summer is around the corner!
The Adelaide branch held its
premiere event for the year,
the annual dinner, on 31 July.
The event was hosted at the
Adelaide Pavilion in the Veale
Gardens of the southern
parklands. The evening kicked
off with canapés, drinks, and an opportunity to catch
up with old friends and meet new ones. After a very
pleasant start to the evening, the guests were seated
and numbers of awards were presented while dinner
was being prepared. The awards included the AusIMM
Branch-Playford Trust Memorial Scholarships for 2015,
the Education Endowment Fund Premium
Scholarships, the AusIMM Adelaide Women’s Auxiliary
Book Prize, and a number of AusIMM long-service
certificates.
Congratulations to all the awardees and particular
thanks and congratulations to Ian Gould, Paul Dowd
and Serge Caplygin, who were awarded their 50-year
long service certificates.
A most entertaining and very interesting presentation
by Professor Chris Daniels of the University of South
Australia followed dinner. There were numerous
compliments to Chris after the presentation, and I
sincerely hope we can look forward to presenters of
similar calibre at future events.
After the presentation by Chris, there was ample time
for further socialising, while enjoying drinks, cheese
platters, tea, coffee, and chocolates. Well done and
thank you to the Committee members who worked
hard to ensure a very successful and enjoyable annual
dinner!
The August technical lunchtime presentation was by
Chris Kelsey, technical director of IMPTEC. Chris’
presentation dealt with a recent innovation in crushing
technology. In addition to the technical excellence of
the innovation, it is particularly noteworthy that the
innovation was facilitated by the South Australian
Government’s Mining Industry Participation Office
(MIPO). Lachlan Crowe, who manages this program,
gave a brief overview before Chris’ talk.
The AusIMM New Professionals Network (NPN) held
their networking and fundraising event at the Adelaide
Museum in August. The focus of the event was to
create awareness of mental health and the event was
very well supported. The highlight of the evening was
an account by Colin Kavooris, who has first-hand
experience of overcoming the challenges associated
with mental health. All proceeds for the evening went
to Beyond Blue. Congratulations to Robyn Teet and
the NPN committee for hosting a great event!
We still have a full technical program ahead for the
remainder of the year, including a number of technical

lunchtime talks, the GD Delprat Distinguished Lecture,
the Essington Lewis Memorial Lecture, and the Annual
General Meeting (including a visit form AusIMM
President, Rex Berthelsen). Please check the AusIMM
website for details and I hope to see you at the events.
Until next time, kind regards,

Branch Annual Dinner
The Branch Annual Dinner was held on Friday 31 July
at the Adelaide Pavilion in the beautiful setting of the
Veale Gardens. A good crowd of 82 members and
guests braved the wintry conditions to enjoy the key
social event on our calendar. All grumblings of doom
and gloom in our industry were sensibly left at the door
as the party geared up inside.
The event was again well supported by University of
Adelaide students including a number who were
presented with awards. Ashleigh Walsh (Min Eng) and
Lachlan Mackenzie (Chem Eng – Min Proc) were this
year’s well-deserved recipients of the Adelaide Branch
Auxiliary annual prizes. The winners of the 2015 joint
AusIMM Adelaide Branch / Playford Memorial Trust
Scholarships were also formally acknowledged; Viv
Naidu (Min Eng), Danielle White (Chem Eng – Min
Proc) and Eddy Sabre (Geo/Min Eng).

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the
presentation by guest speaker Professor Chris
Daniels. Chris is well known to many through his
deliveries on urban ecology and environmental history
through local radio and events. His polished
presentation on the River Torrens was both informative
and entertaining and was particularly well received by
the audience.

August Technical Meeting
The August Technical Meeting on 20 August drew a
very enthusiastic audience of 45, comprising
Members, Guests and Students at the Historian, with
many questions generated at the conclusion of the
talk.
Mark Drechsler, Chris Kelsey, Lachlan Crowe, David Pollard and
Janine Herzig at the August Technical Lunch
Our main speaker was Chris Kelsey from IMPTEC but
ahead of Chris we also had Lachlan Crowe, the
Manager of the Mining Industry Participation Office,
talking briefly about the initiatives and potential
opportunities within the Industry and Innovation
Division of the DSD - Department of State
Development. It was interesting to note that METS
(Mining equipment, technology and services) employ
as many people as the resource sector does directly
and is a major contributor to GDP.
Lachlan talked about the keys to growth being driven
by having the commercial capability to connect and
build relationships and to drive value and productivity
by providing innovative solutions. The Centre of
Excellence in his office focuses on facilitating
collaboration on innovation projects for export markets
and a good example of this was the support they
provided to IMPTEC for the grinding innovation which
was the subject of the main presentation.
Our main speaker Chris Kelsey (FAusIMM) has had an
incredibly varied and interesting career, working as a
fitter and turner, a design engineer with Chrysler, in the
Navy and as Manager Milling for CRA Bougainville
Copper where he was Senior Engineer and acting
Manager of Milling
He started his Geologics business in 1982, and
developed the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig, which
culminated in the technology being used in 27
countries in commodities such as tin, minerals sands,
gold and nickel.
2015 Volume 5

