The South Lyon East Cougar Band has had a very busy fall! They have been working on their marching show since the

first week of August! The show entitled “Atlantis” has been performed at each home football game. On Tuesday, October 7,

they took the show to Marching Band Festival in Royal Oak and received a top rating (1) for their excellent performance.

Congratulations to Matthew Smith, Band Director, and all the instructors and band students for a successful and exciting

marching season.

The three South Lyon East Choirs have been busy getting ready for the Fall Band and Choir Concert. They started off the

year with Choir Camp on Saturday, September 6 at which all the kids enjoyed “meet and greet” activities, lots of singing and

lots of fun. The day ended with a Road Rally.

Two choir students auditioned for and were selected to participate in Regional Honors Choir. This is a choir made up of

select students in our region. Congratulations to Justine Alexander and Amanda Hackbardt!

The Band and Choir Concert combined their efforts on Thursday, October 16 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium for a fabulous con-

cert. All three choirs performed and the A Capella Choir made its debut as well. The band marched into the stadium and

performed their marching show music on stage to finish off the concert .

SLEHS Junior Sarah Kaljian, was one of only 4 other runners 16 years of age who participated in the

Detroit Marathon on October 19th. Way to go Sarah!!

SLEHS Senior, Aaron Hoorn, won 3rd place in a national photo contest sponsored by the American Asso-

ciation of Physics Teachers for his photo called "Stick or Slick: A Cold Conundrum." In Physics every

year, students are assigned a project to take a picture of an interesting physics phenomenon and write

about the physics that is observed in the photo. Mrs. Lee (SLEHS Physics Teacher) chose the top 12

photos and sent them on to the national contest, which last year included over 600 entries. Physics teach-

ers from around the country attend a meeting in July where they vote on the top photos. Congrats Aa-

ron!!

SLEHS Junior Adam Caruso qualified for the state finals in boys cross country this year. This was his second trip

to the state finals for cross country. He qualified by finishing 9th at the regional meet at Lake Erie Metro Park with

a time of 17:23. He had been seeded 14th going into the race. On November 1st, he ran in the state finals at Michi-

gan International Speedway, finishing with a time of 17:22. This was the third fastest time ever posted by a Cougar

at Michigan International Speedway.

GERMANGERMANGERMAN

In Germany and Austria St. Martin’s Day (Martinstag) is celebrated on November 11th. Children go to

houses with paper lanterns and candles, and sing songs about St. Martin in return for treats. Often, a man

dressed as St. Martin rides a horse in front of the procession. Although there was no horse galloping

through the halls, Frau Huffman’s German students celebrated by singing “Lanterne” carrying their home

made lanterns through the halls and making stops in the offices, where they were rewarded with candy.

Spanish

SLEHS Spanish classes celebrated the Day of the Dead. This is a Spanish holiday centered on honoring

loved ones who have passed away. Altars are created in the loved one’s memory, constructed of photo-

graphs and personal items that reflect who the person was when he/she was alive. Students in Ellen

Harrington’s, Jon Cadwallader’s and Donna Mahon’s classes formed groups and chose a famous, but

dead, person to honor. Each group created a special altar and gave a brief presentation/explanation to

Their class.

Present:

Administration: Dr. David Phillips

Staff Members: Pete Schmitz

Parents: Pam Bagosy, Michelle Brown

Students:

9th Kara Mekjian, Jay Sha

Announcements – Dr. Phillips commented on these recent events: Curriculum Night

Homecoming Activities-Great Job Student Council!

NHS Induction – Prestigious ceremony took place on October 8th. New officers and members were

inducted under the guidance of advisor, Mrs. Joslin.

Academic Awards – Nice ceremony. Unfortunately our guest speaker, Kim Russell could not at-

tend due to an injury incurred by her father.

Fall Concert – excellent performances by our expanding Choir and Marching Bands.

Upcoming Events – Dr. Phillips reviewed current and future events. Fall Testing – Practice ACT, October 22

Parent/Teacher Conferences-Thursday, October 23, 3:00-9:00 p.m.

Pink-Out game vs. Pinckney – Friday, October 24

Staff Development Day, No School – Tuesday, November 4.

