• What is being archived?– Digitisation is often project-based (externally funded)– Yes: Academic papers, Student theses– No: scientific data
• Technology issues – having to redo work due to new technologies.– smaller libraries: availability of technology
• eBooks on demand (for out of copyright texts) – take-up is an issue– who pays – student?

Open Access• Need to make it very easy to add content• Reasons for not depositing material:
– Time to deposit material – Creating metadata
• Who should be responsible for the work? • Where should the work be done?
• Unique Author identifier • Download statistics might be useful• Flexibility needed with what/how research is made available• Role of an overall Research Information System – a researcher fills out
metadata only once. • e.g. for theses – making records creation as part of the research process.
• Recognition / impact factor / ranking system is important – it will take a long period for open access to gain the same level of recognition as other journals.
• Alternatives – Mesur Project in US measures actual usage
