his most difficult class that he experienced through high school. As for the teacher that most influ-enced him, was the same teacher he invited to the Top Ten Dinner that had taken place earlier this month. “Mr. Acre was the teacher that most influ-enced me because he al-ways had a passion for teaching,” responded Nes-por. The same as Conner, he was asked if he always had the goal to be top his class. “Yes, I did when I realized that I had the op-portunity.” Both Kira and Cody leave the next year’s students the same advice in order to succeed as they did. “Do not give into senioritis, you are almost there, do not give up now.” The announcing of the Valedictorian will be on the week of graduation.
The end of the school year is finally here. Finals are done, grades are in, and all of the seniors are anxious to walk across the stage and receive their di-ploma. The waiting is over for one more thing also, the results of Valedictorian and Salutatorian. The same as last year, the top two stu-dents of the year are a girl and a boy. The top stu-dents of the Class of 2014 are Kira Conner and Cody Nespor. The expectation of these two for graduating night is the same as every year. The Salutatorian will open the night with a speech with one by the Valedicto-rian soon following. These two have over-come many hardships and worked their hardest through their high school career to reach this point. In an interview with Kira Conner, she was asked what the hardest class she had ever taken and why. She responded, “Probably
calculus because it was the first time I was really chal-lenged and I had to learn how to study for it.” An-other big part of schooling always has to do with who is teaching you. Conner’s teacher that most influ-enced her was, “Mrs. Wal-zer, because she was also the robotics advisor and she always encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone.” When asked if she always had a goal set to become Valedictorian or Salutato-rian and if so when, she went on to say that she had never actually set a goal to be Valedictorian, she just wanted to gradu-ate somewhere near the top. Conner will go on to Grove City College and study English. Cody Nespor is the sec-ond candidate for Valedic-torian. He will go on to Slip-pery Rock University to study Digital Media Pro-duction. AP calculus was
For the 2014 seniors they
have chosen Dr. Travis
Weller as their graduation
speaker. Dr. Weller was
chosen by the 2014 class
officers who are Liz Smith,
Ryan Micsky, Leslie
Colonello, Walter Haines,
and. The class graduation
speaker was chosen during
a class officer meeting
sometime in February.
They decided this because
they thought that he would
deliver a good message to
the graduating class. Dr.
Weller has received this
honor on several previous
occasions.
Also bringing a message
with content that touches
the graduates, Weller also
brings levity and laughter to
this solemn event. This
year it seems particularly
appropriate that he should
speak since Weller himself
just experienced his on
doctorial graduation. Al-
though he has not yet se-
lected a title, he is hard at
work on the contents of this
momentous talk.

Academic Hall of Fame Events by Kara Redmond
Enchanted Forest By Rebekah Falkner
Enchanted Forest, the MHS prom occurred May 9 at Tiffany’s Ban-quet Center. 200 juniors and sen-iors and dates attended the prom. Student Council's Grand March was a success. At prom there was a cookie table, fruit station, cheese and cracker, and a chocolate dipping area. Also there was an unlimited pop bar. The food that was served was pasta Alfredo, au gratin potatoes,
chicken, and roast beef. There was also a salad station. There was a professional photog-rapher as well as a photo booth and DJ Josh. At the end of the night, Junior Class officers an-nounced prom king and queen, Walter Haines and Mariah Beeler. Ron Priester shared his favorite part was dancing and his least favorite was the music. His favorite song played was “This Is
How We Roll.” His least favorite song played was “Turn Down for What.” Clarissa Gleisner’s favor-ite part of prom was the lighting. She said the black lights were amazing! Her least favorite part was the class gift and decorations and that there were no glow sticks. Her favorite song was “Talk Dirty.” And least favorite songs were all the remixes.
The food was delicious as some students and teachers described. Morneweck loved the stuffed chicken. Three Mercer graduates were
added to the Academic Hall of
Fame. Mr. Edward Chadderton,
businessman and community
leader was honored posthumously.
Mrs. Stacey Givens Volpe and Mr.
Steven Casino were also selected.
Many Mercer High School stu-dents received an invitation to the 2014 Academic Awards Banquet. The banquet took place on the May 7. Mike Morneweck, MHS student explained there was a full house. Students ranging from Equus to Academic Games activities in at-tendance, as well as class officers, Honor Roll members and Top Ten Seniors.
This is the first time graduates from
the same class were honored at
the same time. Volpe has distin-
guished herself as a teacher and
speech coach. Casino is an artist
and toy designer known for his
peanut figures. The speeches
highlighted the education these
past students received at MHS.
The inductees received medals

