TECHNICALDATA
Whenswitchedon,acapacitorcanfunctionasashort-circuitelement. Thecapacitor inrushorchargingcurrentmagnitudedepends on AC voltage at turn-on and on the impedance ofconnectioncablesandapowersupplytransformer.
In case of individual capacitor load, charging current peaksthat are 30-time greater than rated capacitor current canoccur.Incaseofamulti-stagecapacitortheinrushcurrentcanexceed180-timeratedcapacitorcurrent.
Such a strong current can flow through a contactor from thebeginning when inrush current occurs from power supplynetworkand thecapacitor isalreadyconnected.Such inrushcurrent is undesirable since main contacts of standard dutycontactorsarelikelytoweld.
Anewcapacitordutycontactorisdesignedtomeettherequire-mentsofcapacitordutyapplications.Contactorsarefittedwitha block of three auxiliary contacts connected in series withsix quick discharge damping resistors, two per each phase.Peakcurrentislimitedtothevaluewithinthecontactormakingcapacity.
Three-pole contactors from 10 kVAr to 60 kVAr are availableinsevenratingscomplyingwiththeIEC60070andIEC60830standards.