School Improvement/NCA-Update/Annual Report October had several topics where school improvement related topics were addressed:

South Lyon East High School will be up for an external review for AdvancEd accreditation next school

year. The Steering Committee has met (October 21)and will begin discussions with the remainder of the

staff at the next staff meeting. Five committees have been created to look at the five standards were we

must rate ourselves and provide evidence or our status. More information, including the need to survey

parents, students and staff will be an ongoing topic at future SIP meetings.

The Bond Committee continues to meet in preparation for the May ballot. The proposed Bond plans are

not anticipated to increase taxes for residents.

Robotics – No report this month.

Budget Discussion – Dr. Phillips shared that audit has taken place and according to the official 6/30/14 state-

ment, SLEHS was under budget by over $18,000. To get a better handle on expenditures during the year,

a process has been designed by Amy Finlayson, principal’s secretary to track purchases in direct line

with departmental budgets. The system is working well.

Code of Conduct – Dr. Phillips expressed concern that running in the halls has become an issue again. He

pointed out that the design of SLEHS creates many blind spots due to corners at every hallway. We had

a teacher get hurt last year and apparently there have been some students experiencing or just missing

collisions this year. Dr. Phillips referred the issue to the Student Council for dialogue on how we will

address the situation. Several ideas surfaced during the SIP Meeting. Student Council will place the

issue on their next meeting agenda and report back to SIP.

Old Business

We will be looking for a specific outline for reporting services by the Key Club and Mr. Engel.

In September, Mr. Grieves submitted a proposal to the SIP Committee requesting recognition of Latin Club students

who have successful met the rigor of the International Exam, to be awarded a school letter. A brief discussion

regarding one activities letter to encompass all of the activities and clubs was suggested. There was no objections to

the idea and could be discussed at a later date.

In calling the question of the committee, all was in favor of the proposal, there were no opposition. The motion

carries.

New Business

Mrs. Bagosy had a request by another parent to open for discussion appropriate participation at Dances. The concern

was primarily focused on inappropriate dancing.

Dr. Phillips acknowledged the concern but also stated it is not a simple matter to supervise. He informed the

group that 650 students attended the Homecoming Dance and 80% of them were dancing immediately in front of the

DJ. The first concern is confined space…students congregate and dance very close to a point where passing through

is difficult if not possible. If anything there is a concern for safety in the event an evacuation would be needed. With

the tight space chaperones cannot get the minority of students that may be dancing inappropriately. And if

they did, students would most likely continue once the chaperones moved on. It then becomes an exhausting game

Of catch me if you can. The administration does not want to create an environment of sanction and authority. He

Stated it would ruin the atmosphere where the majority of students are participating appropriately. Many schools

have tried several measures, some with varying degrees of success but not entirely.

Dr. Phillips also stated he was concerned with the inadequate lighting at the dance.

Dr. Phillips sought input from the students. When asked if they felt they were in a position of taking away or

adjusting something the students wanted, the consensus was yes. It was decided to open the topic for dialogue at the

Student Council level as well. Rachel made a note to place it on the next agenda.

Parking Lot

Pete Schmitz suggested that coaches be more consistent is announcing which students are to released from classes.

When there are no announcement it puts teaches in a bind to release students on their word. It becomes a matter of

trust and liability. The information will be shared with the AD, Mr. Beutel. Rachel requested that Mr. Ross monitor

students that are speeding around the parking lot at around 6:50 in the morning. Rachel noted that Mr. Ross stations

himself in one spot to sell day passes but wondered if he could somehow note the vehicles involved. There was a

concern with the drop off loop where parents are stopping in the middle and letting students off away from the curb.

It blocks traffic and students run between cars to get to the sidewalk, a potential safety issue. Sarah wondered if cos

tumes will be allowed on Halloween. Dr. Phillips will confer with Mrs. Bowman and an announcement will be

made. Costumes were allowed last year and there were virtually no issues. No masks have been a long standing rule.

Watch the morning announcements.

A question was brought up about recycling in the building. Pete Schmitz provided a history of recycling efforts at

SLEHS and addressed the pragmatic issues of operating a program. Due to a lack of continuity and consistency, the

program lost support.

Meeting adjourned at 3:35 p.m.

Next meeting: November 19, 2014