Chris has always had a passion for innovation and has
received numerous prestigious awards throughout his
career - among them The Prince Philip Prize for
Australian Design, the Advanced Engineering
Innovation Heroes Award, Achievement for Industry
Award and most recently, in 2012, I was in attendance
when he received the MITA Award (Mineral Industries
Technique Award) awarded by the AusIMM.
In 2013 Chris formed a company called IMPTEC
(Innovative Mineral Processing Technologies) with an
aim to find a process to reduce the enormous power
consumption required to achieve ultra-fine sizes in
mineral comminution.
Key points from the presentation were:
• Crushing and grinding are vital links in the
processing chain.
• The rapidly increasing demand for and
dramatically escalating cost of ultra-fine
comminution needed to be addressed.
• The cost of crushing is much lower than the
cost of grinding. However, the transition from
crushing to grinding has historically taken
place at relatively coarse sizes, simply
because conventional crushing devices are not
designed for finer products.
• The cost of grinding escalates sharply as finer
and finer products are required from harder
and finer feeds.
• The IMPTEC super-fine crusher is the
successful end product of 20 years of thought
bubbles and 18 years development work and
is the third particle size reduction device
conceived, built and tested over that time.
• The low cost super-fine crusher is designed to
provide a wet or dry, media free, low energy
route to ultra-fine products from hard mineral
assemblages.
• Super-fine crushing adds a powerful new
dimension to particle size reduction
technology.
At the conclusion of Chris’ talk, Mark Drechsler,
Consultant Engineering Geologist with Worley Parsons
spoke briefly about some practical and research
applications of the IMPTEC technology. A research
program has been developed by University of Adelaide
and funded by ZeroWaste SA to determine the
improvement of reactivity of slags (namely Nyrstar
Black Sand) with Super Fine Crushing. It has shown
that the final concrete product displays increasing
strength with increased fineness.
Committee Member David Pollard gave the Vote of
Thanks and the door prize was won by Jim Thorpe
from Bureau Veritas.
Door Prize Winner Jim Thorpe with our event sponsor Daniel
Chippendale from MEC Mining
Thanks again to Chris, Mark and Lachlan.
The Branch would also like to extend a special thanks
to our Gold sponsor for 2015 and sponsor for this
technical talk – MEC Mining – and to Daniel
Chippendale who attended on their behalf.

Vacation Information Night and Soft Skills Seminar
The AusIMM Adelaide Student Chapter held a
combined Vacation Information Night and Soft Skills
Seminar on Wednesday 5 August. Approximately 30
students attended the event, which was held on the
University of Adelaide Campus. Rose Deane from
Iluka Resources and Kate Hobbs from WIMnetSA
2015 Volume 5

began the evening by providing advice on resume and
cover letter writing.
After a brief interlude with food, drinks and networking
opportunities, the audience heard from four students
who had been successful in obtaining vacation work
over the past years. The speakers, Michael, Christos,
Daniel and Irraisha, talked about their experiences in a
wide range of locations, from the heat of Olympic Dam
and the Tanami Desert, to the cold of China and
Mongolia. The 4 speakers also provided advice for
applications, what to expect on site and what to
consider when applying for vacation work.
Christos, Michael, Daniel and Irraisha gave presentations about their
vacation work experiences
While vacation work presentations were running,
student members were also able to get their resume
checked and critiqued by Kate and Rose. This
opportunity proved especially beneficial, with the
feedback received being invaluable for students in the
lead up to the vacation work application period.
Special thanks must go to Rose and Kate for their help
on the night.
The Adelaide Student Chapter Committee hopes that
this event was beneficial to all students who attended
and hope to see an increased attendance next year.

