Man International Business School (The IBS).
The IBS was the first institution specifically established to promote and deliverHigher Education on the Isle of Man and lends itself perfectly to being a centrefor undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, professional qualifications andbusiness consultancy services.
Conveniently located just minutes from the centre of the Islands capital and itsairport, the peaceful surroundings of The Nunnery Estate and spacious, comfortableinterior of The Nunnery mansion house make The IBS a unique environmentideally suited to higher learning and training.

About The IBS
The Isle of Man International Business School (The IBS) is a small, specialist institutionin a leading financial jurisdiction and was established in 1999 as the first HigherEducation Institution on the Isle of Man. Located in a 19th century mansion houseand situated within the magnificent Nunnery Estate, The IBS offers a numberof business-related degree programmes, professional qualifications, short coursesand business consultancy services.
The IBS has been part of the Isle of Man Department of Education since April 2005and will play an important role in the future of Higher Education on the Island.
Our StudentsWe are a small, but growing, institution with approximately 130 students on bothpart-time and full-time programmes. We have a small proportion of internationalstudents, however the majority of our students are from the Isle of Man. Thereis no such thing as a typical student at The IBS since we attract people at verydifferent stages of their lives and careers.
Every year we attract a proportion of the Islands secondary school leavers. TheIsle of Man International Business School is one of the most popular choices forManx School leavers. We are also pleased to see an increasing number of maturestudents (aged 21+) registering with us too.
Part time, mature students on our undergraduate programmes are able to benefitfrom being able to juggle their studies around work and family life commitments;whilst our postgraduate programmes justifiably attract high achievers from theworld of business, some local and some international.
All of our students have chosen the Isle of Man International Business School dueto its high academic standards, the excellent level of student support on offerand the benefits of networking with other like-minded professionals.
Our Graduates and AlumniThe number of IBS graduates is constantly growing as students complete theirqualifications. Every year we hold an impressive Graduation Ceremony at StGermans Cathedral in Peel where we celebrate our students successes.
An IBS graduate is a desirable recruit for many of the Islands top companies. AnIBS student has a strong work ethic, prestigious qualifications in vocational businessdisciplines and in many cases, relevant and useful work experience gained throughour work placement scheme.Many of our graduates choose to stay on the Island and impart their knowledgein to the local business community. IBS graduates are currently working in a widerange of sectors and companies including Manx Telecom, HSBC, Deloitte, theDepartment of Tourism and Isle of Man Film.

Studying at The IBS

Small class sizes, easy access to tutors and high levels of support make studyingat The IBS an unique experience...
The Academic YearWhether you are registered on an academic or a professional programme, the
teaching year is split into two, 15-week semesters. These run between September/December and January/May. During semester time you will be expected to attendlectures and seminars, the number and frequency of which will depend on theprogramme (see individual programme pages for further details).
Small ClassesOur class sizes are much smaller than you would expect to find at a UK university.We offer a very personalised and supportive environment where our studentshave constant access to our academic staff - all experienced industry specialistswith experience of teaching in prestigious higher education institutions worldwide.
Learning ResourcesThroughout higher and professional education, much research is now conductedvia the Internet and by consulting electronic papers and journals. We have twoI.T. suites and broadband internet access throughout, for our students to use.Students on our degree programmes are given access to the online learningresources of Liverpool John Moores University (our academic partner), and canfreely access a wide range of databases and information sources, online dataservices and the web.
We also have a hard copy library, which contains copies of all the core text booksrequired for the programmes taught at the school. Text books may even beprovided to individual students on some programmes and our students are alsoentitled to use the library facilities at the Isle of Man College.
Homestay AccommodationWe do not currently offer student accommodation, but instead we are able toput international students in contact with local families or individuals who areprepared to offer Homestay accommodation.
Student SupportWe operate a personal tutor system for academic support and a Student LiaisonOfficer for students to contact for advice on any other personal matters. Ourstudents can also contact the Student Welfare Officers at the Isle of Man College.

Student Finance

Tuition fees apply to the majority of programmes offered at The IBS, but dependingon your individual circumstances, there may be financial assistance available fromone or more sources:
If you are self-funding your chosen programme then it is possible to payyearly fees by instalments in September, December and May.
If you have been resident in the Isle of Man for a minimum of 3 years priorto the start of a degree programme at The IBS, you may be eligible for financialsupport from the Isle of Man Department of Education, Student AwardsSection.
The Isle of Man Department of Trade and Industry offers a number of grantsand financial support to businesses and individuals who are paying forvocational training. Look out for the DTI logo on our Professional and CorporateProgrammes pages for courses that may be financially supported by the DTI.
Tax relief may be available from the Isle of Man Government Income Tax
Division if you pay for your own vocational training.

