DefinitionsWhat do we mean by industrialised?
• Increased use of component parts.• Modular dimensioning.• Combined function of materials and equipment.• Improved quality control.• Improved physical characteristics• Improved physical characteristics.• Reduced number of on-site necessary skills.• Improved material and component handling.p p g• Efficient construction processes.
DefinitionsWhat do we mean by integrated?
• Multi-functional components.• Cross-system functionality.• Lifecycle support.• Combination of technologies.
Pl ggable components and s stem config ration• Pluggable components and system configuration.
DefinitionsWhat do we mean by intelligent?
• Intelligence depends on the type of the industrialised component (e.g. façade component, pathway component, etc.). Some features are:
• Dynamic behaviour in response to external control conditions (natural light heat and ventilation conditions internal heat(natural light, heat and ventilation conditions, internal heat gains).
• Multi-functional integrated modules.• Communication: Allows to improve the overall performance of
the building in an integrated way.• Pluggable components system configuration & smart fittings• Pluggable components, system configuration & smart fittings.

Outlook for the industryWhat to expect? … from the tangible I3CON results:
• Façade elements: under performance tests• EC glazing: Potential use in building and other sectors
W i Cl k d• Water saving system: Close to market ready. • Multi-Service Trunking System: Challenge of mass
production still to be solved Ease of maintenance andproduction still to be solved. Ease of maintenance and durability to be studied. Depending on services integrated might, collide with existing regulations.g g , g g
• Geothermoshield: Conceptual status concluded, patent in preparation.
Outlook for the industryGeneral conclusions… the Achilles heel for the construction industry is that our
h i i l l l l d i d dprocess chain is only loosely coupled, not integrated and labour intensive.
… difficulties exist in the practical implementation of innovation, as different interests of the stakeholders collide ,and the industry tradition is conservative.
th f b d t bi d th i d t t… the performance-based concept binds the industry to think what the owner / consumer needs first, then the builder and manufacturerbuilder and manufacturer.
Outlook for the industryGeneral conclusions…… perspective of time is needed for an evolving final
d h i bj h f d l iproduct that is subject to changes of use and evolving space concepts.
… in the same way I3 Construction needs a multidisciplinary approach (designers, architects, builders, p y pp ( g , , ,engineers, owners, users, supplier etc. ) where building information is fed and shared simultaneously by building t k h ldstakeholders
