RationaleTherearemanyareasinbiology,biochemistryandchemistrywheremixturesneedtobeseparated.Thescientistmightneedtoseparateonetypeofantibodyfrommanyothers,separatepiecesofDNAfromanotherbysize&charge,orneedtopurifyaproteinforlateruse.Theselaboratorytechniquesrelyontheseparationofmixturesbasedontheirphysicaland/orchemicalproperties,aconcepttaughtinGrade9Science.Later,inGrade11and/orGrade12Biology,theconceptcomesupagainingelelectrophoresis.Theseconceptsarere-visitedandexpandeduponinuniversitychemistrycourses,suchasanalyticalchemistry.Theseanalyticaltechniquesarewidelyusedinindustry.

BackgroundInformationTheWakarchuklabatRyersonUniversity(undertheumbrellaofGlycoNet)isacarbohydrateresearchlabthatusesenzymesfortherapeuticpurposes.Thesepurposesinclude:

• Theuseofenzymestoaddsugarstoproteindrugstomakethesedrugslastlonger(persist)inthebloodstream,therebyreducingdosage,sideeffectsandcost

• Addingsugarmoleculestoculturedneuronalcellsurfacesusingenzymes,sothatthesemodifiedneuronswillfindtheirwaytowheretheyareneededwhengiventoParkinson’spatients

• Researchinghowtomaketheseproteinsusingbacteria(ratherthanmaintainingexpensivemammaliancelllines)