Degree Programmes
The Isle of Man International Business School (The IBS) currently offers four degreeprogrammes, all of which are franchised from and validated by Liverpool JohnMoores University (www.ljmu.ac.uk), our academic partner.
The IBS offers an undergraduate degree in either Business Studies or BusinessManagement which are suitable for school/college leavers or mature students
without a first degree. We also offer two postgraduate degrees; an ExecutiveMBA programme and a Masters in International Banking and Finance for moremature people who have a first degree and/or relevant work experience.

Three Options1. The Work Placement Option (our most popular degree):
Our full-time Business Studies degree is a four-year sandwich programmein which Year 3 is spent in a fully paid, 48-week work placement. In todayshighly competitive graduate jobs market, this real-world experience is
invaluable for your C.V. Whats more, as well as giving you the edge in thejobs market, you can also enhance your student bank-balance (by up to21,000), and earn yourself the prestigious City and Guilds Licentiateship- another excellent addition to your C.V. This is an internationally-recognisedqualification which demonstrates that you have achieved high levels ofcompetence in a work placement.
2. The Fast Track Option:If you dont need work experience, then our full-time Business Managementdegree is an excellent way to accelerate your career in management. Thisoption, which covers the same academic content as options 1 and 3, will
take you just three years.
3. The Keep Your Day Job Option:Alternatively, if youre already on the career ladder and would like to keepyour day job, you can study for our Business Studies degree part-time - byattending evening classes over four to six years. You could even attend someof the daytime modules that are convenient to you in order to complete thisqualification more quickly!

Programme OverviewThe Business Studies/ Business Management programmes will help you to developa broad competence in the management of people, money, markets and products this is then deepened through your own choices and study of a specialist area.You will also develop essential business skills such as data analysis, planning,

Content + Assessment
Page 15 shows a list of the different modules that comprise our Undergraduateprogrammes.
Like most modern degrees, these programmes include core modules, whicheveryone must complete, and optional modules which enable you to tailor yourdegree to suit your personal preferences and career ambitions.
Modules, worth 12 or 24 credits each, are taught via lectures/seminars, supportedthrough tutorials, and assessed via individual/group assignments, presentations,examinations and a dissertation.
You gain credits for each module successfully completed and, depending on how
many credits you have earned when you exit your programme, you may graduatewith the full BA (Hons) Degree (360 credits), or alternatively a Certificate or Diplomain Higher Education in Business Studies or Business Management (120 or 240credits respectively).

Entry RequirementsIt is not necessary for you to have studied Business Studies at GCSE or A Level.

* 240+ UCAS points (at least 160 must be at A Level)

Content + Assessment* This programme comprises eight modules (seven compulsory and one
elective) and a research-based dissertation.
* You will earn 15 credits for each module successfully completed and anadditional 60 credits on completion of your dissertation (of approximately
20,000 words).
* You will be assessed via a wide range of methods in order to develop yourabilities and skills. Such methods will include management reports, casestudies, group activities, presentations, time-constrained assessments anda dissertation.
* You will graduate with the MBA in Executive Leadership when you gain a totalof 180 credits. Alternatively, if you exit the programme with just 60 or 120credits, you will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate or the PostgraduateDiploma in Business Administration respectively.
Your ProspectsBy gaining an MBA you will not only obtain a valuable business qualification, youwill also learn general business management skills, improve your job opportunities(and potential future salary) and increase your self-confidence.
Entry RequirementsThe merits and motivations of each applicant will be considered individually,although the ability for you to benefit from and contribute to the programme isessential. For this we require:
* A degree or equivalent professional qualification plus at least three yearsappropriate work experience, or
* Substantial managerial experience in absence of formal qualifications.

Structure and Assessment This programme comprises eight compulsory modules and a research-based
dissertation.
You will be assessed via a wide range of methods in order to develop yourabilities and skills.
You will earn 15 credits for each module successfully completed and anadditional 60 credits on completion of your dissertation (of approximately20,000 words).
The dissertation can be directly applied to a work-based issue.
You will graduate with the MSc in International Banking and Finance when
you gain a total of 180 credits. Alternatively, if you exit the programme withjust 60 or 120 credits you will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate orthe Postgraduate Diploma in International Banking and Finance respectively.

Our Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmesare designed for those who want to aim even higher. You will work independentlybut with competent supervision on your thesis. You will be part of The IBSs researchcommunity and join our regular research workshops.

