Our parents consider their marriage as a

very important milestone in their relationship.Their marriage marked their love for each

other. God wanted from the very beginning to

make marriage part of our lives.

GOD and

MARRIAGEIN

THE

BEGINNING

God created human

beings to love andbe loved. He created

the first human

beings, male andfemale, different but

equal and He found

it very good.(Genesis 1:27)

God to first woman: be fertile and

multiply.

In this way, God blessed the first manand woman to have children and to

share in His plan for creating the human

family.

The book of Genesis tells us that God is the

author of marriage. Human beings as theimage of God who Himself is Love, is

created out of love and called to love.

God created man and

woman are partners foreach other, the woman

who is bone of his

bones, and flesh of his

flesh. As in Genesis2:24, That is why a

man leaves his father

and mother and clingsto his wife and the two

of them become one

body.

However, the two

cannot immediatelybecome one after the

wedding. The two have

to work for their unity.They may be doing it

until the last breath of

their lives.

When Jesus came, He elevated the

love of a man and a woman for eachother in the level of a sacrament. He

said, so they are no longer two but

one flesh. Therefore, what God hasjoined together, no human being must

separate. (Matthew 19:6)

Sometimes, husbands and

wives struggle in theirmarriage. How do we deal

with this?

Jesus furthermore showed the importance

of a marriage by attending the WeddingFeast at Cana (John 2:1ff)

Since the time marriage has been an

effective sign of Jesus love andpresence. Jesus love therefore is

made concretely present in the love of

a husband and wife. This is what theChurch celebrates in the Sacrament

of Matrimony.

Matrimony is the sacrament in

which a man and a womanbecome husband and wife and

promise to be faithful to eachother for the rest of their lives.

Marriage is a serious step to take. It

should not be done on the spur of themoment or as a solution to a problem.

It is a decision that should come after

a long a serious reflection.

We should put God at the center of

our married and family life. Love, afterall, is not so much looking at each

other but looking at the same

direction together and sharing thesame horizon. And God should be in

that horizon.
