CRAB ORCHARD SPRINGS

It has been many years since theabovenamed resort has enjoyed theliberal patronage received this sum-mer

¬

and the large attendance onlyprod ¬

lioas Crab Orchard Springs is themost popular resort in the South Forsome time the people flecked to theseashore but the great expense at ¬

tached to such a trip coupled with theimportant fact that absolutely nobenefit was derived has caused thepublic to realize that a vacation toamount to anything must be spentwhere there is quiet good fare Is ser¬

tved and there is pure healthgivingwaters in abundance When the pre¬

sent manager Capt J B Willis tookcharge of Crab Orchard Springs thepremises were in a dilapidated con ¬

dition and the previous managementhad allowed the reputation of the re¬

sort to become anything but enviableHe at once set about to win back themany friends of previous years andhas today gamed a reputation tar andwide as the large crowds testifyEvery cent of profit is placed in improvement and the fact that an electric light plant a complete system ofnew and upto date sewerage will beplaced in the buildings next wintergoes to prove that the owners of theplace ate more than delighted with hiswork and realize what can oe donehere It would be impossible to find amore beautiful place or a more pleas-ant one The heat of the sun is tempered by constant breezes while count-less stately trees furnish a shade overthe entire premises The culinary department has the personal supervisionof Mrs Willis the estimable and lovely wife of the manager and few regular hotels set meals to equal thosefurnished three times a day hereEvery substantial and delicacy of theseason is served in abundance andwith a promptness and neatness whichwould do credit to the largest hotelsin the country Mrs Willis also givesher personal attention to seeing thatthe guests are well entertained andthe guests time is not allowed to dragin the least

There have been from 250 to 300guests here during our entire stay andthey are splendid people delightfulcompany and come of the very bestfamilies The evening dances are dellghtful while the card parties rowingand driving parties furnish pleasureand recreation it would be difficult tofind at even the large Eastern resortsAnother important feature is the factthat the people here are ladies andgentlemen and one is not forced to beconstantly on guard from fear of beingthrown with questionable characters

If our readers will pardon a personalreference will say we are about completely restored to good health andstrength and will return home thisweek mounting the tripod for nextissue of Tbe Record in perfect condltion for tbe many laborious duties in acountry printing office We will hereItbank our good friend Judge M DHughes for timely assistance and thesplendid editorial work he did duringour absence lie is a wheelboss at thebusiness and we know the readers enjoyed his bright spicy

J

The Harrodsburg Domocrat speak-Ing of Judge J W Hughes candidacyfor Congress has the following tosay in reference to his service anclaims to promotion at the hands oDemocracy

Earning as a cowboy on the westernplains the money with which to edu-cate

¬

himself he graduated and cameback to old Mercer taught school t

studied law and was chosen thrice topreside over the city and countycourts But at the age of twentytwo

thirty long years ago he evincedhis taste and talents for politics andbecame a champion of Democracy anda Knight of the Stareyed Goddess ofTariff Reform and such he has con ¬

tinned to this good day His first notable political speeches were made inbehalf of Samual J Tilflen in 1876when he campaigned for DemocracyAnd from that time until 1894 he nev-er

¬

slept In the latter year he wsucceeded as County Judge by HonBen F Roach and Judge Hughes re-

tired¬

to his farm sndas be throughfrom politics forever For three

years he kept out of the burlyburlybut after the defection and defeat of1896 he was urged to come out and aslist in solidifying and harmonizing theparty and he did his part nobly tothat end campaigning for Shackelford against Hindman for Goebel a-

gainst Taylor for Bryan in 1900 and1904 for Gov Beckham and the Stateticket in every race Just here it may-be well to deny a statement that hasbeen madethat Judge Hughes was adelegate and leader for Gen Wat Hardin at tbe Music Hall convention Hewas not even in Louisville during thesitting of the convention JudgeHughes has always been the warmpersonal friends and supporter of HonJames B McCreary Indeed he andCol E H Gaither have been Mr MeCrearys representatives and managersin Mercer county in every race he hasmade In Mr McCrearys fight for aseat in the Senate when he was op-

posed by William Lindsay and JohnYoung Brown Judge Hughes was one

the chief lieutenants of the distin-guished Madison county statesman atFiankfort To Congressman GeorgeG Gilbert he has been a true and triedfriend campaigning for him in hisevery race

In this long service Judge Hugheshas not been a fairweather or dressparade soldier of Democrracy He hasgone or been sent where the battlewaged the hottest and where lustyblows fell thickest No night was too

no weather too bad no journeytoo long no expeness too great whenthis old warhorse of Democracy heardtbe trumpetcall of duty In thesethirty years he has made hundreds ofspeeches for the party spent thou-sands of dollars in its behalf andtraveled miles without number tohelp its cause And in all that timehe never accepted one cent of expensemoney or reimbursement Is it not arecord to be proud of

For the past three years JuoeHughes has with his faithful asso-

ciates freely spent his time andmeans in an effort to bring about thesuccessor the Burley Tobacco GrowersAssociation in order to relieve the to-

bacco grower from the grasp of tbeTobacco Trust making speeches inthe growers behalf in imany countiesof the Burley district From itsinception he has been a director inthe company The tobacco andhemp interest is a great Interestto the people of this districtand should be aided by favorablenational legislation If elected toCongress Judge Hughes will urge thepassage of measures favorable to thetobacco and hemp growers of theState in order that they may get afairer return for their labor whichthey so justy deserve JudgeHughesIs a farmer himself and knows afarmers needs and if elected he willvote for every measure favorable tothe interests of the farmers of thisdistrict
