2ND ANNUAL KIDS TRY-ATHALONSafety & Wellness

CornerBack-to-School It’s that time of year again! Kids are heading back to school, which means cold season is on its way. Here are some tips to help prevent colds for you and your family this school year.

Build Immunity Make sure you and your kids get enough sleep and exercise, avoid stress and second hand smoke, along with incorporating a healthy diet. For example, yogurt contains “active cultures” which can help prevent colds. Vitamin D is another key to building immunity, so make sure to soak up some sun! Frequently Washing HandsWe all know the importance of washing our hands, but washing hands after every cough, sneeze or wiping of the nose is important. If soap and water are unavailable, alcohol wipes or hand sanitizer should be used.

Cover Nose and MouthUse a tissue or the crook of your elbow when coughing or sneezing to keep the spread of germs to a minimum.

Teach Your Kids About GermsWhile sharing is a good life rule, sharing germs is not. Telling your kids the importance of not sharing food, drinks, lip balm, make-up, pencils, pens or other items placed close to eyes, nose or mouth is important to preventing colds or more serious illnesses.

Keep Immunizations CurrentAdults catch a cold two to four times a year on average. Kids average six to eight colds a year according to the American Lung Association. Colds are more common in the fall and winter as kids return to school and when children are indoors more often than outside. By keeping up to date with immunizations can help you and your kids fight colds that come your way.

KUDOS TO YOU!

Congratulations Stacie Sanborn, Home Care RN, for passing her OASIS Certificate exam! The Certificate for OASIS Specialist-Clinical (COS-C) exam is the only nationally standardized, psychometrically validated test that evaluates a clinician’s knowledge of CMS’ OASIS guidelines. Congrats on this achievement Stacie! Senior Management wants to thank the EAT Committee for generously donating the proceeds of their book sale/raffle to the Helping Hands Fund. The amount they donated was $848! The Helping Hands fund is administered through MKS Performance Solutions (our EAP Program) and provides HHHC employees up to $200/year for an emergent need (i.e., car repair, fuel bill) and the request/transaction will remain confidential, even to the HR department. We have already funded one request so far. Employees can donate cash or check any time - See Bess Parks or weekend receptionist if you would like to help replenish the fund. Please be aware that your contribution will not be designated as a charitable donation and posted on the W-2. Additionally, HHHC is piloting this program for one year. Please see HR if you have any questions.
