90th Anniversary of Ferdinand Tavadze(1912–1992)$

Professor Ferdinand N. Tavadze for many years wasa director of the Institute of Metallurgy, GeorgianAcademy of Sciences and head of the Laboratory ofMaterials Science of the Institute. At the TechnicalUniversity of Georgia he headed the Department ofTechnology of Metals and Metals Science. He was theauthor of numerous patents, books, and paperspublished in the former USSR and abroad. His workwas closely connected with the development of newrefractory materials, corrosion-resistant, cryogenic, andboron- and chromium steels and alloys. Among thesubjects he was interested in were multicomponentequilibrium diagrams, theory of alloys, processes ofcorrosion and metal protection, melting, and continuouscasting of metals. Since 1960, Ferdinand Tavadzeactively participated in the study of boron and boroncompounds. The Laboratory of Boron, its alloys andcompounds, was founded at the Institute of Metallurgy

and soon became one of the centers for producingand investigating high-purity crystalline boron.Ferdinand Tavadze chaired the International Sympo-siums on Boron held in 1972 and 1984 in Tbilisi andpresided over the scientific committee in 1987 inDuisburg.Ferdinand Tavadze was distinguished among his

colleagues and friends for his remarkable personalfeatures such as simplicity, modesty, kindness, andgood sense of humor. Having great erudition andcapacity for work, he was a man of enviable intuitionand of special talent for the perception of new ideas.Ferdinand Tavadze’s 90th anniversary was widelycommemorated by the scientific society of Georgiaand other republics of the former SU. His life, activities,and memories of him were gathered and publishedin the book In the World of Metals with Ferdinand

Tavadze.