The research degree is awarded solely on the basis of a thesis, the research topichaving been mutually agreed between yourself and your supervisors. In additionyou would attend a research methods training.
You would be allocated a team of two to three academic supervisors but as amember of our academic community you would also benefit from presentingyour ideas to other colleagues. To develop both, your research ideas and yourprofessional skills, you will be able to engage in a variety of activities, includingseminars, workshops and conferences.

Mode of Entry
The normal mode of entry for PhD students is to register for an MPhil and transferto the PhD programme within 12 to 15 months (24 to 30 months for part-timestudents), after providing evidence of satisfactory progress. For this, you wouldprepare a progress report of approximately 3,000 to 4,500 words. If you wish to
graduate with the MPhil degree, you will write a thesis not exceeding 40,000words.
Very occasionally students may register directly for a PhD if they hold an appropriateMaster's degree, or a good honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriatediscipline and appropriate research or professional experience at postgraduatelevel that has resulted in published work, written reports or other appropriateevidence of accomplishment.
Periods of Study
Students may study for an MPhil and PhD on a full-time or part-time basis.
The minimum time periods for study are as follows:

Professional Qualifications
In addition to offering a number of academic degree programmes, The IBS alsolends itself perfectly to being a centre for high-level professional qualificationsand training.
There are two types of professional programme that we currently offer:
1. Firstly, there are those that are delivered and assessed by our own staff - such
as qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the CharteredManagement Institute.
2. Secondly, there are programmes that are delivered by external parties. Forthese programmes, external training providers simply hire rooms from usand periodically send staff across to the Island to deliver training.
CMI and CIM programmes are delivered as Part Day Release. This means that youwill need to arrange one afternoon per week off work during term times. Typicallythe programmes will run between 1pm and 8pm.
Whichever type of professional programme you opt for, you can be assured thatThe IBS will provide peaceful surroundings and spacious, comfortable facilities inorder that your student experience is a positive one.
The Isle of Man Department of Trade and Industry has agreed to offer supportto local students of IBS professional programmes (CIM & CMI). This can be up to50% of the published fees. This support should be applied for directly with theDTI and usually consists of a reimbursement on production of a fees paid receipt.

environment. The Qualification is ideal for junior marketers, those working inmarketing support roles (like personal assistants); or if marketing plays some partin your current job description.This qualification is aimed at those who are working in supporting marketing roles,usually within the marketing function, but also targets individuals in more seniorroles, particularly in SMEs, where marketing is only part of what they do. He established the USA operation of a UK Consulting Practice in 1994 and spent8 years in America developing and managing large-scale supply chain and changemanagement projects for technology, pharmaceutical and manufacturingorganisations such as Microsoft, Dell and Pfizer.
Peter has delivered many of IBS Consultings Business Improvement Workshopsto a number of leading multinational companies including Microsoft, Pfizer,Eli Lilly, Avery Dennison and Rolls Royce. On the Isle of Man, Peter has so far workedon projects for the Isle of Man Department of Trade and Industry, Police andISD/Treasury; Royal Skandia and Clerical Medical.
Peter has a BSc in Manufacturing Engineering and an MBA from ManchesterBusiness School.

What is CPD?CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development, a concept which emphasises
lifelong learning. It proposes that learning is an essential part of professional life.
CPD is about updating and enhancing your knowledge, your skills and competences,
throughout your working life - to help you progress in your career and realise your
full potential.
Many professional bodies, like the Chartered Management Institute, require that
their members undertake a certain number of hours of CPD in order to keep their
status as Chartered Managers, Chartered Marketers, Chartered Accountants etc.
This said, CPD is much broader than attending a formal training course or event
and can include seminars, distance learning, reading, teaching and even accepting
new roles and responsibilities at work.
What CPD does the Business School offer?Studying for a degree or professional qualification, or attending a short course or
workshop, at the Isle of Man International Business School, can all count towardsan individuals CPD but in addition to this, we also offer an ongoing programme
of bite-size, lunchtime CPD seminars.
Our one-hour seminars, on a variety of interesting and motivating subjects, are
a convenient way to contribute to the Continuing Professional Development
requirements of members of the Chartered Management Institute, and other
professional bodies, on the Isle of Man.
Open to all Island residents (whether you belong to a professional body or not),
each lunchtime seminar costs 15 to attend, including a buffet lunch, which is
provided between 12.30pm and 12.45pm, with the seminars starting promptly
at 12.45pm and finishing at 1.45pm.
All delegates are given a pack on arrival - including handouts of the presentation
and a CPD certificate to demonstrate that youve completed one hour of
continuing professional development.
To assure you of the quality of our seminars, the content and learning outcomes
of all CPD presentations at The IBS are mapped against the National Occupational
Standards developed by the Management Standards Centre - the Government-
recognised standards-setting body for the areas of management and leadership.
