Pondering the pastRecently Vonn and I

celebrated 50 years of marriage and at times like that it encourages one to

look back and ponder.Also I have nearly completed 28 years in Real Estate - all with Hastings McLeod Property Brokers. So I thought I would take a look back and see if things have changed for the better or the worst.

On our wedding day on March 5th 1966 the local and national communities were somewhat different to what we see today.

• The population was about 2.7 million

• Keith Holyoake was Prime Minister.

• Norman Kirk was Leader of the Opposition

• Vern Cracknell was the leader of the Social Credit Party

• A singer with the name of Maria Dallas won the “Loxene Golden Disc Award

• “Country Calender” first appeared on TV and we had never heard of Waitangi Day

I am sure there are a number of

readers who have never heard of some of these things.

So are things better now or worse than then?

I suppose it depends upon your point of view. Communications were a lot slower, but there was far less bureaucracy. The public had far better access to our community officials. Decisions were made easier and quicker and action could be taken without a raft of consultants and so called “experts”.

Twenty two years later, having unfortunately succumbed to the

very challenging farming conditions at the time (very similar to what we see today) we came to town and I started selling Rural properties for Hastings McLeod and here I still am. When I started in Real Estate exclusive agencies were just coming into vogue. Prior to that properties were usually listed with all the agencies and there was a very laid back attitude to marketing and sales.

In 1988 the law required one qualified person in the office for every 3 sales people. A “QP” was someone who had at least three years’ experience in real estate and had gained qualifications in Contract

Law, Trust Law and Management.

Today and particularly since the new Real Estate Agents Authority came into being, all sales people have to be qualified in these matters and all sales people are required to fulfil a minimum of ten hours of verifiable training every year and also ten hours of non-verifiable training.

The many hours of phone work that was done every evening is a thing of the past as modern phones and the internet have revolutionised daily practice. More of that some other time.

Let me recount this story and you can draw your own conclusions. With apologies to our excellent Councillors.

THE PLANIn the beginning was the Plan and

then came the assumptions.

And the assumptions were without form and the Plan was without substance and darkness was cast over the faces of the people.

Then the people spake amongst themselves saying “Verily it is a bag

of manure and it stinketh”

So the people went amongst their Councillors and said “This is a pile of dung and none can abide the odour thereof”

So the Councillors went to their Council Managers saying “It is a container of excrement and is very strong so that none may abide by it”

The Managers went unto their Service Directors and spake unto them thus “It is a vessel of Fertiliser and none may abide its strength”

And the Directors of Services spake amongst themselves saying

one unto the other “It contains that which aids plant growth and is very strong.

And the Directors of Services went unto the Committee Chairmen saying unto them “It promotes growth and is very powerful”

And the Committee Chairman went unto the Mayor and said to him “This new Plan will actively promote growth and vigour in the District with mighty effect”

And the Mayor looked upon the Plan and saw that it was good.

And the Plan became Policy.

in your garden you’d like to blanket with colour,

then nemesia is the plant for you

It is a lovely small bedding plant that can be used for edging, in borders and as a ground cover and, in the right conditions, will produce so many flowers it’s hard to see the greenery.

Growing to a height of around 20cm, it’s also lovely grown in pots, hanging planters or any other suitable growing container.
