THE BUYER Estimated PriceEstimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance).

Reserve PriceThe reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold.

Buyer’s PremiumBuyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.

BEFORE THE AUCTIONViewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale.

Lithograph: 85 x 140 cm Signed, lower right

RP 200.000.000 - 300.000.000USD 15,380 - 23,100

Ting Shao Kuang was born in Chenggu, a village located in the Northern province of Shanxi, China in 1939. The year Ting was born, this area, which once was the center of an advanced civilization, was reeling from the ravages of the Sino-Japanese war. But as the war progressed, Ting's father, a Kuomintang official in Beijing, helped rally the Nationalist forces, and the Japanese Imperial Army was eventually defeated. By age 11, he was painting every day, using cooking oil as a medium for his pigment. Despite his lack of adequate supplies, he evidenced such remarkable talent that, in 1954, he was given the opportunity to attend the prestigious high school affiliated with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In 1957, Ting was accepted at Beijing's Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. Although he was taught "Socialist Realism" in his classes, it was during this time that he discovered the works of Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani. The paintings of these artists inspired him to experiment with new themes and techniques. It is generally known that Picasso's paintings have exerted a great influence on the modern world, as have Oriental paintings. Ting Shao Kuang, a prominent contemporary Chinese painter in America, has produced works characterized by a combination of traditional Chinese painting techniques and the more expressive Western art forms. He has created a unique style that does not belong exclusively to the East or the West, but to the world.

Born in Leeuwarden and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesian soil when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. Two years later he moved to Bali, which became a great source of inspiration for his painting.

After the war settled in Ubud in Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran and dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. He also made many portraits, usually of doe eyed young men (he was in the words of a long time Ubud expatriate euphemism a member of the “club”). These are very stylized and use a bright palate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. The painting becomes all the more poignant when this separation is considered – the immortalization of a reality that was to him a fulfillment of a dream.

Alit SembodoAlit Sembodo was born in Magelang, Central Java, 10th August 1973. He took his formal school at the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta where he won the Patisara Affandi Adi Karya Awards in 1999. Alit’s paintings have shown the tendency to become a media for social commentary. He does not purely make social criticism of the wisdom or practices of the ruling politics. He only goes as far as demonstrating the problems of society through the language of his paintings, according to his own perceptive and perception.

Most of his works demonstrate strong characteristics, narrative and descriptive crowd in all kinds of poses and scenes that filled every corner of the canvas. He never left the canvas empty. The canvas seems full with parade of masses like a colossal theater performance. Perhaps this has become Alit’s concern towards all kinds of social problems amongst the populace. He seems does not merely make social criticism towards the ruling politics, but he only goes to describe the condition in his painting through his own perspective and perception.

Awards:2000 – The finalist of the Phillip Morris Art Awards 2000 – The finalist of the Indonesian Art Awards1999 – The Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya 1999 – The nominee of 40 Best Winsor & Newton Awards

Born in 1968. He was graduated from the Institute of Fine Art (ISI) Yogyakarta. He had lived for 2 years in Switzerland to continue his study and working. He has participated in several exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas. He had his solo exhibition in Semarang Gallery (2002). He received awards as the first winner of PMIAA, a finalist for Asean Art Award (2000) in Singapore and Indofood Art Award, Jakarta (2002). Now he lives in Bantul, Yogyakarta. The exhibition at the furnace gallery (15 – 30 May 2010) was Budi Haryono aka Ubrux’ first exhibition in Europe, a breakthrough after his three earlier solos at Semarang Gallery, Bentara Budaya Jakarta, and iPreciation gallery in Singapore.

Budi Ubrux loves to create contemporary realist artworks by exploring newspaper as a true-lies media. This phenomenon is put into canvas in the form of human being with skin from newspaper. Figures wrapped from top to toe in newspaper appeared suggesting a futuristic imagination of what could happen in our uncertain future. Bandaged, swathed and tied, the faceless sculptural figures are able to lead the imagination in wild proximity. Since then, art observers and collectors became interested in his works.

Lee Man FongLee’s subject matter included wide range of human figures, landscapes and animals particularly those commonly found in Chinese brush paintings, such as goldfish, doves, chickens, rabbits, horses and tigers. He developed his paintings by creating a personal expression based on observation of live and nature around him. His paintings often are able to transport us to forgotten places in the wilderness, where old trees, withered mambo grow out of hardened rocks. The present lot was one of the many themes about cock and hen. The pair standing on the hardened rock occupies the foreground, while the background is twisted branches of withered bamboo. Lee showed how it is possible to marry many of the most essential elements of both classical painting traditions – light, shadow and realism on the other hand, and expressionism, experienced calligraphic brushwork, and the balance between form and emptiness on the other.

Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. He had a life-long love affair with Bali. Snel immediately fell in love with the island; a love so deep until he marred a local girl, apply for Indonesia citizenship and embrace Balinese Hinduism. He lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998.

Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style: he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life.

Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Jogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali.

Abdul Aziz is now regarded as one of Indonesia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. Originally from Central Java but a resident of Bali for the last part of his life, Aziz was widely known and highly sought after for his realistic paintings of village scenes and portrait figures. Aziz’s paintings include beautiful women, depicted alone or in groups, and portraits both painted and sculpted. Yet his oeuvre stands out as more of an individual whose contributions to Indonesian art history exceeds most, placing him in a class of artists who are continuously referred to as the ‘greats’: those individual artists that Western-trained or influenced art writers found to be the most original and innovative of their time. Aziz was only seventeen when Indonesia proclaimed its independence from Dutch colonial rule in 1945. He was already known, both as an artist and a singer. After four years of Japanese occupation, Indonesia then entered into a war for independence against the three returning colonials (Netherlands, Britain, and Portugal). That struggle ended in 1948, with international acceptance of the Republic of Indonesia. However, the Dutch still fought on until 1949. Purwokerto (in central Java) was attacked in July 1947, and Aziz was able to paint and sketch battle scenes during the war as he became a revolutionary fighter. Aziz only painted when inspired. The Long March was one of his paintings that was inspired by his own battle experience.
