOL Nathan delivered an inspirational talk to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students about his career as an elite athlete in rugby league on Wednesday 17 May in the school hall.

WINGHAM BEEF WEEK 201720 students from Gloucester High participated in Wingham Beef Week’s events with approximately 380 students from across the state. Wingham Beef Week has been running for 30 years.
This is a great opportunity for our Agriculture and Primary Industry students to learn about the beef industry.
The students return today, Friday, and we look forward to their report in the next newsletter.
MATHSPACEExams are coming up in the next few weeks and this is a great oppoutunity for students to use Mathspace.Mathspace is an adaptive maths program that provides students with instant feedback. YEAR 11 SUBJECT SELECTION 2018 - INFORMATION NIGHTFOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS OF YEAR 10A parent information evening will be held on Wednesday 14 June in the school library, commencing at 6.30pm to explain course structures and the selection process for Year 11 subject selections in 2018. The evening will have speakers who will talk about HSC requirements, ATAR requirements, Board Developed, Board Endorsed and Content Endorsed Courses, Vocational Education Training Courses and TAFE Courses.
Subject selection booklets will be sent home prior to the evening with the students for your information and perusal.
Representatives from each of the Faculties within the school will also be available to discuss the courses they offer andanswer any questions you may have about the HSC and other courses.
It is critical that all Year 10 students and their parents attend this meeting. Subject preferences to be returned by 22 June.

What are your first impressions of the play? I think that it is going to be a great show for both the audience and the performers.
What do you think will be the challenges in staging the show? I believe getting all the right costumes with be one of the biggest challenges.
What are you looking forward to most? Performance week, of course!
How are rehearsals going? I reckon rehearsals are going pretty good.

What are your first impressions of the play? I thought it was going to be quite a challenging production to put together, and whilst it’s certainly not the easiest musical we’ve done, the experience while putting it all together is always the most enjoyable part, as well as the buzz you get while performing it.
What are you looking forward to most: I am looking forward to being able to perform in front of an audience and hearing the massive applause at the end of each show.
How are rehearsals going? Rehearsals are going really well, everyone is looking and sounding great on stage, and it’s coming together really nicely.

THANK YOU TO STRATFORD COAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT PROGRAMGloucester High School P & C Association received news of their successful application for financial assistance to the value of $2500.00. The application was for a cemented area at the agriculture farm which can be used as a washbay area for the cattle. The P & C hopes to commence this project soon.
Stratford Coal is commited to supporting and contributing to the local community and has been providing support to local community based organisations since 1994. Through their current Community Support Program, which commenced in 2010, Stratford Coal has contributed more than $450,000.00 towards a range of community based initiatives associated with education, health, environment, infrastructure, arts, leisure and cultural heritage.

CHESS COMPETITIONOn Friday 12 May Gloucester High School students competed in the second round of the Chess Competition. Gloucester High School travelled to Wingham High School to compete in the second round of the Chess Competition. Four student representatives from Gloucester High took part. Shayne Harris, Gabe Hennessy-O’Reilly, Ryan Pilmore and Jacob Bird faced off against three Year 11 students and one Year 8 student from Wingham. Shanye, Gabe, and Jacob all won their chess games and played brilliantly. Ryan, however, was unfortunate in his very tight match but in the end lost by one move. The team has progressed into the next round and are looking forward to sharpening their skills for the next competition.
ROTARY AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND STUDENT EXCHANGE2018 PROGRAM - EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST OPENThis program is designed for 14-15 year old students to experience a true ‘exchange’ with a family in New Zealand. Localstudents are matched with a New Zealand student and the Austrailan student will travel to New Zealand and meet their match and attend the New Zealand school with their match during Term 2, 2018. Students then travel to Australia and attend Term 3, 2018 here.
This is an exciting way to experience another culture with the support of Rotary.

CAREERS NEWSSingleton HSC SeminarYear 12 students are invited and strongly encouraged to attend the Singleton HSC Seminar Day on Friday 26 May. Students will be able to attend seminars covering more than 30 HSC courses, which will focus on preparation for the HSC exams later in the year. The seminars will be held in thirteen venues in Singleton from 9.50am to 5pm. The cost for the day is now $50 (including transport). GHS has subsidised the event $28 per pupil to encourage more students to attend and promote the importance of the day. Students need to return permission notes to the front office ASAP!
Feedback from GHS students who’ve attended in previous years has been extremely positive. Although it will be a long day, it’s a valuable experience for students who are focused on achieving good outcomes and improving their ATAR. The seminars have resulted from the great efforts of Singleton High School Staff and Student Representative Council; support from the NSW Department of Education; the Singleton Community and both local and regional business sponsorship.
The Singleton Educational Community has hosted the Seminar Day for over 16 years. Last year was highly successful with over 1000 students benefiting from the expert knowledge and advice given to them on the day.
Newcastle University Open Day Thursday 29 June (Last week of this term)Year 11 and 12 students are invited to attend Newcastle University. This is a great opportunity to taste university life through campus tours and presentations. Students will have the chance to chat with academic staff and explore their study options at the University of Newcastle. Students are able to register their attendance, access the online program and plan their day. Michael De Angelis will transport students to Newcastle University on the Gloucester High Bus. There are only 24 positions available. Students should also provide their own lunch or money to purchase morning tea and lunch. Notes will be issued in Week 6. Invitation for Year 12 students to attend RSA and RCG Courses. 2015 and 2016 GHS graduates are also invited to attend.RSA and RCG Courses will be delivered at the Gloucester Soldiers Club (downstairs) on Tuesday 4 July and Wednesday 5 July from 9.00am to approximately 3.30pm (1st week of Winter Break).Cost: RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) - $140.00RCG - (Responsible Conduct of Gambling) $100.00
These are NOT Gloucester High School supervised events. The courses are being administered by North Coast TAFE and supervised by John Kell (0418927412). To assist TAFE and students in the organisation of these events we are collecting fees for the events at Gloucester High School and will transfer the money to North Coast TAFE prior to the events. 50% non-refundable deposits are due to the GHS Front Office by: Friday 16 JuneFull payments are due to the front office by: Monday 26 June
Completion of the RSA course allows students, of at least 18 years of age, to legally serve alcohol. This qualification is a mandatory requirement to work in the liquor industry. Completion of the RCG course allows students, of at least 18 years of age, to legally work and serve customers in the gaming industry. Both qualifications are valid for 5 years. Because these courses are being administered during the school break, a Gloucester High staff member will not be present. Students will only be supervised by a qualified TAFE instructor. Lateness is not acceptable and may lead to a non-completion of the courses. Students must organise their own lunch and recess.
