A. Program Profile

The first gunsmithing courses were designed and offered at TSJC in 1947 by P.O. Ackley. Since that time the program has developed into a two year Gunsmithing Degree Program that is designed to train individuals with the basic concepts and skills needed by the professional gunsmith. Course work at the basic and advanced level includes: bench metal, machining operations, gun repair and stockmaking. A wide variety of specialized courses such as checkering, revolversmithing, competitive rifles, shotgunsmithing and pistolsmithing are also offered.

Program Mission Statement and Learning Outcomes

Our Mission: To prepare our students for employment as a gunsmith, providing them with a broad based educational experience, which includes a balanced curriculum and practical hands on education in the use of gunsmithing hand tools, gunsmithing machine tools, firearms repair, stockmaking, and customizing

firearms.

Program Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate proficiency in gunsmithing bench skills including hand tools, metallurgy, tool design,

part manufacturing and fitting, soldering, and custom work. 2. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of machine tools including barrel fitting, part manufacturing,

tools and fixtures, and customization of firearms. 3. Demonstrate proficiency in basic gunstock making skills including gunstock design, gunstock

furniture, inletting, shaping and stock finishing. 4. Demonstrate proficiency in firearms repair including firearms operation, troubleshooting,

disassembly and reassembly, parts fitting, and firearms maintenance. 5. Demonstrate workplace skills, including interpersonal skills, resumes, and portfolios.

Program Advisory Committee The Gunsmithing Department Advisory Committee meets semi-annually. One meeting is held on the TSJC Campus during the Fall Semester. The other meeting is held at the national SHOT Show, which is generally held in mid-January. The Committee is advisory in nature with members from various aspects of the firearms industry. D. Review and Status of Previous Review This is the first review we have done under the current TSJC Assessment Plan and as such provides baseline data for future review.

Section 2: Admissions and Marketing

Historically admission to the Gunsmithing Department was on a first come, first served basis, with the only pre-requisite being the ability to legally possess firearms. Starting with the spring 2013 semester, we implemented a screening process designed to select those candidates who are best prepared for success. For the spring 2013 semester we screened 54 applicants for 17 class openings.

Admissions Screening Process

Students seeking admission into the Gunsmithing School will complete the following requirements:

1. Apply for admission and be accepted into Trinidad State Junior College.

2. Submit Driver’s License, official high school transcripts, Immunization records and Birth Certificate

3. Submit ACT/SAT or Accuplacer Scores ACT

a. Reading:

i. <16 remediation and test required prior to admission

ii. 17 concurrent enrollment and success in REA090 required

iii. >17 no Reading course required for admission

b. Writing:

i. <15 remediation required must prior to admission

ii. 16 concurrent enrollment and success in ENG090 required

iii. >16 no English Course required for admission

c. Math:


ii. 18 concurrent enrollment and success in MAT 0060 A or B prior to admission

iii. >18 no Math Course required for admission

Students who have met the testing requirements and have been accepted to Trinidad State Junior College will receive an acceptance letter from TSJC.

4. Prospective students shall submit a letter of application for admission into the Gunsmithing School. The letter should be a maximum of typed 1,000 words, double spaced in Time New Roman font and size 12. This letter will be used in the review process by the admission committee for the selection of students for admission. The letter should include the items listed in the Gunsmithing School application.

5. Submit three Letters of Recommendation.

Marketing Marketing efforts have been primarily focused on four industry trade shows: SHOT Show NRA Show ACGM Guild/Dallas SCI Show Brownell’s Gunsmith Career Fair We also market our program via the TSJC website, NRA affiliated schools website, email distributions, and mailings such as the 60th Anniversary issue of the Special Forces magazine.

B. Assessment Plan and Outcomes Assessment

Program level outcomes for both the Gunsmithing AAS Degree and Gunsmithing Certificate programs are

assessed in each of the core courses. In addition we administer our Program Pre/Post-Test in GUS 100

Orientation and Firearms Safety and GUS 265 Comprehensive Skills Evaluation. Over the past twenty-five

semesters our average pre-test scores are 8% on Occupational content and 5% on Academic content. For

the same twenty-five semester period our average post-test scores are 70% on Occupational content and

61% on the Academic content.

C. Efforts to Stay Current in Curriculum In the spring of 2008 and again in the spring of 2011, the Gunsmithing Department Faculty, with the aid of the Gunsmithing Department Advisory Committee, conducted an industry skills survey and curriculum review to insure that our curriculum was up to date and consistent with industry needs.

Educational support is provided to the Gunsmithing Department and students by a variety of campus services and activities including: Tutoring Services, Student Success Center, Learning Center, Writing Center, Bookstore, Financial Aid, Work Study Employment, TSJC Educational Foundation, TSJC Prator Shooting Range, IT Support Services, TSJC Freudenthal Library, Career and Technical Education (CTE) Advising, TSJC CTE Recruitment Office, TSJC Student Services Office.

Section 4: Budgeting and Program Costs

The Gunsmithing program has received grant funding from Perkins for the purchase of engravers, mills, lathes,

machine repairs, and professional development. The NRA Gunsmithing account from the summer course

offerings have provided funding to build the Fine Arts classroom for classes such as engraving and scrimshaw.

The Gunsmithing program account budgets for instructional materials and supplies needed.
