the Subject• Available semantic options: HUM, METO, PERS
•Different genres pose different challenges:
• Fantasy: does dwarf count as human? How about an elf?
• Children’s books: Ferdynand Wspaniały
• Poetry: Osiełek Porfirion
• Solution: PERS (personification) added as an option
• Subject competence
• competence of nonovert (in our coding) subjects
• Far-from-obvious subject constructions
•Udało mu się pomyśleć
![Page 13: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Nominative (NOM) vs. dative (DAT) construction in the subject
position
• (2) a. Wymyślił rozwiązanie.
• b. Udało mu się wymyślić rozwiązanie.
• Control vs. loss of control of an action
• Voluntary vs. involuntary action
• Intended vs. non-intended result (Dąbrowska 1997; Wierzbicka 1986)
• Cf. Jodłowski 1971: wymyślić as Subject

Subject visibility•Code the sentence subject or the verb
subject? What if the verb is infinitive?• Ale rzeczywiście trudno by było wymyślić fakty, które
mi się w życiu zdarzyły.
•When is the subject visible to the verb?
• In the same sentence• Już się domyślam - mówiła w parę minut później
Barbara. - I mówię ci, że to ten półgłówek.
• If it’s in the preceding sentence?• Wtedy to już nie wiem. Będziemy po prostu na
głowie chodzić - ponuro przepowiedział Jaś. Potem obiecał braciom, że coś obmyśli .
• If it’s more than one sentence away? If so, how far back?• W tym momencie Paragon znieruchomiał i zrobił
najgłupszą gębę w swoim życiu. Na peronie zobaczył właśnie Antoniusza we własnej osobie. "O duchu mowa, a duch tu!" - pomyślał
![Page 15: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Object semantics - clause
• Available options for ObjClause:• ACCOM - Accomplishment,
• ACH - Achievement,
• ST - State,
• ACT - Activity,
• HYPO - Hypothetical
• Problem sentences:• Siły pulsują w narodzie
• ObjACT or ObjST?
• Aż strach pomyśleć co by było gdyby kiedyś drzwi otworzyła mi drzwi
• ObjACT or ObjHYPO

• ObjACH?
![Page 16: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Object continued
•Tricky object constructions• Jak stary kawaleryjski koń, który usłyszał
trąbkę - pomyślał o sobie Zygmunt z pełnym litości pobłażaniem.
•Semantics of NPs used in metonymic contexts•Pomyśl o szkłach kontaktowych albo
okularach, bezustanne mrużenie oczu może doprowadzić do pogłębienia się zmarszczek wokół nich
•ObjCONCR, ObjABSTR or ObjACT?
•Pomyśl o świątecznych prezentach
•ObjACT or ObjCONCR? -decision based on the context!
![Page 17: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
• CONTR [Contrast]: jednak,
• HYPO (zapewnie, chyba, może, na pewno),
• LOC
• what about: pomyślał idąc?
• If there is more than one adv. the sentence needs to be coded twice!
• Pomyśl teraz dobrze
• It is not feasible to have a separate category for every variation
![Page 18: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Abstract vs. concrete
•how to define abstract vs. concrete•“Pomyśl o świątecznych prezentach.”
•abstract is a broad category!•“Przemyśliwać nad sposobami otrucia żony”
•“Pomyśl o niebieskich migdałach”
•“A jeśli klient wymyśli swoją własną trasę, to na pewną nią pojedzie.”
•“Pomyślał o swoich 44 latach”
•should we introduce sub-categories of abstract?
![Page 19: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

Cognitive Grammar (CG) Cognitive Grammar (CG) assumptions:assumptions:
Construal vs. codingConstrual vs. coding• the unpredictability of grammar arises from the
objectivist approach to semantics
• cognitive grammar finds “semantic value in every one of its uses” (Langacker 1991: 294)
• event can be construed in many ways; a number of lexical items and grammatical constructions can be used to convey these construals
• “construal is partly a matter of linguistic convention and partly of the speaker’s communicative objectives” (Dąbrowska 1997: 115):
• (1) a. Peter has bought a red bike from his friend Tom.
• b. His friend Tom has sold Peter a red bike.
• c. A red bike has been sold to Peter (by Tom).
• d. *Peter has been bought a bike from Tom.
![Page 28: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
CG assumptions about construalsCG assumptions about construals
• “every verb defines a distinct set of participant roles that reflects its own unique semantic properties” (Langacker 1991: 284)
• characteristics of the entities designated to interact with one another in the relations contribute to the construal of the event
• case markers depicting the relationships between the participants involved in the processes are semantically motivated
• the meaning assigned by the verbs is distributed across the sentence, which is concordant with the Langackerian conceptualisation of the whole event, and also with the theory of ‘distributed semantics’ by Shina and Kuteva (1995).
![Page 29: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
CG assumptions:CG assumptions:Coding by means of casesCoding by means of cases
•one case may be used to convey quite a number of relationships between or among participants of an event
•different cases may represent the same or similar construals, each being motivated semantically
•Case bears objective as well as subjective meaning:
it refers to the role of a substantive
it encodes the speaker’s interpretation of that role
![Page 30: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Object type continuum
![Page 31: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Complement semantics
• direct speech – mental activity is explicit
• clausal complements – reflect complex ideas stored in mind
• o + LOC – the mental experience is not directly focused on the object of thinking but rather it takes an indefinite constant circular movement round the focal point (Radden and DIrven 2007)
• nad + INSTR – ‘proximate instrumental’ – the instrumental entity is not affected by the action; it is not the goal of the action, but serves to manifest it (Janda 1993)
• ACC – the entity is created or affected by the action (Janda 1993)
• GEN – conceptualisation of a goal (Rudzka-Ostyn 2000)
• DAT – sobie, one emphasises the privacy of the experiencer’s thought and his or her awareness of the mental process (Dąbrowska 1997).
![Page 32: Ifa fri lecture](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062313/558893dbd8b42a7e2d8b4702/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Prefix semantics• do – construes a delimiting point, not exactly a natural
termination point but specifying a goal/result
• po – construes a movement along a path with no definite point
• prze – construes a movement between a TR and LM, metaphorically extended to temporal relations; the whole trajectory is in focus; in temporal relations – the duration or each and every element of an action
• roz – the TR and LM are considered as one entity here; what is located at one point becomes dispersed in different directions
• na – indicates an intensity of an action; expresses a cumulative process
• wy – construes a path out of a container, portrays the punctual nature of a termination point
• (Przybylska 2006; Piernikarski 1975; Śmiech 1986)
