K-Earth 101 40th Anniversary

WHEREAS, K-Earth 101 is a U.S. oldies radio station located in Los Angeles, California, broadcasting to the Greater Los Angeles Area. Its signal covers an extremely large area, due in part to height upon Mt. Wilson, and sometimes can be heard as far south as San Diego and Tijuana, as far east as Victorville, as far west as Santa Barbara and as far north as Baker, California; and

WHEREAS, KRTH first signed on August 11, 1941 with the call letters K45LA, broadcasting on 44.5 MHz FM. After World War II, when the FCC mandated the 88-108 MHz range, the station was moved to 99.7 FM, and the call letters were changed to KHJ-FM, after its then-sister AM station KHJ. In 1948, KHJ-FM moved yet again to its current broadcast frequency of 101.1 FM, today making it Los Angeles' longest running, continuous FM broadcast station; and

WHEREAS, in 1972, there was a switch to what was then called a "gold" format, featuring older hit songs from the past. At the time, this was a novel idea since most stations played current music, with a few older songs mixed in; and

WHEREAS, with the switch in format came a new moniker, 11K-Earth 101," which was named after the first 11Earth Day11 which had debuted to much fanfare the year before. The call letters were thus switched to KRTH. The jingle, "K-Earth 101" was also introduced at this time. It directly echoed the sound and notes of the jingle from KHJ-AM, the station where many of these ''gold" songs had originally been played. (KHJ-AM was still on the air at this point, but was playing current Top 40 songs.); and

WHEREAS, during the 1970s and early 1980s, K-Earth vacillated between this "gold11 format and an adult contemporary format. Current music was played, to varying degrees, throughout this period, though the focus was almost always on the past; and

WHEREAS, by 1985, K-Earth shifted to what was becoming known as an "oldies" format, adopting the motto "Classic Rock and Roll." KRTH began promoting its "Good Time Oldies" image with frequent TV ads featuring Beach Boys music, classic cars, palms, and the ever present K-Earthjingle. The songs featured were from 1955-1984, though the focus was largely on the late 1960s and early 1970s. Doo-wop, early rock, Motown, girl groups, Elvis, and the Beatles were the mainstays of the station's music mix; and

WHEREAS, during the early and mid 1980s, K-Earth 101 would even feature huge specialties, including the #1 music weekend over the Labor Day Weekend. Every L.A. #1 song would be played in chronological order (utilizing the older KHJ radio charts and other local charts) from 1955 through 1985; and

WHEREAS, the K-Earth 101 personalities over the years included Robert W. Morgan, The Real Don Steele, Gary Bryan, Jim Carson, Shotgun Tom Kelly, Christina Kelley, Charlie Van Dyke, Jhani Kaye, Brian Beirne,

Page 4: Hungarian Revolution 56th Anniversary

"Mr. Rock 'N Roll," Charlie Tuna, Joni Caryl, Bob Shannon, Roger Christian, Dave Hull "The Hullabalooler, 11

Johnny Hayes, Brother John; and

WHEREAS, K-EARTH 101 is acknowledged for its milestone of celebrating 40 years on air; and

WHEREAS, on Sunday October 21,2012, K-EARTH 101 will be holding a concert at the Gibson Amphitheatre to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. So appropriately named, the event is called "FANTASY FEST: THE CONCERT THAT NEVER WAS'' where one will be magically transported back to the 1960s ... 70s ... and 80s ... with pop culture sights and sounds that will amaze everyone that attends with tributes to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Neil Diamond and Michael Jackson:

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council hereby congratulates K-EARTH 101 on their 40th Anniversary for providing historic rock 'n' roll to all Angelinos to enjoy. Furthermore the Los Angeles City Council recognizes the contributions that K-EARTH 101 has made to the radio industry and to the City of Los Angeles. K-EARTH you are truly an angel in the City of Angels!
