Between 8th grade and 10th grade, alcohol use in teens was found to
increase by over 10%.
Amphetamine use increases by 3%.
The use of cocaine increases by 2%.
Overall illicit drug use roughly doubles between 8th and 10th grade.
The Effects of the Drugs
Marijuana – contains THC, which causes feelings of haziness and lightheadedness; later causes feelings of
panic and paranoia
Alcohol – five stages:
1. Euphoria: BAC 0.03 to 0.12; more daring; poor judgement.
2. Excitement: BAC 0.09 to 0.25; sleepy; uncoordinated
3. Confusion: BAC 0.18 to 0.30; slurred speech; emotional
4. Stupor: BAC 0.25 to 0.40; unresponsive; vomiting
5. Coma: BAC 0.35 to 0.50; unconscious; possible deathPrescription pills – used to feel intended effects of
the drug, when not prescribed; causes addictions
• Sudden drop in grades
• Truancy
• Loss of Interest
• Sleeping in class
• Poor work performance
• Defiant of authority
• Reduced memory and attention span
