MissingMapsSummaryRecentdisastertrendsindicatethatpeopleareincreasinglyimpactedbymorefrequentandseveredisasters,particularlyinvulnerablecommunitiesaroundtheworld.Urbanizationhasmademattersworse;morethanhalftheworld’spopulationcurrentlylivesincitiesoftenlocatedoncoastlinesandfaultlines.Thesecitiesoftenlacksufficientinfrastructuretosupporttheinformalsettlementsthathavesprungupwithinthem.Onebillionpeople–1/7thoftheworld’spopulation–nowliveinurbanslums(UnitedNationsDevelopmentReport).Overcrowding,poorly-builtdwellings,andinsufficientinfrastructurehaslefthundredsofmillionsofpeopleincreasinglyvulnerabletodisasteranddisease.Afirststeptoassistingthesecommunitiesistoensurethatweknowwheretheyare.TheMissingMapsProjectisanunprecedentedcollaborationbetweentheAmericanRedCross,BritishRedCross,MédecinsSansFrontières-UK(MSF-UKorDoctorsWithoutBorders-UK)andtheHumanitarianOpenStreetMapTeamtomaptheworld’smostvulnerablecommunities.TheMissingMapsProjecthasbegunmappinglocationswherepartnerorganizationsarealreadyconductingdisasterpreparednessandriskreductionactivities.Asmajordisastersstrike,affectedcommunitiesmayalsobeprioritized.Digitalvolunteerengagementisvitalforthesuccessofmanyhumanitarianorganizationsaroundtheworldrespondingtodisasters.Itisimperativetohavealargerpooloftrainedvolunteersthatarereadytoassistwithlittlecoordinationwhenadisasteroccurs.
