World Water Day was celebrated on 22nd March with the theme of“Water & Sustainable development”. Shri O.T.Gulati, Chairman,Water Management Forum, IEI delivered keynote address. Excerptsfrom his address:Water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical forsocio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and for humansurvival itself. It is vital for reducing the burden of disease andimproving the health, welfare and productivity of population. It iscentral to the production and preservation of a host of benefits andservices for people. Water is also at the heart of adaptation toclimate change, serving as the crucial link between the climatesystem, human society and the environment.Water is a finite and irreplaceable resource that is fundamental tohuman well-being. It is only renewable if well managed. Today, morethan 1.7 billion people live in river basins where depletion throughuse exceeds natural recharge, a trend that will see two-thirds of theworld’s population living in water-stressed countries by 2025. Watercan pose a serious challenge to sustainable development butmanaged efficiently and equitably, water can play a key enablingrole in strengthening the resilience of social, economic andenvironmental systems in the light of rapid and unpredictablechanges.Sustainable development was explicitly popularized andcontextualized by the BrundtlandCommission as “development

that meets the needs of the present without compromising theability of future generations to meet their own needs.” TheBrundtland Commission focused on three pillars of human wellbeing: economic, socio-political and ecological/environmentalconditions. The basic concept endorses putting in place strongmeasures to spur economic and social development, particularlyfor people in developing countries, while ensuring thatenvironmental integrity is sustained for future generations.Agriculture is by far the thirstiest consumer of water globally, accounting for 88 % of water withdrawals in our country.Rainfed agriculture is the predominant agricultural productionsystem, and its current productivity is, on average, little morethan half the potential obtainable under optimal agriculturalmanagement. By 2050, world agriculture will need to produce60% more food globally, and 100% more in developingcountries. To achieve this modern irrigation techniques like useof drip and sprinkler and Participatory approach to irrigationmanagement has become crucial.Balancing the requirements ofsustainability against the conventional view of industrial massproduction creates a number of conundrums for industry. One ofthe biggest is globalization and how to spread the benefits ofindustrialization worldwide and without unsustainable impactson water and other natural resources.Shri V.B.Patel Chairman, DSC also stressed the need foradopting drip, sprinkler & PIM for sustainable development.Shri C.V.Nadpara Hon Secretary proposed vote of thanks.
