Welcome to Hatherop Castle School where we are proud of
our difference and uniqueness. Like the trees that grow in our
grounds, our pupils arrive as little saplings, they are nurtured
and nourished so they grow strong and tall. One of the most
fascinating of our trees is the Ginko. Its leaves are unique in
shape and its delicate structure belies a hidden strength.
Each year the trees lose their leaves just as our pupils are
dispersed to a number of senior schools; the tree grows stronger
and continues to yield fruit year after year. In an environment
where outdoor learning, the performing and visual arts and sport
all combine with outstanding academics to produce excellent
well-rounded pupils, everyone flourishes.

The warm, caring atmosphere generated
by the boarding house, the wide variety of
activities that cross year groups, age ranges
and boys and girls, the strong friendships
that exist among the pupils at the school are
all a vital part of their education. So strong
are the friendships forged at Hatherop
Castle that they last a lifetime, as witnessed
by former pupils who return to the school at
events such as Founder’s Day.

Hatherop Castle is set in the heart of the Cotswolds, in a truly rural setting that brings with
it the sense of peace and security that you would expect. The school environment, however,
adds up to more than this and there is, to quote one ISI Inspector, ‘a very real spirit of place’
upon which many visitors have commented. In this beautiful setting a lot is gained by the
children just from being outside where responsibility for the environment is generated in all
age groups and everyone is inspired.

That every child has the right to be cared for is unarguable. Hatherop Castle prides
itself on its ‘outstanding’ level of pastoral care, as commented on in our most
recent inspection reports. It is because the children feel safe and secure that their
talents, confidence and self esteem can be nurtured and developed fully.

Although valuing the individual and seeking to unlock each child’s potential, it is the
sense of teamwork that is one of the school’s defining characteristics. Whether in
the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage or in a host of other settings, the
importance of working together towards a common goal is at the heart of Hatherop
Castle School. Everyone shares and celebrates the success of each other.