When asked how the class offi-cers came up with the idea of giv-ing the dogwood tree, Leslie Colonello explained, “We remem-bered that a few years ago they cut down the tree out front, and we wanted to plant a new one in its place”. They also considered “A bench to be put back by the locker room for athletes to sit on while waiting for their parents after prac-tice”. They decided on the tree be-cause they all thought that is was pretty and would look nice out by the bench. In Colonello’s opinion the banners on the wall of the li-brary staircase have so far been the best idea for a class gift be-cause it adds a nice touch to the plain staircase. Senior Cullen Taddeo did not even know that the gift was to be the dogwood tree. When asked
what he thought about the class gift, he said “I don’t know. This questioner has just informed me that we already did that. Dogwood trees are cool though”. Taddeo’s favorite class gift from the past is the bench. He says that “the mural looks nice too, but one can always sit and or take a nap on a bench so the bench is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical”. They will plant the tree small and the school will get to watch it grow through the years, remembering
The tradition for many years has been that the Senior class gives a gift to the school. Many gifts are displayed inside the building but some are also outside. Many of the gifts are unnoticed as students walk down the hall. Some of the past gifts are the bench outside from the class of 1999, the ban-ners on the wall on the staircase by the library, the sign above the auditorium saying “High School Auditorium” from the class of 2005. There are also many more. This year’s class gift is a dogwood tree. Dogwoods have two seasons of special beauty. In the spring it produces long lasting white or pink blooms and in the fall its leaves turn a scarlet red color. They can grow up to 20-25 feet tall. The tree has been planted behind the bench from the class of 99.
Sports Highlights for Spring The spring sports season at MHS brought hard fought wins and heart wrenching losses. All the teams Mid-dle and High School faced competi-tion but walked away knowing they had done their very best on the field. Many students achieved their per-sonal best records. Teams faced losses that they felt they should have won; they also won games that seemed almost miraculous. The outstanding team, however, was
the Track and Field group. Coached by a number of outstanding men, each an expert in his own field these individuals worked hard to present a solid force in a number of areas. The following students were absent Thursday and Friday, May 22 and 23 to participate in or attend the PIAA State Track & Field Championships: Megan McKinney, Nicole Young, Courtney Young, Jarred Davis, Chase Hoffman and Mindy Brown.
comfortable walking across stage in them. If one does not feel com-fortable walking in them wear dress flats. Just absolutely no flip flops. For the boys, wear dress pants, not shorts or blue jeans. For a shirt, wear a button up dress shirt with a tie. Also remember wear something that will not cause someone to get too warm. For the shoes, wear either black or brown
With graduation finally being here the class of 2014 is trying to de-cide what to wear for the cere-mony. For the graduating girls, wear a sundress or a nice skirt with a blouse. Try to avoid long sleeves because the graduation robe will be over top of the actual outfit and with the lights shining down it may get too warm sitting up there. For shoes, wear heals if one feels

