Menurut Craig (1991), pemadatan tanah adalah proses naiknya kerapatan tanah dengan memperkecil jarak
antarpartikel sehingga ter jadi reduksi udara. Uji l aboratorium dikembangkan oleh R.R. Proctor tahun 1920-an dan
berikut elemen-elemen uji pemadatan standar tersebut pada tabel 2.11. Untuk keperluan subgrade jalan digunakan
nilai CBR sebagai indikator. Nilai CBR adala h perbandingan antara kekuatan sampel tanah dengan kepadatan tertentu
dan kadar air tertentu terhadap kekuatan batu pecah bergradasi rapat sebagai material dengan nilai CBR = 100. Untuk
mencari nilai CBR dipakai rumus:

LRC = faktor kalibrasi
Semakin besar nilai CBR berarti kemampuan tanah untuk menahan lalu lintas di atasnya semakin besar. Berikut
adalah kategori nilai CBR terhadap kekuatan subgrade jalan yang d iklasifikasikan dalam Guide Highways
Maintenance (2000) pada tabel 2.13.
