Skin Puncture for Adults
Peripheral blood is obtained from the tip of the 3 rdand 4thnger or earlobe in adults.
Procedure
1. Wipe the area with a cotton ball soaked in 7! isoprop"l alcohol.#. Allow the site to air$dr" or pat$dr" with sterile cotton.3. Puncture the preferred site with a sterile disposable lancet. %he puncture is
ideall" #$3 mm in depth.4. Wipe o& the rst drop of blood and collect the subse'uent drops. A(oid
s'uee)ing the puncture site* as this will alter the composition of the blood.
+ote, -icult" in obtaining blood can be relie(ed b" putting warm compress on the
site.

Procedure for S"ringe 0ethod
1. Appl" the tourni'uet 3$4 inches abo(e the puncture site in a half$knot manner
to congest the (ein. Ask the patient to open and close hand the se(eral
times.#. leanse the puncture site with 7! isoprop"l alcohol. Allow the site to dr".
Puncture the (ein with a sterile #$#1 gauge needle attached to a s"ringe at
a 12 angle and a depth of about .2$1 cm.3. oosen the tourni'uet and gentl" aspirate the blood.
4. After obtaining the re'uired 'uantit" of blood* place sterile gau)e or cottono(er the puncture site then withdraw the needle. Appl" pressure to stop
bleeding. +e(er 5e6 the arm.
+ote, f bleeding is not arrested* ele(ate the arm and appl" more pressure. Sta"
with the patient until the bleeding stops.
-etach the needle from the s"ringe and transfer the blood along the side of
an appropriate test tube. f the tube is anticoagulated* mi6 the tube with blood b"
gentle in(ersion.
Procedure for 8(acuated %ube 0ethod
1. Attach the two$wa" needle to the adaptor. Prepare the e(acuated tubes.#. Appl" the tourni'uet 3$4 inches abo(e the site of puncture.3. leanse the site with 7! isoprop"l alcohol. Allow the site to dr". Puncture

the adaptor until the other side of the needle penetrates the e(acuated tube*
making sure that the needle remains in position in the (ein.4. oosen the tourni'uet and withdraw the needle when blood has lled the
tube tot its proper (olume.2. 9entl" in(ert the tube se(eral times for proper mi6ing if the tube is
anticoagulated.
+ote, :or multiple blood draws* remo(e the tube from the adaptor without
withdrawing the needle and push the succeeding tubes into the adaptor.