is said to have been created in the shape of a mortar board. It is believed that the shape is sym-bolic of a master craftsmen show-ing that we have become masters at what we do and are ready to move one. The tassel is also worn many different ways to show the type of graduation. For high school students graduating, the tassel starts out on the right then is flipped to the left after receiving a diploma. Robes came about in thirteenth century Europe and were known as a ‘houpland’. They were worn by both genders as they are to-day. It was considered very fash-ionable and soon became adapted to academic wear. Differ-ent cuts, colors and styles of the robes symbolize the type of
graduation, level of study, and fields of study. For colleges there is a certain code that robes and the rest of the graduation dress that they must follow that was drafted in 1895. The graduation ceremony itself
has also changed dramatically
during the years but it still retains
the idea behind it. Graduation it-
self along with the academic dress
for it is all about moving forward
from one section of life to the next.
As we graduate in the coming
weeks and the tassel is switched
from right to left we too like other
graduates will be moving forward
from one study to the next and
from one phase in life to the next.
Today, as we near graduation and the wearing of blue robes and notoriously annoying tassels, not many people stop to think where this traditional dress came from though it is a big part of our cul-ture. Dating back to medieval times the cap, gown, and hood have been worn to show status and comple-tion of academics and are believed to have been begun by scholastic monks. Although we do not wear the hood, it is said that the hood began with Druid priests who wore them to show superiority. Today the hood is worn down the back and off the shoulders to show the de-gree and institution. The cap we wear has gone through many changes throughout the times but it

Dumbest School Rule
Anatomy Field Trip Review By Samantha Phillips
Mrs. Sevin’s anatomy classes had the opportunity to view open heart surgery on May 2
and May 6.
Both trips went to Allegheny General near Cranberry. Students accompa-nied by Mrs. Sevin and Mrs. Santom left the school at 6:00 am. Once they arrived they were able to go up to the observation at 7:45. Surgery began at 8:00. The fourth period class, which
went on May 2nd
, viewed a mitral valve repair. The mitral valve is lo-cated between the left atrium and left ventricle. The patient had complained about a shortness of breath, which was a result of a leaky valve. Second period, who went on May 6
th, viewed a single bypass. A bypass
is necessary when an artery or a vein is not doing its job of transporting the
blood properly. The surgeon uses the subclavian artery to take the job of the dysfunctional artery. Both sur-geries lasted between 3 and 3.5 hours. Allegheny General Hospital is a teaching facility for students. Patients are required to sign a consent form so that they are aware that they may be observed by students during their operation. Dr. Thomas was one of many doctors in the room. After sur-gery, he came up to the observation room to talk to the class. H e e x -plained what all went on during the surgery. Of course, Mrs. S e v i n ’ s a n a t o m y class al-ready knew most of what he was say-ing because they are studious students!

pyrotechnics for the suicide. For everything else, I leave to my imagination.
Samantha Moury: Make sure you look up to the seniors, get your work done, don’t
mess around, act like and adult, get good grades, you can have fun but not too much
fun, be responsible, don’t lie, be a good role model, be nice and kind to everyone, never
miss a day of school. You will get good things if you are a good senior. Don’t break the
rules.
Cody Nespor: To Josh Wamboldt and Liam McQuiston I leave the percussion section.
Marching band, pep band, concert band; they are all in your hands now, make us proud.
To Brandon Anderson, Tim Lang, Mark Peters, and Tyler Marsh I leave the bowling

