LEDs
Soon to come test of the LEDs to determine the best layout in the rig.We would like to test the CERN HSV camera with the LEDs and the windows in the rig to see if they produce enough light and/or generate reflections

ConstraintsPhysical constraints:• The powder trough is approximately 20mm wide, with a sweeper paddle/brush of matching
diameter.• In the current design there is ~12mm of available space above the trough for a linear stage or
worm drive to propel the sweeper and rotate it. There My be scope to enlarge this gap slightly, but it should be kept as small as possible.
• There is a large area of 165mm long x 111mm wide x 46mm deep’ up-stream of the target for drive motors, gears and mounting components.
• There is also a space of ‘57mm long x 111 wide’ x 46mm deep’ for mounting components at the down-stream of the sample.
• The stroke length of the sweeper is ~160mm.
Refer to further dimensions on the following pages
Electrical constraints:• The controller will be operated by a user in a control room, some 150m away from the linear
stage itself• The 150m control/power cable is limited to 50v and 3A• 22 electrical pins are available through the electrical feedthrough
Environment:• The trough will be exposed to short pulses of radiation, which affect the choice of materials
and the electrical control.• Electronics should be avoided, and a simplistic analogue electrical system is preferred• Use of plastics, rubbers and lubricants should be agreed before use. In general,
metallic components are preferred.

Draft Specification
• Please quote for the following:– Linear and rotary drive, independently controlled,
to fit within the allowed envelope– All motors, gears, bushes and bearings– Controller to control linear drive between two end
stops (limit switches). Speed control preferable.– Controller to control rotary motion of sweeper.
Note – the sweeper shall be capable of rotating both when the liner drive is in operation, and when it has stopped.
– Limit switches set up for one-off adjustment
• Other information:– Linear and rotating drive shall be of sufficient
torque to allow sweeper to perform it’s function (to be discussed in more detail).
– Materials should be “reasonably” radiation hard (for further discussion – note – these components will only be subject to radiation for a duration of ~1 week)
– Linear drive speed – not critical – can sacrifice speed for torque on a smaller motor. Ideally linear speed adjustable from half a full stroke/minute – 2 full strokes/minute
– Rotary motion speed adjustable from 60 – 250 rpm
– Design may vary dramatically from that of the concept outlined, provided it fits within the specified envelope.

Sweeper testsBrass or nylon brushes work well and any of the “gun cleaning” shapes seems effective.Surface of the tungsten is as flat as could be expected on a hand-held test and possibly good enough to reset the experiment.
Would nylon survive the dose we are expecting?
Not much time left to finalise/purchase the mechanical stage.
