IBM BladeCenter Chassis Proposal
Executive Summary
Our Understanding of Your Goals
IBM® BladeCenter® is based on a relatively new technology that can help reduce the cost of ownership with a more efficient use of valuable floor space due to its modular design. Its simplified management can help speed up such tasks as deploying, re-provisioning, updating, and troubleshooting hundreds of blade servers with relative ease. All this can be done remotely with one graphical console using IBM Director systems management tools. In addition, blade servers can provide improved performance by potentially doubling current rack density, thereby permitting you to integrate your resources and share key components. This can result in cost reductions and increased availability.
Employing blade servers can help you use available rack and floor space more efficiently.
We recommend the use of blade servers for the following situations:
Space-constrained environments
WebSphere®
Linux® clusters
Web caching
Collaboration applications (Lotus® Notes®, Microsoft® Exchange and Citrix)
Dynamic Web serving - Load balancing
Firewall
Telecommunications
Active directory services
Scientific and technical computing
These applications are typically processor and memory intensive, which lend themselves to the scale out option around which the BladeCenter technology is centered.
Our Approach to Meeting Your Goals
To many IT vendors, blades are a form factor change — just another way to package a 2- or 4-socket server. IBM’s innovative approach to blade design delivers a solution that’s easier to manage, uses less power, produces significantly less heat, has longer life spans, and is easy to set up and scale.

IBM BladeCenter Chassis Proposal
Driving innovation
IBM continues to build on its reputation for helping customers find innovative IT solutions with BladeCenter H, which delivers even more capabilities to the BladeCenter family. The 9U chassis provides the standard BladeCenter functionalities with the added performance of high-speed I/O and the fastest blades. Other highlights include:
High-speed fabric with eight data channels to every blade, four of which can be 10 Gb
Flexible, scalable design so the system can grow as your business grows
Sustainable platform life for enhanced investment protection
Multi-Switch Interconnect Module for additional connectivity to blade servers
Light path diagnostics for fast, simple, accurate troubleshooting to help guard against system downtime
BladeCenter H also drives innovation through its open architecture, supporting industry-standard I/O switches from Cisco, Brocade and others, so organizations have more choice and flexibility when it comes to their IT environment. Likewise, IBM’s affiliation with blade.org helps open the architecture even more by supporting an online, collaborative environment to promote advances in technology solutions.
Managing growth, minimizing risk
With its unsurpassed architecture, BladeCenter H efficiently integrates servers, storage, networking, I/O and applications, enabling organizations to build flexible IT infrastructures using common building blocks. This helps customers control costs by protecting their investments—and with a powerful set of tools that are open and equally integrated, organizations can quickly deploy and easily manage their systems.
As a rack-dense, space-saving chassis, BladeCenter H provides a superior foundation for virtualization. And in a virtualized environment, organizations can run a more flexible, better utilized and potentially more cost-effective IT infrastructure with a common management construct.
Easy and energy-efficient
Because BladeCenter H is up to 10% more energy efficient than the HP C-class chassis1, organizations know they’re making the right choice when it comes to using less power. Innovative tools such as IBM Systems Director Active Energy ManagerTM track power usage so organizations can better manage energy and help prevent outages. And not only does BladeCenter H help organizations go green and save, it also makes it easy to deploy, integrate and manage applications—so customers can focus on their business and not on their IT.
IBM: The right choice
As an industry leader in innovative IT systems, IBM delivers yet another important solution for the IT environment. BladeCenter H is the ideal chassis for running the

This Ethernet Switch Module delivers port flexibility, efficient traffic management, increased uplink bandwidth, and strong Ethernet switching price/performance.
The BNT 1/10Gb Uplink Ethernet Switch Module offers the following benefits:
All 1 Gb and 10 Gb uplink ports can be active at the same time.

IBM BladeCenter Chassis Proposal
The switch consumes only 40 Watts, which is ideal for clients with power limitations or for those who simply want to reduce operating cost and be more environmentally friendly.
It has a large L2 forwarding table (16K), which allows the switch to accommodate a larger flat network with minimum aging activity.
Advanced L3 functions, such as OSPF and BGP, allow the switch to integrate seamlessly into a large routed network environment.
L3 functions allow the switch to segregate traffic into segments to improve latency and security within each segment of the network.
SmartConnect helps dramatically reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) that is associated with blade servers by delivering VMready network virtualization (NMotion), stacking, and simplifying administrative tasks such as deployment, control, and policy administration.
Internal ports:
– 14 internal full-duplex Gigabit ports, one connected to each of the blade servers
– Two internal full-duplex 10/100 Mbps ports connected to the management module
External ports:
– Three slots for 10 Gb Ethernet SFP+ transceivers (support for 10GBASE-SR or 10GBASE-LR) or SFP+ copper direct-attach cables (DAC); SFP+ modules are optional
– Six 10/100/1000 1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet ports with RJ-45 connectors
– One RS-232 serial port that provides an additional means to install software and configure the switch module