ever. Never let someone hold you back. Ladies NEVER base anything on a boy. They
are waffles. If Mrs. Santom hasn’t told you this yet, high school never gets easier, nicer,
or whatever. It is not meant to expand your horizons, live with no regrets but never let
your future escape your grip. To those who feel that it is already gone, it is never too
late to better yourselves. No one is better than you, not even me. Seniors, take it day by
day, do not quit trying, it is the home stretch. It is scary, fast, hard, causes tears and
memories which you will never forget. Be involved to the exclusive people. Mrs. Bello,
I give you thanks for lifting my thoughts when I could not pick them up myself. To
Clarissa G, thank you for being my first friend. Nick Manfredi, wow, met you in fourth
grade, left in seventh, and then we happen to graduate together in Mercer rather than
WMHS. Sam Wansor, believe it or not, you gave me inspiration to be a better person,
and I love your clothes! Alivia Young, girl, people hate but just remember everyone has
an opinion, who cares. You always make me smile! Never give up, only three more
years to go! Emily Swartz, you are one of the friendliest people I met here. You’re per-
sonality is straight and forward, nothing better. You will be a person that impacts so
many lives!
Ronald Priester: The one piece of advice I have to offer is to get on Miss Giles’ good
side on day one of her class. It will go a lot smoother for you.
Nicole Redmond: To Aundria Gregory, keep an eye on the boys at lunch and don’t let
them fight over trucks. Have fun! Jake Bartley, one more year. You can do it! Love you.
To Mr. Rust, keep an eye on my brother and do not be scared to smack him around a
little bit. Chase Remond, be good and pull your pants up. I love you! To Bryanna Fedor-
chack, I leave my volleyball and to the volleyball team, keep supporting Florida State
University.
Eli Rutter: I would like to leave all my possessions, house and truck included, to Au-
burn Angermeier.
Erica Schoen: I leave John another year at Mercer. Have fun but also stay focused on
your school work. Also to John and all of his friends, I leave you someone else to take
you home every day, and stay out of trouble. To Riley Kennis I leave you someone else
to obsess over the Pirates with and someone else to exchange weird looks in the hall-
ways.
Kaitlin Sieg: My senior will is more or less to my friends that I just associate with in
school, as well as some of my fellow seniors. You guys made my experience one crazy
ride, and I have gained and lost friendships over the years. I leave my love and memo-
ries; they are some of the most cherished things I have.
Katie Skidmore: My apron I am leaving to someone who will wear it with pride and
honor. I leave Rachel Stine someone to fight with over foods. Rachel Bish, someone to
yell at you at basketball and a new track buddy. I leave Hannah and Jessie to teach some
new freshman. Kayla Mc, STATS! I leave Rachel Evans someone to be lazy with at
track. Noah, someone to annoy you in study hall. Jordan Baker, someone else to mess
with. Dannah, someone else to hit you in the parking lot. Shayna, help Mrs. Lengauer…
Please! And do not use the microwave. To everyone downstairs I leave people to come
visit you so your days are not so boring. Julia, I leave someone else to vent on the way
to school and Matt Mathias, someone else to have a love-hate relationship with.
Liz Smith: I leave Taylor Moon another lovely year at Mercer High School, and lonely
Saturday night’s drinking tea on the kitchen floor with Erin McLaughlin and me. I leave
the ski club in the hands of Nate Cameron and Jake Schmid, even though I know it is
impossible for them to be better skiers than me... Just kidding… Try to have fun without
me! I leave show choir and musical choreography to Kaitlin Wiggins along with finding
a new person to harass. I leave Ian Ollila more lunchbox surprises and Ryan Hamilton
two more fun years in the musical without me. I leave my dance line girls the advice
“when in doubt, swish it out” and Friday night football game memories. Lastly, I leave
all students at MHS a great experience and wish them all good luck.
Grant Smith: To Julia Hile I leave my pep band playlist and the skill to play them well.
To Trevor Ference I leave long, boring Boy Scout meetings with all of the younger
boys. Have fun with that. To Chris Micsky I leave my quads. You will need to replace
the heads as soon as you start playing. Sorry about that. To Jon-Carl Hostetler I leave

