Oil Ministry okays stake dilution in ONGC, IOC (Positive) The petroleum ministry has approved part-sale of government’s stake in Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), a move that could fetch the government over Rs 240bn this financial year. Renuka sugars, HPCL plan ethanol unit in Maharashtra (Positive for Renuka Sugars) Shree Renuka Sugars is looking to set up an integrated sugar-cum-ethanol plant with oil marketing company Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) in Maharashtra. This would be the first such tie-up between a sugar and a petroleum company. Rel Infratel, GTL call off merger deal (Negative) Reliance Infratel and GTL Infrastructure have abandoned plans to combine their tower operations in a deal that was valued at $11 bn, due to valuation disputes, raising questions over parent company Reliance Communications’ (RCOM) plans to cut debt and raise money by issuing shares. PVR to sell Phoenix Mills multiplex for 1000 mn PVR has put its multiplex at Phoenix Mill mall in central Mumbai on the block with a price tag of 800-1000 mn.Phoenix, the multiplex, has a sprawling 65,000 square feet of area. It is the only property that the theatre chain owns. Tata Steel raises product prices by 1,000 a tonne (Positive) Tata Steel has raised the prices of flat products by about 1,000 a tonne on account of a pickup in demand and the prevailing market trend.The company has raised its flat product prices by up to 4% with effect from September 3. ABN to renew $1bn IT outsourcing deals (Positive) ABN Amro is set to renew its contracts for managing the bank’s software applications and computer hardware systems with IBM, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys Technologies. The contract renewal could potentially bring outsourcing projects worth $1 bn to India over the next five years. Aurobindo in supply pact with AstraZeneca (Positive) Aurobindo Pharma Limited has entered into licensing and supply agreements with AstraZeneca, to supply finished dosage and sterile products to emerging markets. The agreement will support AstraZeneca’s investment in branded generics sold in emerging markets. These products fall under a broad range of therapeutic segments such as anti-infective, cardiovascular system (CVS) and central nervous system (CNS). Firstsource inks outsourcing deal with Axis Bank- (Positive) Firstsource Solutions, a business process outsourcing company, has signed a five-year outsourcing agreement with Axis Bank.As part of the agreement, Firstsource will offer customer contact services (voice, email and web chat) to retail customers of Axis Bank.

Macro Economic and Other News International News Direct tax collections rise 13.9% in April-August Net direct tax collections during April-August registered a growth of 13.91%, at Rs 1,001.12bn, compared with Rs 878.88bn in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. This was mainly attributed to the growth in revenue receipts from the corporate sector. Ocean signals indicate another weak monsoon phase Ocean signals indicate that the monsoon may be going into a weak phase from around the weekend. But it is the weak monsoon phase that paradoxically brings rains to East and Northeast India, which have been witnessing below normal rains right through the season.

UK new car registration slips The UK new car registration for the month of August came in at -17.5% y-o-y as compared to the previous month figure of -13.2%. SMMT have warned that the market would remain tough for the rest of the year but still expects more than two million new cars to be sold in 2010. Obama announces new stimulus package US President Barrack Obama announced a new infrastructure stimulus package worth US$ 50 billion. This newest stimulus will call for a six-year investment period and will require congressional approval. The new stimulus package aims to create jobs over the long-term by rebuilding 150,000 miles of roads, 4,000 miles of rail, and 150 miles of airport runways.