What’s news with the Women in Mining Network South Australia
August Informal Networking Event
The WIMnetSA August Networking Event on Friday 21
August was well attended by a range of professionals
from resource companies to service providers and
consultants, together with students preparing to enter
the industry. As well as having a great selection of
boutique wines and beers to choose from, the Franklin
Hotel served up some delicious food which was
enjoyed by the twenty or so attendees.
Erin Jones and James Baylis
For some, the event was an opportunity to learn more
about AusIMM membership and conferences, discuss
career opportunities, or just meet a few new people.
With many of those attending directly feeling the
downturn of the industry in South Australia, for others
the informal atmosphere and supportive group gave
them a positive environment in which to talk to

New Professionals Network fundraiser for Beyond Blue
The AusIMM New Professionals Network, along with
the AusIMM Adelaide Branch and WIMnetSA, hosted a
networking fundraiser at the South Australian Museum
on Thursday 27 August. The focus of the night was to
raise awareness for mental health and support the
Beyond Blue Foundation. With many feeling the strain
of the lull in industry, the night was a fantastic way to
connect and speak openly about the effects of this and
other stressful situations on our mental health.
The keynote speaker, Colin Kavooris from Beyond
Blue, discussed concerns with the stigma in mental
health and shared his experience of living with anxiety
and depression. With depression affecting 1 in 6
women and 1 in 8 men, and anxiety affecting 1 in 3
women and 1 in 5 men, it is far more common than
first thought. Colin stressed the importance of knowing
your emotional triggers, making time for things you
enjoy and being aware of others who may be suffering
with their mental health.
Colin Kavooris presenting
The sporadic FIFO life style and turbulent mining
industry is often associated with mental health issues.
This is widely reported in the media as being fact
however it is not yet proven if the mental health issues
of FIFO workers differ from that of the general public.
Jackie Robertson of gold event sponsor OZ Minerals
spoke about the measures they are taking in
recognising the signs of mental illness in their work
place. A survey was taken by 700 employees recently
to better understand the effect the FIFO lifestyle has
on their mental health and to identify changes that can
be made for a healthier mental status within the work
place.

provide you with timely peer support. At the very least
it provides contact with others in the industry.
I encourage you to make full use of the networks and
the very real financial support that the AusIMM is
willing to provide.
Many of us find it difficult to discuss our current
situation with friends and colleagues when we’re
struggling – I know I did when this happened to me the
first time. Should you know someone doing it tough,
please encourage them to avail themselves of MAP,
as we believe we have a role extending support to all
industry professionals.
I know from personal experience how hard it can be to
admit to yourself that you need support. Please
contact me as the first step.

Metplant Conference 2015
Metallurgical Plant Design and Operating Strategies – World’s Best Practice 2015 (MetPlant 15) will be the 7th AusIMM conference in this series, and has been by convened since its inception by David Pollard and Geoff Dunlop. This year they are joined in the planning by Peter Cameron, known to many in Adelaide from his years with AMDEL.
The conference accepts relevant, high quality papers within its themes, and this year is again in Perth, 7 – 8 September. Over 50 authors are currently writing papers. The quality of the abstracts offered is again high, and includes a number of invited papers. A continuing theme through MetPlant conferences has been designing plants that work – i.e. they are completed on time, within budget, and meet or exceed operations specifications. This topic is continued in 2015, and the current industry focus on geometallurgy should be resulting in better understanding of the geometallurgy, mineralogy and texture of the ore leading to better sampling, better designed and more extensive testwork including pilot plant testwork, than some projects in the past.
The conference hosts a large exhibition of engineering companies, equipment suppliers and related companies, integral to providing networking opportunities and information to delegates. More information is on the conference website: http://www.metplant2015.ausimm.com.au/

ATTENTION GENTLEMEN – Please pass
this invitation on to your Wife with our compliments...
The days of Wine and Roses occur regularly for the members of the AusIMM Adelaide Women’s
Auxiliary who meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month, at local homes or community centres, to enjoy the friendships that the Auxiliary has offered for over 50 years.
Every month is entertaining – with either a guest speaker (Lieutenant Governor Hieu Van Le was
our compelling speaker in June), a visit or tour of significant places that resonate with the essence of South Australia, or some exciting entertainment such as members of the SA Police Band whose memorable music we enjoyed in May, and who will be performing in Switzerland at the Basel Tattoo this year.
The Auxiliary, which was initially formed from the wives of men in mining, are keen to invite
prospective members to join their activities, which always include morning tea and lunch, a glass of wine, and every birthday girl receives a beautiful rose!
We would love to share our membership with you...so please contact our President, Aggie
Bampton, on 8264 7745 or email [email protected], so that she can let you know about our next special function – our Christmas get-together at the Robin Hood Hotel is always popular, but we have several events before then that will be very enjoyable and informative – we look forward to welcoming you into our group.
