Purpose of Integrated IIPurpose of Integrated II

• To assist our weaker science students master the high school science benchmarks

• To help as many of our struggling science students pass the FCAT (to reach proficiency)

Our students need to score in Achievement

Level 3 or better (to be considered proficient)

324 points represents the lowest Level 3 score

which equates to a 65%

Integrated II CurriculumIntegrated II Curriculum

• Our Integrated II curriculum is specifically designed to cover the most important high school science benchmarks . The core Integrated II curriculum is based around the 17 annually assessed science benchmarks.

Science FCAT Facts Science FCAT Facts • 17 Annually Assessed benchmarks (AA), the other

remaining benchmarks are “Content Sampled” (CS)– suppose to be assessed at least once every three years.

• 60% - 70% of the Grade 11 FCAT Science test is based upon the 17 AA benchmarks.

• FCAT test questions are grouped into 4 “Clusters". Each Cluster is composed of 1 – 3 Strands. There are 2-5 (AA) Benchmarks per Cluster.

• FCAT sub scores are reported by Cluster. Each Cluster represents 25% of the student‘s total points.

• Total points possible on FCAT is 500.• Students automatically receive 100

points for writing their name on the test

• The four performance tasks account for 20% of the 500 points possible (approximately 80 points)

Performance Task Analysis SheetPerformance Task Analysis Sheet

• Review Your schools performance task data sheet (in folder)

• Compare 2008 with 2007• Did your average improve or

decline?

What can we do to help our What can we do to help our students with their performance students with their performance

tasks??????????tasks??????????

• Practice, practice, practice!!!!!• Tell students that can receive partial credit for

answers (do not leave it blank)• Tell students that 4 questions are worth 80

points (20% of the test)• You need to have your students answer a

performance task question each and every week.

• Which benchmarks should you focus on?

Page 19: Integrated II Workshop August 28, 2008. Purpose of Integrated II To assist our weaker science students master the high school science benchmarks To help

Things to do!Things to do!

• Give students practice using what they know (explain, draw conclusions, cite evidence, and synthesize) to answer a variety of short and extended response questions.

• Use open-ended questions that require students to explain their answers orally, through diagrams, and in writing.

• Teach them that “technical writing” is different than the style used on FCAT Writing Plus.

General Specifications for General Specifications for Science FCATScience FCAT

• Test questions can be written to measure one benchmark or a combination of benchmarks

• Test questions are written with reading level approximately one grade level below the grade level of the test

• Some test questions may require the student to apply previously acquired scientific knowledge from lower grade levels

Page 25: Integrated II Workshop August 28, 2008. Purpose of Integrated II To assist our weaker science students master the high school science benchmarks To help

General Specifications for General Specifications for Science FCATScience FCAT

• Some test questions will include experimental data, processes, or information for students to analyze in their response

• Test questions will be designed to present information through written text and/or through visual material, such as graphs, tables, diagrams, maps, models, and/or other illustrations

• Graphics will be used in at least 40% of the questions. Some graphics will contain information that is necessary for answering the question, while other graphics may only illustrate or support the context of the question

What Else Can We Do WE?

Page 28: Integrated II Workshop August 28, 2008. Purpose of Integrated II To assist our weaker science students master the high school science benchmarks To help

We Can!!!!We Can!!!!

• Cover the content in the provided sequence

• Conduct the suggested labs in the sequence or related labs of your choosing

• Practice reading strategies (data indicates that students usually score 20 points lower in science compared to their reading FCAT score)

Page 29: Integrated II Workshop August 28, 2008. Purpose of Integrated II To assist our weaker science students master the high school science benchmarks To help

We Can !!!!!We Can !!!!!

• Schedule weekly performance tasks

• Tell your students if they don’t pass the FCAT Science test they will have to take another science class next year

• If you do the exact same thing you did last year you will get the exact same results!!!!

• Do not worksheet your students

• You have to do science!

Page 30: Integrated II Workshop August 28, 2008. Purpose of Integrated II To assist our weaker science students master the high school science benchmarks To help

We can!!!We can!!!

• Work together and share ideas utilize moodle.

• Utilize FCAT Star to review your student’s data.

• Be positive!!! And make the best of the situation!!!

• Work smarter not harder!
