WELCOME! To The Eleventh Season
Producer Guy S. Littla, Jr. With the opening on ~a~ 20th of Barefoot
I n The Park s tamng Tab Hunter, Producer Guy S. Little. Jr. i s proud to begln his secold decade of live theatre for central I l l lno~s audiences. Long before Mr. Little opened the Grand Theatre back in 1957, he hoped and planned that someday he would have a theatre where musicals and plays could be presented. He got his first job in professional theatre as an apprentice at the Keene, New Hampsh~re Summer Theatre in 1951 and worked the fwo following summers a t the Gateway Mus~cal Playhouse near Atlantic C l t ~
After graduation from the ~ n i v e r s i i y of Mi- ami Mr. Little took graduate courses a t Colum- b i a ' u n i v e r ~ i t ~ and The America? Theatre Wing before returning to central Illlnors In the spring of 1957 to look for a theatre location.
Not having success locating a suitable theatre in any of the larger cities in downstate Illinois, Mr. Little decided to lease the movie house In his native Sullivan. Since the opening of Brigadoon on July 3, 1957, Mr. Little has pre- sented 100 major productionbboth plays and musicals--featuring many outstandin stars and supporting casts from Broadway, ~olfywood, T V and Opera. The first season ran nine weeks and had an attendance of 8,000. The Little Theatre- On The Square was open for twenty-five week8 last year and had an attendance of .80s000 . . . a most gratifyin[ increase! In addit~on to his productions in ullivan, Mr. Little managed the Piccolo Playhouse in Joliet and has had touring productions that have played theatres in Michigan, Ohio and the Chicago area. Mr. Little i s often asked to open aqd manage other theatres in the midwest, but h ~ s devot~on i s to The Little Theatre-On The Square and i t s loyal audiences. Mr. Little works year around booking outstandin stars such as June Allyson John Carradine. %eter Palmer, Rose- mary P ~ Z , Dennis Weaver, Robert Reed, John Payne, Margaret O'Brien. Julia Mesde, Pat O'Brien Linda Darnell, Marie Wilson. Eddie Bracken: Joe E. Brown, Marjorie Lord, Margar- e t Truman. Edward Everett Horton, Annamary Dickey, Jack Haskell, Margaret Hamilton and Cesar Rqmero.
Mr. Little has directed many of the pro- ductions, designed and built the acenery, and has appeared in many of the shows. Last season, in add~tion to supemising all the productions, he ap eared as Mr. Snow in Carousel. Joe Tay- lor fr. in Allegro, Mr. Foley in Never Too ~ a i e and Michael O'Neill in The Mmn Is Blue.
Guy met his wife, Jerili. when they were both studying theatre at the University of Mi- ami. They have been married thirteen years and have .two children. Vanessa. ane eleven. and Sean, a c five. Both children h&e been active in the fullivan productions.
The operation of a star theatre for ten years in a town with a population of less than 4,000 has been called "the miracle of Sullivan" by theatre-historians. Guy S. Little. Jr. gratefully salutes the faithful central Illinois audiences who have patronized The Little Theatre-On The Square since 1957.
