Pastor’s Notes
A GREAT NEED, A GREAT RESPONSE
A few weeks ago, we shared the news that our sister parish in Cleveland, La Sagrada Familia, was faced with a crisis when the van they rely on for so much of their pastoral work had to be replaced.
All of us are accustomed to having easy access to the places we need to go, but in a poor urban parish it can be an overwhelming challenge. Their van is essential to bring older parishioners to church, transport youth and adults to activities, and move food and other items to where they’re needed most.
Parishioners at La Sagrada Familia tried to raise the funds to replace the van but fell short of their goal. They turned to us as their sister parish for help. Over the years, we have developed close ties and a shared history providing Friendship Meals, supporting our El Salvador mission, and other activities that have linked our two parishes for over 25 years.
Just a few weeks after this need was made known, because of the generosity of members of Holy Martyrs, they are now able to purchase their much-needed van.
The people of La Sagrada Familia parish are deeply grateful for that generosity and for the selfless spirit that prompted it.
During this Extraordinary Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has challenged Catholics worldwide to find ways to respond to the needs of the poor. He said, “To live charitably means not looking out for our own interests but carrying the burdens of the weakest and poorest among us as our own.”
My hope is that all of us will find ways to live that spirit and that our whole parish will continue to look for opportunities to do extraordinary things, great and small, to help those who need it most.
God Bless Generous Hearts!
Father Steve

For families who will have a child preparing for the
sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist in 2016/17;
the preparation time for these sacraments begins in
the first grade. We would like to be able to provide an
opportunity for all our children to have a spot held
for them. Parents are asked to
contact the office of Faith Formation
(PSR office) to register if you haven't
received our online registration
email.
The Spiritual Child: The Nurturing Parent—Part I
After fifteen years of scientific research, the evidence is clear: we are hard-wired for spiritual connection with God. This
natural spirituality, UNLIKE other lines of development, appears to begin whole and fully expressed. Without parental
nurturing, however, this spiritual development weakens from a culture that constantly has our children feeling judged and
pressured to perform, and that trains them to evaluate others that way. Our predominantly materialistic, 24/7 media-
infused world is not set up for introspective thought and reflection. Downtime is thought of as unproductive, and we
fill quiet moments with diversions. (cont. next week)
Online registration for next year’s PSR classes has be-
gun. If you did not receive an email about this and would
like to register your child, please contact the PSR office.
We need your child’s name and parents’ current email
address.
