September2019
Summary:
During the month of September on the Oklahoma Capitol Exterior Restoration Proj-
ect, the northwest quadrant fi ne grading and the sod installation was completed.
The only remaining site work is in the northeast quadrant, which will be done once
the tower crane is dismantled and demobilized in March 2020. The installation of
glass where mapes panels were previously installed was completed in the Governor’s
suite in mid-September. The remaining mapes panels around the building will be
swapped out with glass in the coming months before the next legislative session.
The interior fi nal fi nishes inside the tunnel will start in late October 2019. However,
the tunnel will remain closed until the new Visitor’s Center is complete.
The roofi ng replacement has progressed with both the South and North Wing’s,
fl at lock copper panels in the gutterways being soldered to completion. The South
Wing standing seam copper panels started in September and were installed from
the cornice to the skylights. The copper for the skylights and the remaining standing
seam panels will be installed over the next several weeks. The copper on and around
the skylights is very detailed and meticulous work. The standing seam panels on the
North Wing have started and will wrap up in early October. The East Wing monitor
roofi ng demo, steel modifi cations, and new crete plank substrate installation began
in August and will be completed in October with the copper roofi ng installation to
follow. The West Wing’s monitor roof scope will start in October and fi nish in Decem-
ber, with the new copper roofi ng completing in March of 2020.

Safety:The safety of our workforce and the general public during the course of
construction is the most important task that we must deliver. To that end, every
craftsmen involved with the project receives a detailed project orientation, and prior
to performing any task, the teams develop detailed task specifi c work plans. These
work plans are often called Job Site Analysis (JSA) and assist project teams with ana-
lyzing diff erent hazards associated with each work activity prior to
beginning work.

*While operating a skytrack to move bundles of crete plank material from the delivery truck to the laydown area, the end of the load clipped the tower crane test weights near the crane base and the load fell to the ground. There were no injuries.**After soldering a copper fl at lock panel, the soldering iron made contact with the hose while not in use. The heat from the soldering iron caused the hose to melt and started a small fi re on the hose. The fi re was immediately put out, there were no injuries and no property damage.

Safety Spotlight
In September on the Oklahoma Capitol Exterior Restoration project, the safe-
ty focus was on Electrocution, which is one of the Focus Four that JE Dunn is
focusing on this summer and fall. Electrocution can occur after contact with
overhead powerlines, contact with live circuits in panels, working with poorly
maintained cords and tools and lightning strikes. Electrocution accounts for
around 8.3% (or 82) deaths of the yearly average of 991 deaths related to the
Fatal Four.

WORK OBSERVED:
South wing – mockup J: Mockup was constructed and in place. Review and comments uploaded on working mockup documents to Box site.
South wing – mockup K: Pediment reglet termination at the flat lock was focus of review. Tapered fill is not as flat as it should be. Masons did not cut the recess square and instead followed the angle leg. This taper needs to be softened on the north wing. Larger lead T-cap needs to be placed at this portion of the reglet to properly seal the copper to stone. Bottom of standing seam is not set per the mockup documents which complicates the standing seam termination unnecessarily. Work to move the cleat up slope started.
South wing – mockup I: Intent to install this mockup was not fulfilled due to the weather.
ITEMS DISCUSSED:
ACTION REQUIRED:
Adjust tapered fill at north wing mockup K areas. (JE Dunn)

Mockup K intersection with Mockup I – Tapered fill at triangular transition is too abrupt and needs to be corrected on the north wing. Larger size t-cap needed to improve water resistance of transition. Cleat to

South wing – mockup I: Cleat to secure the bottom of the standing seam (part of mockup K) has been moved upslope. Panels were laid and termination of reglet receiver/closure were discussed. See mockup comments uploaded on mockup documentation to shared Box file. Ridge and reglet will be finished after panels are laid on the west slope. Panel clip installation shall not be done before seamer has been run. Panel clips shall be installed starting at the fixed zone; sliding clips installed from there up to the ridge and from there down to the gutterway.

WORK OBSERVED:
South wing – mockup O: East slope, southern most skylight. Down slope corner and up slope corner installed for review. Edge detail and up slope, down slope and side (rake) are all essentially the same. This is a proposed change from prior iterations but improves the overall performance of the corners. Butyl tape should only be used on the upslope and downslope details. Side edge should not include butyl, the top of the skylights needs to be able to move independently of the main slope panels. See mockup comments uploaded to the Box site dated 09-05-2019.
South wing – mockup N: No mockup ready. Discussed altering the side wall edge detail to match the lower skylight change and ultimately decided against it owing to the ridge detail. See mockup comments and notes uploaded to the Box site dated 09-05-2019.
East wing – monitor: Roof decking replacement is underway. About half of the length of the monitor has been replaced. Shims are necessary at locations on trusses to create a level deck. Over decking of the crete-plank panels has not started. Sidewall framing and decking work has also not started.

ITEMS DISCUSSED:
For next visit, mockup N, R, P and Q should be ready. Date to be confirmed, tentatively set for end of the month.
Modifications to steel framing at monitor corners:
ACTION REQUIRED:
Provide section of monitor cornice (two pieces) for use in preliminary discussion of setting remainder of blocking and framing. (Baker)
Correction of TPO lapping at monitor wall corners. (JE Dunn)
Monitor decking installation for vented and non-vented ridge areas need to be corrected. (JE Dunn) ITEMS TO VERIFY:
REMARKS:
Reviewed paint color (proposed change) from Tnemec to powder coat. Tnemec color selected was intended to match color of the limestone. No sample of the color was provided. Powder coat color sample labeled “Chevy white” is very white and does not meet the intent.

Monitor re-decking on east wing. Working from the platform out to the pediment.
Portion of vertical leg of eave steel framing to be cut away to allow for cornice return. Temporary
protection at this corner is improperly lapped to drain water. JE Dunn indicated corrected by the end of the day.

Rake peak detail discussed and reviewed. Vented versus unvented sections of monitor ridge discussed.
Existing concrete end walls set limits for separating combustibles used in roofing from attic spaces discussed. JE Dunn will make corrections.