you your nickname: Jarl. To Josh Guilky I leave you five gallons of diesel. Oh wait
your in my class, sorry, didn’t think you would make it. To Logan Clarke I leave the
nickel you still owe me. I know you won’t pay it back.
Sarah Stevens: I leave the soccer team to Adelyn Cook, you are the only mature one
left, good luck. To Aubrie, Sami, Kelsey, and Haylie I leave my laziness and my ability
to slack off at every practice. To Megan Lang I leave my great knees and all of my boy-
friends. To Mr. Chess, I leave three more fabulous seniors to hang out with first period.
Kyle Strain: I leave my charming personality to Kyle Wamboldt. I leave my parking
space (#4) to my brother but since he won’t get his license he doesn’t need it. I leave
total domination of the Mercer Bands to Andrea Sajewski.
Kellie Swanson: Jessy Cupic, I leave one of my best friends all of our crazy memories,
from almost getting into brawls to our crazy J-twp runs. I love you so much – from your
best friend Kickstand! Kayla McCullough, to my little sister, I leave all of our study hall
memories, sign language across the cafeteria, and the countless memories we’ve shared
together. Alex Denny, I leave my little cousin with the reminder to soak up every mem-
ory of the rest of your high school career. Live each moment to the fullest and take care
of Grayson next year! I love you! Time Lang and Noah Minarik, I leave you guys with
all of our Spanish memories, and all snacks in my purse. “No me gusta!.” Tera and Ty
Porterfield, I leave my little buddies with all our good memories, from doing my nails
for prom, to shooting crossbow for the first time, I’m going to miss you guys! To all the
juniors, make the most of your senior year, take as many college visits as you can, and
apply for all the scholarships that you can. It is going to go so fast, do not let it slip by.
Live up every moment. To the rest of the school; study hard, work harder, and avoid all
the stupid drama because by the time you are a senior, none of it will even matter. Enjoy
your time in high school, it goes by fast.
Emily Swartz: I leave the Four Man Wolf Pack to the softball team. I leave Aubrie
Angermier the ability to give somebody else the “Respect Choke”. I leave Leah Martin
best wishes and better judgment, as well as somebody else to drive home with on I80 at
3AM. I leave my baby sister Kelsey the best last three years of high school possible. I
leave the softball team the Region and District titles and state playoffs. I leave Aubrie
and Sam the couch and food in Mrs. Santom’s office. I leave many more lonely days in
Mrs. Bello’s room to Taylor Moon. I leave Brayton Edwards somebody else to ask peo-
ple to jump his car. Lastly I leave maturity and respect to all the middleschoolers.
Cullen Taddeo: To Adrien Reeher I leave the position of leader of the saxophone sec-
tion. Do not go to mad with power. You have both Maddie and mine’s blessing. To Ian
Ollila I leave a lot of spoons. Stop eating your applesauce with a fork. It’s weird. To
Nate Hinkson I leave the title of Marching Band Loading Crew Captain. I know you
will get the job done. And finally, I bequeath unto Sean Strain the title of the Grand
Master of the Too Cool Lodge and the task to take an apprentice of your own under
your wing. Your time has come protégé.
Bradley Thompson: To Janalyn Miklas, It was incredible being able to meet someone
like you who strongly loves Music and Art. I was able to hear the sounds of opera with
you, as well as have a blast with you in Speech. These memories will remain with me
forever. I leave you my passion for creativity, and I hope you never stop using yours.
To David Miller, I’ve learned from you that even if two people may not have a lot in
common with each other, it doesn’t mean they can’t be best friends. You and I may not
have been friends for long, but I am glad that it was late than never. If there is one thing
we will always have in common, it is that we both think it’s more important to have fun
in life, than to worry about what people think. I leave you my eccentricity, be sure to
use it wisely! To Kendra Walker, You are someone who I can share my views with,
and instead of looking at me like I’m insane you actually get them. You are someone
who finds beauty in almost anything, and so I leave you my open mindedness. Continue
to think about things, and be willing to view things differently than others, it’s a gift!
To Dakota Hinton, You are the most laid back person I know. You’re one of the few
people I’ve ever met who could take something like the end of the world, and make it
seem like nothing is wrong. I leave you my stress and my chaos, and though I know it
may not sound good it’s a compliment, because I know you’re the one who can handle
it. To Maggie Labarge, You have a lot of compassion for others and you always know

how to find a way to help people when they need it. Whether it is bringing someone an
extra hoodie when you know someone might need it, or trying to help someone find a

more than most people. To Andrew Zitko, Even though people may think of you as
being a serious person, there’s not one of your friends who doesn’t know you have an
incredible sense of humor! You always know how to make someone laugh when they

"Don't Stop Believin'" Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train
Goin' anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train
Goin' anywhere
A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching
In the night
Streetlights, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin' somewhere in the night
Workin' hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice
Just one more time
Some will win
Some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching
In the night
Streetlights, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin' somewhere in the night
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlights, people
Don't stop believin' Hold on
Streetlights, people
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlights, people
