The Bottega family has taken South African wine destinations to new
heights with the Idiom Restaurant & Wine Tasting Centre at the home of
their awardwinning Idiom wines.
The mountainous location, which is situated on the outskirts of Somerset
West near Sir Lowry’s Pass, boasts breathtaking views of the Helderberg
basin and the Cape Peninsula.
With scenic views and an iconic location, Idiom’s building had a lot to live
up to – and architect Thomas Leach ensured that it did. Bringing to life the
visions of Idiom owner Alberto Bottega and his son, Roberto, Leach
created a visual masterpiece to match Idiom’s granitetextured setting.
Combining the classic vineyard manor feel with an impactful modern edge,
the property fuses style with practicality.
“It fuses Old World, classicallystyled Roman arches and stone porticos
with a New World timber pavilion and concrete winetasting cube to impart
a contemporary yet timeless feel,” says Leach.
With 360° views of Idiom’s vineyards, arches made from local stone
quarried on the farm and classic wooden beams, the structure is a modern
ode to nature.
“The concept at Idiom was to achieve a dialogue between the modern and
traditional, bringing together our family’s South African and Italian
heritage,” says Roberto Bottega. “The arched porticos and stone viewing
tower offer subtle reminders of our Italian heritage, while the concrete,
glass and timber structure reflect our South African roots. The fusion of
styles means that the building constantly surprises and looks different from
every angle.”
