M2 "HSS"isthestandardmaterialusedforallICSHSScuttingtools.M2hasgoodredhardnessandretainsitscuttingedgelongerthanothergeneralpurposehighspeedsteels,notasshockresistantorasflexibleasotherHSSgradeswithlesstungsten.Generallyfavoredforhighproductionmachinework.
M7 "HSS"isusedformakingheavierconstructiondrillsthatcanbeusedforportabledrillingofhardsheetmetalalloys.GenerallyfavoredforworkinAircraftplantswhereflexibilityandextendeddrilllifeareequallyimportant.
M50 "HSS"isusedformakingdrillsthatwillbeusedforportabledrillingandwherebreakageisaproblemduetoflexingthedrill.DoesnothavetheredhardnessofothergradesofHSSwithtungsten.GenerallyfavoredforHardwareandContractoruse,althoughtheyarealsosoldforindustrialuses.
M35 "5%COBALT"isonlyusedbyICSformakingtoolbits.IthassomeoftheincreasedredhardnesspropertiesofM42,andisnotquitesosusceptibletoshock.
M42 "SUPERCOBALT"isthestandardcobaltmaterialusedforallICScobaltcuttingtools.Ithasexcellentresistancetoabrasionandverygoodredhardnessforworkingdifficultmaterials.
