EMPLOYMENT OF CHLORURET OF SODA IN

BURNS.

M. LISFRANC has lately obtained suchsuccess from the use of the chloruret of sodafor the sores remaining after burns, that heprefers it to any other application. The

following case will serve to illustrate hisplan of treatment :- ’

A. Prevost, eetat. 36, was on the 13th ofAugust admitted into the Hospital, havingon .the preceding day scalded his left armwith boiling water. During the first threedays, emollient poultices were applied, buton the 16th the chloruret of soda was em-

ployed in the following manner :-the de-tached epidermis having been removed, theaffected part was covered by a fenestratedcompress, over which some lint, dipped intothe solution, was retained, by means of acircular bandage. The whole was keptmoist by repeated sponging with the fluid.M. Lisfranc observed, that in order to obtaingood effects from this method, the solu-tion must be sufficiently strong to cause asensation of heat and slight pricking, andthat it is better to make it a little too

strong than too weak, for the painful sensa-tion which in the former case is produced,subsides within a short time. In the abovecase the solution was somewhat too strong,but after 48 hours, the burnt part had per-fectly healed, and nothing but a slight red-ness remained.

TRISMUS CURED BY THE EXTERNAL APPLI-

CATION OF THE ACETATE OF MORPHIUM.

CASE 1.—Marie Ursin, ætat. 28, of a scro.fulous diathesis, was admitted on account ofa large ulcer at the external ancle of the leftleg, by which the tendon of the peroneuslongus was denuded. On the 10th of Juneit was dressed by one of the pupils in suchan awkward manner, that a violent irrita.tion of the denuded tendon, with excessivepain, accompanied by nausea and vomiting,was produced. An hour after wards, the pa-

tient felt an itching sensation along the af-fectedleg, and complained of excessive debili-ty and oppressive headach. These symptomswere soon followed by entire loss of con-sciousness, and great rigidity of the mus-cles of the jaw and neck. The mouth couldnot be opened, and its angles were drawnbackwards ; the eyes were staring ; the ab-domen very hard ; the feet spasmodicallycontracted ; the pulse frequent and hard.Twenty ounces of blood were taken fromthe arm, and 30 leeches applied to the anus,but without any effect. The warm bath foran hour; mercurial frictions; a blister onthe neck, and the use of sudorifics havingalso produced no alteration, the acetate ofmorphium was employed in the followingmanner; the fourth part of a grain wasmixed with a very small quantity of wax-plaster, and applied over the blistered part.From this time the trismus gradually sub-sided, and after repeated applications of themorphium, the rigidity of the muscles, con-traction of the leg, &c., also disappeared,and the patient ultimately recovered.CASE 2.—Marguer. Broin, of a nervous

temperament, and very weak constitution,having during five years been in the Salledes Incurables, on account of a herpetic af-fection of the extremities, was, on the 23dof July, frightened at the sight of a patientin an epileptic fit. She fainted, and when,after having recovered her senses, she wasgoing to relate what had happened, she wasseized with convulsions, which terminatedin complete tetanus. The angles of themouth were drawn towards the sides ; thejaws were firmly closed and immoveable,the head was drawn back, the neck stiff, andthe muscles of the trunk very rigid. A smallblister was put on the neck, and removedafter four hours, when the acetate of mor-

phium was applied in the manner above de-scribed. After three hours, the trismus hadconsiderably subsided, but the other symp-toms continuing unabated, the application ofthe morphium was repeated, and proved soefficacious, that after three days the patient,with the exception of great debility, hadperfectly recovered.—Lembert, sur la MethodeE2edermique.
